Cercospora zeae-maydis is the fungus that causes the disease. Early symptoms are yellow to tan lesions with a faint watery halo. As the lesion progresses it turns brown and rectangular in shape that exist between the distances of the veins. When fully developed the lesion can be 3 to 4 inches long and a 1/6 to 1/8 inch wide. The fungus can overwinter on corn debris left on the soil surface. Spores develop when it starts getting warm and the humidity started to rise in late spring. The spores can be transmitted by both wind and rain. In some cases gray leaf spot can limit yield up to 5 to 40 bushels of corn per acre.
Management of Gray Leaf Spot
1.Select corn hybrid with at least moderate resistance to gray leaf spot.
2.Crop rotation and tillage is an effective method to control the fungus.
3.Fungicides may be needed to prevent significant loss when plants are infected early and environmental conditions favor disease. Since economic return on foliar fungicide investment is still poorly understood, growers who apply fungicide are urged to leave non-sprayed strips in their fields for comparison of yield and disease severity.

The kitbag has now been brush vacuumed to rid of insect casings. I have packed out the kitbag by making a small mattress of Dacron, Tyvek and tissue to support but not packed out too tightly so the sharp creases can relax and not be forced out..
Kitbag formerly belonging to Lieut. ‘Jack’ PETRIE 8814 2NZEF
This task is really satisfying for me as a collection manager.
Using an appropriate brush and a small conservation vacuum cleaner all the detritus such as pest casings and frass is removed along with years of dust.
This is just starting the task.

Japanese beetles are approximately ¼ inch in length, metallic green with reddish brown elytra, and five white patches on each side of the abdomen (viewed here from below). The juvenile stage of Japanese beetles is the White Grub, a C-shaped larva commonly found in lawns. Adults and larvae are plant feeders, specializing on foliage and roots, respectively. On our journey from Kent to Surrey.
September 2012, M25, Kent.
When I say I'm going to take my camera for a walk every day, I mean it. Every day I go for a walk and it's now going with me. Because it's small it fits in my pocket.
22nd September 2012. Saturday, At a petrol station.
The kids want to keep him forever in our garden. Excuse me? He leveled my squash, cucumbers, canteloupe, and basil in just a few days (he may have had friends that escaped) and they want to keep him? I don't care if Inchy is cute, he is not staying.

"Both adults and larvae are predacious and feed on other insects. The adults eat caterpillars, aphids, and other soft-bodied insects and can be important predators. As they lie in wait for prey on flowers such as goldenrod they may feed on nectar and pollen but they do no damage to the plants. " - www.ipm.iastate.edu/ipm/iiin/soldier.html
Hypericum calycinum - a 12 inch tall, evergreen groundcover that thrives in variable conditions and produces 2-3 inch yellow flowers in mid-summer. Also known as Aaron's beard. A fine garden addition, if you don't mind it spreading. Good for covering a hillside. This plant is not native to the US, and has no serious insect or disease problems.
This very odd man strolled by and stopped to pose for my camera without me even asking. It is kind of hard to tell, but he has three muddy, live rats wriggling on strings in his hand. I believe that this is some form of pest control... the government pays individuals to deliver rats to them, but they have to be live to prove that they were captured.
Aggregation of nymph boxelder bugs.

Joe pye weed is excellent plant for attracting pollinators and is considered to be deer resistant. This tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) is common in the Northeast, but beware! The caterpillars might be feasting on garden plants like dill, parsley, cilantro and fennel. If you're concerned about the loss of your herbs, just plant more to accommodate the butterflies!
Bald-faced hornets are commonly found in woody areas. They can be found in the gardens and the vegetation of the urban areas. You will find the nests of these wasps on buildings too. If you tinker with the nests of Bald-faced Hornets, they will become extremely aggressive.
Their bite is no worse than the other types of wasps. Moreover, they squirt venom into the eyes of the intruders as a defense. This can cause temporary blindness and extreme watering of the eyes. This unique defense of Bald-faced hornets is harmful to the human being.
Mega Pest Control is at your service whenever you want. We assure you that we will help you get rid of Bald-faced Hornets.
