I would have loved to have taken a peek inside this mill, since I imagine there is still some wonderful machinery in there.
It is pretty secure with lots of boarding and steel shutters, padlocks etc.
Fisons owned the chemical plant near to this mill in the late seventies when the government introduced new laws about chemical plants, which included regulating how close residential and other property could be.
Because of this legislation, Fisons were obliged to buy out the neighboring properties with residential housing.
Its a lovely building, so I hope it will come back into use now the site next door has been 'decontaminated'.
If anyone knows any more please leave a comment.
U.S. Department of Agriculture, USDA, Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins joins a trail ride with USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, APHIS, tick riders near La Joya, Texas, on Feb. 9, 2026. The ride showcased USDA’s efforts to prevent cattle fever ticks along the U.S.-Mexico border, a critical measure for safeguarding livestock health and supporting Texas ranchers.
This afternoon Secretary Rollins cut the ribbon of an $8.5 million sterile New World screwworm, NWS, fly dispersal facility in South Texas; part of a sweeping five-pronged plan to enhance USDA’s already robust ability to detect, control, and eliminate this pest. These urgent actions are necessary to finish the fight against NWS and protect the United States.
NWS is a devastating pest that causes serious and often deadly damage to livestock, wildlife, pets, and in rare cases, humans. While NWS has been eradicated from the United States for decades, recent detections in Mexico as far north as Oaxaca and Veracruz, about 700 miles away from the U.S. border, led to the immediate suspension of live cattle, horse, and bison imports through U.S. ports of entry along the southern border on May 11, 2025.
In the event NWS advances northward into the U.S., these tick riders will play a crucial role in spotting and combatting this pest.
Along with them were U.S. Border Patrol riders.
Cattle fever ticks (Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus and R. (B.) microplus) are the most dangerous cattle ectoparasites in the United States. These ticks have been a threat to American agriculture for generations because they spread the disease bovine babesiosis, commonly called cattle fever.

Root or crown rot normally occurs in older fields where there has been a history of stress, heavy traffic or grazing, poor drainage, fertility and pH problems, previous insect damage, etc. Plants exhibiting crown rot appear stunted and have few stems. Crown rot progresses slowly in the crown and taproot area of the plant. In many situations, crown rot cannot be attributed to a single pathogen. Several fungi (Fusarium spp., Phoma, Pythium, Rhizoctonia) as well as some bacteria, have been implicated in the disease. Often, a complex consisting of several of the pathogens attacks the plant. The way to tell if a plant has the disease is to dig up (not pull up) a plant showing symptoms. Then use a knife to split open the crowns and roots. Healthy tissue should be white, moist, and firm. Rotted tissue usually has a black or brownish- red color, but the color may vary from yellowish to pinkish or gray-Ken Wise

Several species of yellowjackets are pests of humans, including the German and Eastern yellowjackets, which form large colonies of thousands of workers by late summer. Nests tend to be in places of human activity (buildings, fence posts, vehicles, other structures that offer shelter).

Rats and rodents are considered to be one of the filthiest animals found in the planet. Rats are known to carry unwanted viruses and diseases which can be a health hazard for humans, both children and adults. Rats and rodents are very unsanitary, and they can contaminate your home rapidly if they are not extracted on time. These pests typically attack the attic and can multiply in numbers fast. While living in your home, they will urinate and defecate just about at any place convenient for them. Rat's are attracted to insulation because they can burrow under them and hide.
Wild animals such as raccoons, skunks, or even opossums were once not often present or seen in city or urban areas. With less and less land for wild animals to reside in, it is no longer uncommon to find them breaking into attics and crawlspaces of a home. Wild animals trespassing into homes are usually there as a place for security to give birth or provide a safe place for their offspring. It's highly advised that when you are hearing unusual noises in your attic or have witnessed wild animals at your property to have them removed immediately. Wild animals can be aggressive and dangerous to the residence of the home, especially if they are protecting their young.
