Cockroaches brownish black or tan, shiny flat bodied foul smelling insects are well known and are found all over world . More than 3000 species of cockroaches are known to occur throught out the world. They are very active at night or in dark places. Their filthy habits, repulsive appearance, odour and possibility that they spread diseases like Tuberculosis, Cholera, Leprosy, Dysentery and Typhoid make them very dangerous. They destroy food, damage fabrics and book-bindings and contaminate the materials over which they crawl by their excreta.

The cockroaches do not lay their eggs singly. They are laid in groups, each group being covered by a hard covering matrix.

Cockroaches frequently enter into the houses through small inlets crevices, hole and openings of floors, walls doorframes, spaces behind wooden furniture. It is desirable that wooden utensils or furniture’s are avoided in the houses. Modern practice is to use marble-made utensils like shelves, cupboards etc. Special attention be given to water and drainage pipe. Several observations have shown the city-drainage-systems are most important breeding sites for American Cockroaches.

Yellowjackets nesting outside and above a window were removed using a household vacuum. After 50+ yellowjackets were removed, the vacuum canister was sealed in a plastic bag and placed in a freezer for two days. The European hornet (Vespa crabro) is the only true hornet in the northeastern US. It is an introduced species, most commonly seen in forested areas and farmland. The paper nest resembles that of a large yellowjacket nest, but it is usually tan, not gray. European hornets are social, predatory and beneficial, but they will occasionally bang into glass windows at night attracted by lights inside. They resemble cicada killer wasps, which have very different habits.

The Toadflax Brocade Moth (Calophasia lunula) is native to Europe but was intentionally introduced to North America in the 1960s in attempt to control yellow toadflax (Linaria vulgaris) and dalmatian toadflax (Linaria genistifolia ssp. dalmatica) in places where these exotic plants are considered noxious weeds.

I saw this caterpillar on a wooden post and watched for over an hour as it built a cocoon by chewing up pieces of wood and placing the chewed wood around itself until it was completely enclosed.

Note: "During the period of June 10 to July 1 , 1965, a total of 65,945 acres were sprayed with DDT for control of early-instar larvae (Perkins and Dolph 1967). Application was by helicopter and at the rate of 0. 75 pound DDT in 1 gallon of fuel oil formulation per acre. Because of public concern at this time about side effects of DDT in the environment, impact of the spray on other resources, including fish, water, soil, forage, and cattle, was evaluated by scientists working independently of the project (Crouch and Perkins 1968, Tarrant et al. 1972). In addition, a small test was made of two other candidate insecticides, Dursban, an organic phosphate, and Zectran, a carbamate."

To safely set a snap trap, place a pen or pencil below the paddle when engaging the kill bar. The pen will hold the paddle up and prevent the trap from tripping accidentally. After you have placed the trap in its desired location, gently remove the pen to set the trap.

The Brown Rat, (Rattus Norwegicus), will live anywhere. All they require is food, water and somewhere to burrow and call home. these were photographeed at Toddington Service Station, M1, northbound, Bedfordshire, England.

Grease marks on the pipe insulation here indicate that rodents are feeding on the water droplets. Snap traps affixed to the pipe should be used here.

Bald-faced hornets are important natural predators, but can pose a health risk when found near human activity. Early-season scouting and removal of small nests can prevent problems with large hornet populations later in the year. This is the best way to protect yourself and others around your home, school or office from painful and/or dangerous stings.

Common Wasp (Vespula vulgaris).

Wasp nest removed from a bird box, photographed a couple of days after it was treated by pest control as the wasps were causing a nuisance on school grounds.

The nest contained the queen wasp and many workers including all stages of development from eggs through larvae to adults about to emerge from their papery cells. Some of the larvae were still alive.

Here you can see the layered comb structure of the nest which is constructed of wood pulp and saliva which the wasps have made by chewing on wooden objects (they can't make wax in the way that bees do).
