Ascolta. Piove
Dalle nuvole sparse.
Piove su le tamerici
Salmastre ed arse,
piove su i pini
scagliosi ed irti,
piove su i mirti
divini,
su le ginestre fulgenti
di fiori accolti,
su i ginepri folti
di coccole aulenti,………
The plants in the poem.
Many poets have dedicated their poems to the plants. Today I propose the poetry of Gabriele D'Annunzio "The rain in the pine" to illustrate the images that follow.
The pine alluded to is probably that of D'Annunzio Pescara, next to his house, where these plants were common, maybe there was a child, unfortunately, since the 50s, these species have disappeared, as well as almost all of the pine forest, to make way for houses and buildings.
Listen. It's raining
From the scattered clouds.
It rains on the tamarisk
Brackish and burned,
rain on the pines
scaly and spiky,
rain falls on the myrtles
divine,
on the broom shining
Flowers welcomed,
on the junipers thick
Fragrant pampering, .........
A whirlwind Sierra fall color weekend ended up with a surprise visit to the White Mountains to shoot the ancient Bristlecone Pines. I always wanted to spend some time up here, so it was an exciting and very pleasant side trip. I definitely want to come back and spend a few days up here.
If you have not been up here, you need to put it high on your short list of places to shoot ;-)
Several groups went just down the hill a ways to shoot a few iconic trees. Rob let on to this tree away from the crowds. We waited just a bit and were gifted with some pretty sweet light.
...looks great on black.

This is part of the truly awesome Methuselah Grove in California's White Mountains. The Bristlecone Pine trees of the Great Basin area are the longest continually living creature on the planet. The oldest has been approximately dated at 4900 years old! These are mostly far over the three thousand year old range. A mind blowing place to visit.
