Die Belgische Tankstelle Vogelsang steht seit 2006 unter Denkmalschutz, da sie „zu den letzten, stilrein erhaltenen Tankstellenbauten der Nachkriegszeit“ zählt. Sie wurde Ende der 1950er Jahre als Funktionsbau des Truppenübungsplatzes „Camp Vogelsang“ von der belgischen Standortkommandantur errichtet. Die Gestaltung der Tankstelle zeigt den Baugeschmack der 1950er Jahre und weist typische Merkmale auf, die sich auch an zivilen Tankstellenbauten der Zeit finden, etwa ihr ovaler Grundriss und die beiden halbrunden Pavillonbauten, die den zentralen und über T-förmige Träger flach überdachten Bereich der Zapfsäulen einfassen.
„Die beiden Tanksäulen wurden bei der Restaurierung an Stelle der nicht mehr vorhandenen Original-Zapfanlagen neu aufgestellt.“
The Belgian gas station Vogelsang has been a listed building since 2006 because it is one of the last, stylishly preserved gas station buildings of the post-war period. It was built at the end of the 1950s as a functional building for the "Camp Vogelsang" military training area by the Belgian headquarters. The design of the petrol station reflects the architectural taste of the 1950s and shows typical features that can also be found in civil petrol station buildings of the time, such as its oval floor plan and the two semicircular pavilions that cover the central area of the petrol pumps, which are flatly roofed over T-shaped girders mounting.
"During the restoration, the two fuel pumps were set up in place of the original dispensing systems that no longer existed."

30 years ago I should have taken more photos of village train stations, telephone boxes and old industrial plants. Today they are gone.
Tankstelle in Winsen/Luhe
Die alte Tankstelle, die unter der belgischen Standortkommandantur (1950) betrieben wurde, ist hinter den Birken teilweise zu sehen.

De laatste dagen van de 'Budel-trein' zijn geteld. Railtraxx, die deze trafiek samen met de gelijkaardige zinkertstrein vanuit Balen op 1 september 2021 overnam van Lineas, is een jaar na de overname het slachtoffer. Door te hoge energiekosten sluit de zinkfabriek in Budel voor onbepaalde tijd. De zinkfabriek in Balen blijft wel open maar produceert maar de helft van zijn normale capaciteit. Gevolg: geen goederentreinen meer op de Ijzeren Rijn en ook slecht nieuws voor de havensectie Groenland te Antwerpen.

Door deze nabije sluiting besloot ik richting Hamont (Achel) te trekken om daar nog een mooie foto van deze prachtige zinkertstrein te nemen.
Jammer genoeg werden de weersomstandigheden slechter en slechter hoe dichter we Budel naderden.
Met donder en regen passeerde de zinkertstrein ons een eerste keer op de Belgisch-Nederlandse grens. Daarna namen we de trein terug en besloten we richting Antwerpen te gaan. Het was immers nog maar 14:00.

In Antwerpen aangekomen zagen we in het station Berchem de zinkertstrein opnieuw, hij reed het station door, waarop een vriendelijke zwaai van de bestuurder volgde.
Het plan was toen als volgt. Met de trein naar Antwerpen-Luchtbal en daar met de fiets naar de havensectie Groenland.

Bij aankomst in bundel Groenland werd de trein vanuit Balen al terug uitgehaald uit de fabriek, deze was inmiddels beladen met zinkerts, en zou later die avond terug vertrekken richting Balen. De locomotief 6481 die de trein vanuit Budel reed had inmiddels ook al van kant gewisseld en was klaar voor zijn lege zinkwagens in de fabriek te vullen. Wegens een te slechte zonnestand werd er niet langer in Groenland gebleven. Toen we op de Oosterweelsteenweg arriveerden zagen we op het bord dat de Wilmarsdonkbrug gesloten was, maar de brug stond niet omhoog? ... Het kon dus niet anders dan een goederentrein zijn. Er werd even gewacht en ja hoor, de lichten van de overweg op de Oosterweelsteenweg begonnen licht te geven en de HLR7815 kwam met een lege dieselolietrein vanuit Antwerpen bundel B-3 naar Antwerpen D.S Petrol. Er werden snel beslissingen genomen. We besloten ons op te stellen aan de Noordkasteelbrug, hier stond de zon op dat moment namelijk perfect! Na eerst twee schepen door te laten ging de overwegbel van de brug opnieuw en de HLD7815 van Lineas kwam brullend de brug over. En of dat de dag geslaagd was!

'Bonhams' auction Classic and Collectable Cars. This was one of their auctions at Beaulieu yesterday. During the public viewing, this man looked interested in bidding. There were 100's of interesting Vintage, Classic and Collectable cars up for auction, it would have taken the whole day to look at all the cars in any detail.
The working part of Hillary's Marina. Used by commercial and recreational boats to refuel and resupply. The calm water and overcast conditions just made a very peaceful scene. The subdued colours in this light really add to the calming nature of this scene.

If you stand still for long enough while looking down the straight, the cars themselves tend to fade into the background as the roar of the engines fills the air around you.
I suspect it’s something to do with the excitement of the race. Failing that it’s the amount of Castrol R you inhaled as you walked around the paddock before the race began.
Petrol head indeed.
