HRH Prince Harry visits Brockholes Nature Reserve, Preston, Lancashire. Picture by Paul Heyes, Monday October 23, 2017.
I took a visit with my sister to Talgarth Asylum the other day. I've been desperate to go there since seeing a number of wonderful photos of it from contacts. We stayed for about an hour or so to take shots before our imaginations got the better of us and we scarpered.
The history bit:
The Mid Wales (or Talgarth) Hospital (formerly known as the Brecon and Radnor Joint Asylum) was built in 1900 on over 200 acres of land and was officially opened on the 22nd February 1903. The site comprised the hospital, which catered 352 patients, a farm, bakery, tailor, market garden and a church. The hospital was closed in 2000, but up to that point it offered treatments for mentally unstable persons, rehabilitation and continuing care, psychological support and many more including reflexology and chiropody. Some of these services have now been transferred to Bronllys Hospital. The site of Talgarth Asylum is now privately owned, however, it has been derelict for a number of years. It offers some wonderful photo opportunities...if you're brave enough :o)

I'm planning a trip back there soon, but think going with a group is better than just two people (we freaked each other out a little too much).
Pond-Life - Northwood Lake Update 3rd May
It was a beautiful sunny morning here in Dublin, but with a cold breeze. The first thing I saw at the Lake this morning was two Mallard drakes walking in circles around a hen. Then of course I realised that one was chasing the other but it was not clear which was chasing and which was running away. Then one was grabbed by the wing it became clear which was the aggressor. A chase across the lake, followed closely by the hen brought them out of sight.
Having walked around the lake a squawk in the sky overhead alerted me to a huge Grey Heron being chased be what looked like a Jackdaw. The Heron came to perch on a tree on the island but too far away to get a decent shot. After a few minutes waiting for him to take off again I went to the Eastern side of the lake, still watching for developments. I went to the eastern side of the lake for several reasons, mainly because the only other time I had seen a Heron at the lake he had taken off in that direction over the main road and the rooftops of Santry Close. The sun would also be on my left hand side and would help any shot I managed to get.
I stood there for about fifteen minutes watching him in that tree and as I stood I got colder and colder my fingers in particular and the spray from the fountain didn't help. Just as I decided that I would move on he took off, turned and headed along the side of the island where the Swan nest is.
I set off at a pace to see if I could find where he landed. On arriving I could see the Swans on the nest, but no Heron. Then a couple of minutes later I could hear twigs break and I could see him with an ungainly walk heading through the undergrowth on the island, still too far away for a decent shot.
I now have two objectives at the Lake, the Cygnets and the Heron.
As the heron disappeared, Bertie the Mute Swan cob came on to the water a little less aggressive than the last few days and began to forage in the reeds right beside me. He then spent a few minutes bottom feeding before heading back to the nest and I decided I had better do likewise.

"Avery Island’s most spectacular feature was developed by the late Edward Avery McIlhenny, known as "Monsieur Ned" by his French speaking friends and associates. Much of the world knows about TABASCO® Pepper Sauce, made for over 125 years on Avery Island, Louisiana. Not as many people know that Avery Island is actually a salt dome that extends some eight miles beneath the earth's surface. Or that the protruding "island" part of the formation is home to the world's most beautiful sanctuaries for the preservation and study of flora and fauna.
It was on Avery Island, where salt and pepper meet, that Edward McIlhenny helped save the snowy egret from extinction. In 1895 when the bird was being hunted for its plummage, McIlhenny built an aviary on Avery Island and captured and raised eight wild egrets. After they had raised their hatches and were ready to migrate, McIlhenny freed them. The egrets returned the next spring and every spring since. The egrets and herons return by the thousands to the rookery now called "Bird City". Not surprisingly, Jungle Gardens is a birder's paradise, home to hundreds of species of resident and migratory birds.
McIlhenny did much more to ensure that feature generations had an ideal spot to enjoy and study the beauties of nature and to observe plants and flowers from around the world in his 200 acre Jungle Gardens. The gardens are home to a large collection of camellias. Thousands of plants represent some 600 varieties, including imports from Japan and France, as well as varieties that McIlhenny developed on Avery Island. You will see acres upon acres of bright azalea flowers that carpet the landscape in the spring. Massive live oak trees are prevalent throughout the gardens, along with brilliant wildflowers and groves of evergreens. The Chinese Garden contains a Buddha sculpture dating back to 1000 A.D."

Les chants du Mayflower
Joel Frederiksen - Ensemble Phoenix Munich - Ensemble traditionnel amérindien

No he tenido mucho tiempo para fotear.
First photo after long days without uploading. Not much time for shooting.
This is the first photo (not good at all) from a session in an abandoned discotheque on Iquique. Me and some friends got there after a soccer game on last Monday’s night. On the first visit, I hadn’t brought my camera with me. We just explored and it was a really creepy place to be.
We decided to come back there on Wednesday and I obviously took my camera this time. It was fun. Anyway, it’s quite difficult to try to shoot without being disturbed by your friends when they aren’t interested on photography at all. It was a nice day, by the way. Hope you like this collection, guys.

I was hoping to shoot birds in the first morning sun.. well.. that was not to be. This little fella had to be shot in almost dark.. so I increased the exposure by over 2 to get it to lighten up a bit. Also, my ISO was set to 100 and in manual mode I used 1/200 for my shutter speed. It is a miracle I got this picture at all! =)
Software used: Lightroom 3 for basic exposure setting and RAW conversion to TIFF and in CS5 I used OnOne Phototools to get the bird bright and sharp without also making the background more sharp.
About the curious neck adornments, read about this bird on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna's_Hummingbird it is Anna's hummingbird and they have a ruby colored throat and some ruby also on the head on the side. Some people call them the "ruby throat-ed hummingbird" but Anna's is special because of the forked tail and that the tail is dark and has white edges. this hummingbird species is native to the West Coast of the US and particularly many are found in Southern California and specifically in my backyard. =) I grow many flowers and trees specifically for them--I don't feed them with the sugar feeder because it actually hurts them! So they get to pick among a variety of flowers and flowering trees in my yard.
This little fella (a juvenile male) is sitting on my still dormant apricot tree checking me out. I had babies all over the place this spring but I also have a cat who investigates everything I investigate... so I did not visit the hummingbird nests, hoping not to call attention to them. =)
Happy Monday everyone!

www.compartetusideas.mx/php/Noticia.php?ID=342
Por: Ana Luisa Chaquiroff Estrada
Fuente: Dirección de Información de Gobierno del Estado de Chihuahua
Tipo: Gobierno Del Estado
Fecha: MARTES 27 ENERO 2015

I'm sorry I know this is bad, it would have looked so much cooler with an antique black umbrella, but the only ones we had were striped, yellow and bright red flowers! Also, sorry I haven't posted in a while, I had one I was going to post a couple weeks ago but my mom forbid it, it was just from my shoulders up and I had been wearing a cami but I pulled the straps down so you could see my bear shoulders. oooh so bad! No not really, it was kind of like an Eve thing like in Adam and Eve, I liked it.
+1 in comments, you should check it out it's a lot different and less creepy than this one
I'm still mostly lurking these days - life is busy. Sorry I haven't been by your streams much lately. I have just over a week left of work - that is so hard to believe...
I was tagged by my friend xAIAKx.
1. What I like to photograph the most:
Apparently lately I like to photograph trees, flares and cemeteries. But I'm surprised to find I don't actually know how to answer this question. I guess I like to photograph life in progress...
2. What I like to photograph the least:
strangers - although I do kind of wish I wasn't so shy and could do this
3. Photography Pet Peeves:
I'm going to have to copy xAIAKx and say noise. Except when it's part of the effect. I'm not sure what else - I'm starting to like all sorts of styles and see different things I like in most shots I see.
4. What I admire from other photographers:
Their unique ways of showing their world through their lens. (I know - such a corny answer, but that really is what I'm liking lately.)
5. What I'd like to learn better:
Most everything. Lately I'm trying to make my photos look clean and crisp - if that makes sense. That's what I'd currently like to learn more about.
Okay - so now it's my turn to tag (this is the part I don't like as much - don't feel pressured to do this if you don't feel like it...)

From www.encyclopediadubuque.org/index.php/XAVIER_HOSPITAL
XAVIER HOSPITAL. Former health-care provider on Windsor Avenue. Opened in 1949, Xavier had 132 beds and was operated by the FRANCISCIAN SISTERS OF THE HOLY FAMILY. The facility had Dubuque's first intensive-care unit and first recovery room and cared for Dubuque's POLIO victims in the months prior to the announcement of a vaccine. In 1974 the hospital was honored for its twenty-five year membership in the Catholic Hospital Association. (1)
Xavier's census often exceeded 100%. Patients were "doubled-up" in rooms. Beds were occasionally placed in corridors as the hospital cared for polio victims in 1953-54.
In 1957 the hospital installed a radio receiving station which operated on a closed circuit frequency and had the call letters: W-E-L-L. The station provided day-long programming of the hospital's choice with an option of six commercial stations for patients use. W-E-L-L's own program included relaxing music, regular prayers, Holy Mass, and announcements. Xavier was thought to be the second hospital in Iowa to install such a station with the other in Sioux City.(2)
The use of the hospital began to decline in 1965. This was clearly evident in 1979 when admissions dropped from 2,142 to 1,701 in the first six months. There were no layoffs, but hours were cut, and some vacant positions were not filled. In November 1981, the obstetrics department was the first to be closed. (3)
In 1970 the Dubuque County Medical Society purchased for $8,142.72 a multi-media instructional system of films, filmstrips and audiotapes for the continuing education of physicians and nurses working in coronary care units. Benefiting from the purchase were Finley Hospital, MERCY MEDICAL CENTER, and Xavier Hospital which would share the materials. Each hospital purchased its own projection equipment. (4)
In 1980 Dubuque was described by the Iowa Health Systems Agency as having thirty-two more hospital beds than necessary. The same year the SISTERS OF MERCY and the Sisters of St. Francis announced the merger of Xavier and Mercy Hospital. Xavier was to continue in operation with a combined management and no layoffs. (5) Occupancy at Xavier, however, continued to decline. In November 1981, the last baby was delivered at the hospital.
Xavier2.jpg
Sister Helen HUEWE was the CEO of Xavier in 1982 when it was closed one year after being purchased by MERCY MEDICAL CENTER. The nearly empty building cost Mercy $300,000 annually to maintain. (6) In 1983 the Iowa Health Facilities Council turned down a request by Mercy to convert the former hospital into apartments with limited nursing care for the elderly. In 1986 Mercy entered into an partnership with Arizona developer Alan Israel to renovate the building. Plans were made to convert the former hospital, at a cost of $8.5 million, into a retirement center complete with 163 apartments that would sell for between $30,000-$80,000, residential care floor, mini-mall, and performing arts center. By 1987 these plans had been dropped. (7)
The former hospital was saved from demolition in 1989. Windsor Park Retirement Center, the renovated hospital, was opened by Kennedy Construction Company which with the assistance of a City Council approved tax abatement arrangement. The grand opening was held on January 21 and 22, 1989. (8) The first administrator of the Center was Paul G. Gabrielson, the former administrator of BETHANY HOME for fifteen years.
Le troisième arc-en-ciel dans la même soirée! - The third rainbow in the same evening! On July 1, on at least three occasions there was sunshine while it rained. I saw three rainbows, the first around 6:15pm, the second around 7:05pm and the third around 8:35pm, each time lasting several minutes. The next evening, at around 7:30pm on July 2, there was again a rainbow for about 15 minutes! This time, I went outside to get better views.

Today was one of the hottest days this summer, the homeless in Ueno park were served cool orange iced drinks. This was part of my day hoping Second Day Harvest. I was in charge of Servering the Pasta and Bowls as well. I was so busy that I didnt take too many shots. i was very suprised to see so many homless from so many age groups. This shot was taken only after the Pasta ran out.

We are through to the Grand Final! Overcame a wobbly start, there was only 10 points difference between us and the opponents after the first 6 games. We took out the next 3 games comfortably to win the night. I had the personal satisfaction of thrashing the opposing captain in my mix doubles game. Now we got to wait to see who we play against on the big night, and there's a pretty good chance it will be the same team as last night as they have a second chance.
Pretty crazy weather in Melbourne yesterday and today. Extremely strong winds (recorded at 42 - 150 kph at different places). This morning it was pouring with rain and in the afternoon the sun came out. Typical Melbourne.
I was working on a document from home and in between one of the rain showers I ran outside and took some wet photos. This is the result after probably 150 shots with the reverse lens macro trick.
I originally wanted just a simple water droplet coming off a leaf but I found it really hard to focus and the wind was moving the branches around too much. Looking around I saw these two dead leaves and saw something else about it. I thought it looked a bit like a dragon head going in for the kill.
Back to working ...
P.S. Yes I did replace this photo twice ... when I got sick of working. In Struggleville today.
