Long-term army disposals retailer in the Perth CBD Wellington Army Surplus located on the corner of Wellington Street and Pier Street which held its closing down sale in mid 2017 after trading for 75 years. The business in the end took over several shops along Wellington Street with different sections such as Army surplus, camping, jeans and workwear in the different sections of the store.

The site was sold for Brisbane-based Blue Sky developers with the single level shops demolished to construct a 30 floor tower for student accommodation in the centre of Perth. The two level brick building facade on the corner of Wellington and Pier Streets dating from 1897 has been retained and will be incorporated into the new development. It is worth noting that all universities in the Perth metropolitan area are located in the suburbs and not near the CBD which will affect the success of the development.

Perth was a Royal City since 1212 until an ommission happened in a government act of 1974.

The Perth City Police Pipe Band and Perth Corporation Transport were two of the groupings that were left 'High n Dry' but the road signs entering this connurbation remained the same...Welcome to The City Of Perth..

A group Perth 800 was formed a few years ago and thankfully Perth City status was re-instated early this year 2012. I think my pictures played a very small part, thanks.

The "domestic" block at 63A has been targetted by the local neds, no doubt under some freedom of expression thing. Some attempt has been made to secure the place but it is open to further attack.

This is the Perth station timepiece, with two faces on the Up side (overlooking Platform 4) and three on the Down side (seen here, overlooking the back concourse and Platform 7). It was manufactured by the Edinburgh horologists James Ritchie and Son (now part of Smith of Derby).

Until April 2016, it had the honour of being the only hand-wound turret station clock in Scotland; and one of only two on Network Rail (the other being at Leicester station). Having lovingly attended to winding and adjusting the clock for several years, I was distraught when an engineer appeared one day to fit an 'autowinder'. The great weight was disconnected from the mechanism and replaced by electronic apparatus. Fortunately, the pendulum and mechanical motion were left alone.

Otherwise, the clock has certainly existed in its current form at least since the last major reconstruction of the station in 1911. Earlier photographs, and George Earl's 1895 painting Coming South, show a very similar clock face structure, but positioned differently. The clock may therefore date from the 1880s, when the station was massively remodelled.

My work colleague Daniel recently noticed that the city in the background of the Sanctuary DVD cover is in fact Perth!

Some poking around online found this much better image (without all the other actors blocking the view) which clearly shows that the photo used was taken from the Esplanade, then mirrored. Nice!

Sorry I haven't been commenting on anyone's photos. I had a trip to the Kimberley region of Western Australia in Aug/Sept. Since then I have been busy editing my photos so have had to ignore Flickr.

I'm not a city lover but I have to say Perth was very clean, lots of green spaces for people & I enjoyed my very short stay there.

Perth city view from Kings Park.

The city is not that big but beautiful. It is said that it rains quite often in winter in Perth, but it was sunny & warm during my stay in Perth. I was so luckeyyy!

Strip search Pastors strip to expose refugees as people

Eight Church leaders faced court in Perth this morning. The group pleaded guilty and were given a spent conviction with three month conditional release (they cannot be charged or convicted of an offence in that time). Following a court hearing in Perth this morning 5 Christian leaders have stripped to just their undergarments and placards reading “Refugees are People” and are currently walking from Perth Court to Foreign Minister Julie Bishop’s Subiaco office, calling for the release of the 135 children currently locked-up on Nauru and for an end to offshore detention.

“Attempts to humiliate and deter us have failed and we are more determined than ever to see the dignity of people in immigration detention recognised,” said Pastor Jarrod McKenna of WestCity Church of Christ.

“For those who seek to deter us we have a simple message: at the centre of our faith is a symbol of torture that God transformed into a symbol of love. There is nothing you can throw at us that we can’t see transformed for the freedom of others,” said Pastor McKenna.

This action comes after eight Christian leaders faced Perth court earlier this morning over a peaceful sit-in last month at the office of Foreign Minister Julie Bishop. The eight Christian leaders were arrested, strip searched and charged with trespass on 10 December 2014 after the peaceful sit-in which was part of the #LoveMakesAWay national day of action. Love Makes a Way is a national movement of Christians seeking an end to Australia's inhumane asylum seeker policies through prayer and nonviolent love in action.

“The Human Rights Law Centre described the strip-searches of peaceful protesters as ‘deeply concerning’,” said Pastor McKenna.

“Instead of strip searching Church leaders our nation needs to be searching its heart for a humane response to those seeking safety,” he said.

“Even if you strip-search us, even if you make us squat and cough, even if you threaten us, we will not stop fighting for freedom of all people in detention. We believe that love makes a way,” said Teresa Lee, co-founder of First Home Project who faced court earlier today after participating in the peaceful sit-in last month.

“Refugees are people, it is as simple as that. All people deserve to have a safe home and not one of the 1930 people currently locked up in detention deserve to have their future frozen indefinitely,” she said.

“Today we call on the Government to make a public commitment to release the 135 children currently imprisoned on Nauru. These children have been cruelly shipped off, locked-up, and left in limbo, deprived of their precious childhoods,” said Reverend Lorna Green, Anglican Rector of Serpentine-Jarrahdale who also faced court earlier today.

“We say to these children and all those people locked up on Manus Island and Nauru: we see you and we won’t give up on you,” said Pastor Alex McKellar from WA’s largest church, Riverview, also among the eight who faced court for the December action at the Foreign Minister's office.
