Culex pipiens, the most common mosquito around the home and around the world, is the primary carrier of encephalitis viruses. It has a very small home range and usually does not fly more than 300 feet from a breeding site. Because this mosquito breeds in small pools of standing water containing leaves or other debris, backyards can be the perfect habitat
A yellowjacket queen started this nest inside my backyard beehive. I removed it and haven't seen the queen at all. We wonder what the bees thought of this!

The Toadflax Brocade Moth (Calophasia lunula) is native to Europe but was intentionally introduced to North America in the 1960s in attempt to control yellow toadflax (Linaria vulgaris) and dalmatian toadflax (Linaria genistifolia ssp. dalmatica) in places where these exotic plants are considered noxious weeds.
I saw this caterpillar on a wooden post and watched for over an hour as it built a cocoon by chewing up pieces of wood and placing the chewed wood around itself until it was completely enclosed.
Seasonal items tucked behind sheds will fill with water and provide mosquito habitat. Fight the bite, dump the water and store equipment in dry places! For more information about mosquito management, see: "What's all the buzz about mosquitoes?" at: hdl.handle.net/1813/43851
Baits used on rodent snap traps can sometimes provide food for other pests, such as ants or cockroaches. Consider using nesting material such as string as a bait: www.flickr.com/photos/99758165@N06/14745901126/in/set-721...

Fireplace surrounds are still quite ornate today, but are cheaper and suitable in modern designs and surroundings. Purchasing a surround that fits in with your fireplace needs is invariable accessible. Always remember that what you need in your surround is more important that what you find more attractive.

Pink snow mold (Fusarium nivale) and speckled snow mold (Typhula species) are the two main fungi that cause this disease. Pink snow mold is by far more common than speckled snow mold. Fusarium infects and survives on living plants as conidia or mycelium. Typhula over-winters as sclerotia in plant debris or soil. When the spores of speckled snow mold or pink snow mold germinate they infect the leaves of the plant. The older leaves that touch the soil surface under the snow canopy are first infected. The crowns may or may not become infected. Fungi under the canopy of snow will continue to develop eventually producing conidia or sclerotia. The disease is most aggressive at temperatures that are slightly above freezing. Many times snow mold occurs in patches in the field after the snow melts. You will observe a fungal mass on the leaves that appears pinkish, whitish or gray. Many times the leaves will have brown-black fungal bodies which are called sclerotia. The leaves could be partly or entirely killed. If snow mold infects the crown it will kill the plant. If the crown is not infected most likely new leaves will grow back and the plant should produce grain.by Ken Wise

Digger bees are pollinators active in early spring. Each female makes a burrow in sandy or bare soil, and will provide her egg with a pollen ball. These bees are generally harmless, but you can discourage them from nesting in an area by overseeding with grass.
Mass trappings are sometimes used to crash rodent populations. These can be particularly effective when combined with efforts to eliminate food sources through sanitation and harborage areas through exclusion. This NYC alley provided food in the form or garbage at the end of the alley, and shelter in the stone foundation. Yellowjackets are stinging insects that will defend their nest when threatened. Because of the location of this nest and the fact that one individual was already stung several times, yellowjackets were removed using a vacuum while wearing a bee suit. The nest was then harvested and placed in a sealed container. This treatment removed the threat of yellowjackets without the use of pesticides.

Cicada Killer Wasps are large insects (1.5 inches) that are present in summer months. Female wasps are solitary, each digging their own burrow in bare/open soil. Male wasps will guard a female nest and chase other wasps and humans that approach. Fortunately they cannot sting. Female wasps are beneficial by reducing cicada populations, which they provide to their larvae as food.
