Modified this recipe a little bit to fit what was on hand.
March 14th is AMERICAN PI DAY, because when written in the American date format of month.date, it gives the value of π (PI) to two decimal places: 3.14.
PI is an irrational number, one that cannot be written neatly as a simple fraction (e.g. 9.5 = 19/2), and so the decimal part of PI goes on to an infinity of places. PI to 29 places is: 3.141592653589793238462…
There is also a British PI day each year as well on the 22nd of July, which is written as 22/7 in British date format. This gives an approximation of 3.14285714…, which like the American PI Day value, is close but never exact.
