My first attempt at remote triggering my D300. I installed Nikon Camera Control Pro on a laptop. Connected the D300 to the laptop and set it up in the yard with a clear shot of the feeder. Set the focus and locked it in. I then VNC'd into the laptop from a computer inside the house over the Wi-Fi network and kept an eye on the feeders. When birds came in i triggered the shot. Camera Control allows full control of the camera so I could set fstops, shutter speed and ISO no problem. Most of the shots came out with too shallow of a depth of field and parts of the birds were out of focus (this one included). Next time I'm going to have to get out when there is more light.

D300 through a Nikkor 300mm f/ 1:4 ED lens, 1/640 sec, f/4.0. ISO 800. Tripod Mounted and remote controlled through Nikon Camera Control. Some RAW processing in Lightroom and then Curves, Levels, Noise Reduction and Sharpening in Photoshop CS3.

I'll be trying it with a shorter lens and the tripod closer but I don't want the birds using the camera as a sitting and releasing station. This was also late afternoon and the sun was behind the birds. Early morning / Midday sun should bring the light on this side of them. I'm pretty sure a flash would just scare them away but I'll give it a shot.

Abandonment and restoration

After the fall of the Khmer empire in the 15th century, the temple of Ta Prohm was abandoned and neglected for centuries. When the effort to conserve and restore the temples of Angkor began in the early 20th century, the École française d'Extrême-Orient decided that Ta Prohm would be left largely as it had been found, as a "concession to the general taste for the picturesque." According to pioneering Angkor scholar Maurice Glaize, Ta Prohm was singled out because it was "one of the most imposing [temples] and the one which had best merged with the jungle, but not yet to the point of becoming a part of it". Nevertheless, much work has been done to stabilize the ruins, to permit access, and to maintain "this condition of apparent neglect."

Pond-Life - Northwood Lake Update 3rd May

It was a beautiful sunny morning here in Dublin, but with a cold breeze. The first thing I saw at the Lake this morning was two Mallard drakes walking in circles around a hen. Then of course I realised that one was chasing the other but it was not clear which was chasing and which was running away. Then one was grabbed by the wing it became clear which was the aggressor. A chase across the lake, followed closely by the hen brought them out of sight.

Having walked around the lake a squawk in the sky overhead alerted me to a huge Grey Heron being chased be what looked like a Jackdaw. The Heron came to perch on a tree on the island but too far away to get a decent shot. After a few minutes waiting for him to take off again I went to the Eastern side of the lake, still watching for developments. I went to the eastern side of the lake for several reasons, mainly because the only other time I had seen a Heron at the lake he had taken off in that direction over the main road and the rooftops of Santry Close. The sun would also be on my left hand side and would help any shot I managed to get.

I stood there for about fifteen minutes watching him in that tree and as I stood I got colder and colder my fingers in particular and the spray from the fountain didn't help. Just as I decided that I would move on he took off, turned and headed along the side of the island where the Swan nest is.

I set off at a pace to see if I could find where he landed. On arriving I could see the Swans on the nest, but no Heron. Then a couple of minutes later I could hear twigs break and I could see him with an ungainly walk heading through the undergrowth on the island, still too far away for a decent shot.

I now have two objectives at the Lake, the Cygnets and the Heron.

As the heron disappeared, Bertie the Mute Swan cob came on to the water a little less aggressive than the last few days and began to forage in the reeds right beside me. He then spent a few minutes bottom feeding before heading back to the nest and I decided I had better do likewise.

"Avery Island’s most spectacular feature was developed by the late Edward Avery McIlhenny, known as "Monsieur Ned" by his French speaking friends and associates. Much of the world knows about TABASCO® Pepper Sauce, made for over 125 years on Avery Island, Louisiana. Not as many people know that Avery Island is actually a salt dome that extends some eight miles beneath the earth's surface. Or that the protruding "island" part of the formation is home to the world's most beautiful sanctuaries for the preservation and study of flora and fauna.

It was on Avery Island, where salt and pepper meet, that Edward McIlhenny helped save the snowy egret from extinction. In 1895 when the bird was being hunted for its plummage, McIlhenny built an aviary on Avery Island and captured and raised eight wild egrets. After they had raised their hatches and were ready to migrate, McIlhenny freed them. The egrets returned the next spring and every spring since. The egrets and herons return by the thousands to the rookery now called "Bird City". Not surprisingly, Jungle Gardens is a birder's paradise, home to hundreds of species of resident and migratory birds.

McIlhenny did much more to ensure that feature generations had an ideal spot to enjoy and study the beauties of nature and to observe plants and flowers from around the world in his 200 acre Jungle Gardens. The gardens are home to a large collection of camellias. Thousands of plants represent some 600 varieties, including imports from Japan and France, as well as varieties that McIlhenny developed on Avery Island. You will see acres upon acres of bright azalea flowers that carpet the landscape in the spring. Massive live oak trees are prevalent throughout the gardens, along with brilliant wildflowers and groves of evergreens. The Chinese Garden contains a Buddha sculpture dating back to 1000 A.D."

Addiction 5. My Baby!

Miniman is my baby. She is the tiny baby kitten I adopted 5 months ago from the streets.

She was maybe 1 week old and I was supposed to keep her just for the night... Then for the weekend, and the rest you know!

People keep telling me she's either ugly or "different". She's got a tiny head and she has no defined colour, but I don't care, she's my baby and I love her very much.

I think she arrived in my life at the best time and made me very happy during hard times. I love her.

Her official name is Miniman (my mom's cat is called Michoman and she is a smaller version of him, so... yeah, I'm silly!), but we calll her Mina most of the time. Her necklace says MINI <3 and she's got about 10 more nicknames.

Can one be addicted to a cat? I am!

This was like the hardest picture to take! She kept moving and fighting her way away from my arms haha... I love her!! Have I said that too many times?!

Best picture of Mina. Taken by my sister!

Les chants du Mayflower

Joel Frederiksen - Ensemble Phoenix Munich - Ensemble traditionnel amérindien

....

In every 100 steps ? It is a kind of advance, a course, a ballade. It is, while leaving at home, 100 steps after 100 steps (that is to say in all 2400 step and thus 24 sights) photographs of what was in front of me.

So, every day, during 24 days, on Flickr, on the same place and at the same hour, the picture of previous the day is replaced by a new image.

To keep the track of the past images, they are placed in a message under the image which changes. It is thus necessary to reserve 24 successive places from the dépos of the first image.

This choice of presentation has the effect of showing the messages of the visitors and their comment on the image which was, for them, that of day.

...

Stop The Killings, Memorial for Cyclist Hits Home

By: Will on: Dec 11, 2006 04:38 PM (149 reads)

On Saturday afternoon more than 100 cyclists and friends of Eric Ng road from Washington Square Park to the Westside Greenway to pay honor to Eric and memorialize him. Eric Ng was killed while cycling on the westside bike path more than a week ago by a drunk driver who drove his BMW down the path for more than a mile before striking Eric. I did not know Eric, but I know some of his friends, and there are many other friends of his from the cycling community whose faces I know. Eric was both a cyclist and an activist. He was interested in making the world a better place and inspiring others to do the same. Saturday I took photos during the memorial. These will be painful for some, especially those who knew him or were there. I am sorry for that. I deliberated about posting them, Saturday was heart wrenching enough. But the killing of innocent cyclists in NYC must end!

Most painful of all Saturday was having to watch Ryan of Visual Resistance lead the dedication of Eric's ghost bike. Ryan is a leader of the Visual Resistance ghost bike project in which he makes ghost bikes, generally for people he does not know; but this past week he had to make one for a close friend and install it at the site of his friend's death. In posting these photos hopefully the injustice of this tragedy and of all killed cyclists will reach a bigger audience. I never want to have to attend another memorial like this again.

No he tenido mucho tiempo para fotear.

First photo after long days without uploading. Not much time for shooting.

This is the first photo (not good at all) from a session in an abandoned discotheque on Iquique. Me and some friends got there after a soccer game on last Monday’s night. On the first visit, I hadn’t brought my camera with me. We just explored and it was a really creepy place to be.

We decided to come back there on Wednesday and I obviously took my camera this time. It was fun. Anyway, it’s quite difficult to try to shoot without being disturbed by your friends when they aren’t interested on photography at all. It was a nice day, by the way. Hope you like this collection, guys.

Large And Black

So, I was at Montrose Beach yesterday, and as I always do, I walked from the dog beach to and through the preserve. And in the preserve was a professional photographer, pointing his camera towards some birds. And I took some pictures of some different birds, and then after awhile the pippins he was shooting. And then asked him about a bird, but not until they were all walking away. And he got on my case for talking, and then went off about me ruining it for people trying to make a living by donating my pictures to the Park District for signs and by taking pictures of the same birds he takes pictures of. And so I wished him a nice day and left, but not before saying, as I have to him before, that he cannot expect to take pictures in a Chicago park and have no one else ever be around. And that I will glady give pictures to worthy folk who ask. So then he sent me some rambling emails, which I deleted unread. After which I proceeded to post some pictures from the last few days. And thought I would do this SP. Taken at Loyola Park, one of my favorite parks. And holding my Park District volunteer hat, which I got from the Nature Center for doing turtle/tortoise presentations to the kids in the nature camp. (They want some pictures too.)

At Montrose where this guy got on my case, at the same time and right near us, there were paid contractors doing invasive plant control. Which is also done, although not with chemicals, by volunteers on a monthly basis. Yet the contractors have never told the volunteers they were ruining their livelihood by pulling weeds. I know at least one other bird photographer who mentioned getting a nasty email from this guy about the same topic. I know everyone needs to make a living, but I also know volunteer stuff is what makes the world work as well as it does.

Anyway, that is my mutter. I know at least one of my contacts lately talked about volunteering, as in hasn't lately and should get back into it, which made me want to write this.

I was hoping to shoot birds in the first morning sun.. well.. that was not to be. This little fella had to be shot in almost dark.. so I increased the exposure by over 2 to get it to lighten up a bit. Also, my ISO was set to 100 and in manual mode I used 1/200 for my shutter speed. It is a miracle I got this picture at all! =)

Software used: Lightroom 3 for basic exposure setting and RAW conversion to TIFF and in CS5 I used OnOne Phototools to get the bird bright and sharp without also making the background more sharp.

About the curious neck adornments, read about this bird on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna's_Hummingbird it is Anna's hummingbird and they have a ruby colored throat and some ruby also on the head on the side. Some people call them the "ruby throat-ed hummingbird" but Anna's is special because of the forked tail and that the tail is dark and has white edges. this hummingbird species is native to the West Coast of the US and particularly many are found in Southern California and specifically in my backyard. =) I grow many flowers and trees specifically for them--I don't feed them with the sugar feeder because it actually hurts them! So they get to pick among a variety of flowers and flowering trees in my yard.

This little fella (a juvenile male) is sitting on my still dormant apricot tree checking me out. I had babies all over the place this spring but I also have a cat who investigates everything I investigate... so I did not visit the hummingbird nests, hoping not to call attention to them. =)

Happy Monday everyone!

Location: The ranch is located northeast of Aspermont, Texas.

Acres: 7,435.87 (including 225 acres of free use State of Texas Land that is located inside the property boundary). This State of Texas Land is not accessible to the public, and there is no public access to this land. Public hunting and recreation is not allowed.

Terrain: Topography of the property is diverse, ranging from rough, rugged cedar breaks and canyons to rolling mesquite flats and productive live creek bottoms. Croton Creek flows through the northern portion of the ranch offering live water throughout the year. Two other more seasonal creeks also run through the ranch, eventually draining to Croton Creek.

Water: The ranch is watered primarily by Croton Creek, several dirt tanks, a spring and seasonal live water in Smelter Canyon and Wedington Creek. Croton Creek runs through the ranch for approximately seven miles. Smelter Canyon Creek offers an additional 2.8 miles of live water and Wedington Creek runs through the property for about 2.9 miles. Totally, there are approximately thirteen miles of live water that runs through the Long Ranch, making this one of the most desirable live water ranches in the area.

Access: Access to the ranch is provided by several miles of maintained county roads. The ranch is well off the highway and the location is very accessible while retaining a remote, private feeling.

Hunting/Recreation: This is an excellent area for wildlife. Whitetail deer, quail and turkey are all very common on the ranch. Migratory birds and feral hogs are also common to the area.

Price: $650.00 per acre with a portion of the minerals and executive leasing rights included.

Remarks: This is a long-term family ownership ranch, and this is the first time on the market. The ranch is in overall good condition and priced to sell.

Another nice Detail of the Volkswagen Manufactory in Dresden.

Transparent Factory is the English name of an automobile production plant owned by German carmaker Volkswagen, designed by architect Gunter Henn, and opened in 2002. The original German name is Gläserne Manufaktur (factory made of glass, literally vitreous manufactory). Both the German and English names are a word play on the double meaning of transparent and glassy, referring to both optical transparency and transparency of the production process.
