Taken again directly from a Cindy Sherman portrait, it shows the deep despair I had known and I was particularly pleased to have captured the tear on my chin. Not a flattering picture and quite hard for me to look at and share.

Comfortable in her solitude.

This is part of a set of self-portraits on personality disorders that I am currently working on. These portraits represent Schizoid Personality Disorder.

The DSM-IV-TR criteria for Schizoid PD are:

A. A pervasive pattern of detachment from social relationships and a restricted range of expression of emotions in interpersonal settings, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by four (or more) of the following:

1. neither desires nor enjoys close relationships, including being part of a family

2. almost always chooses solitary activities

3. has little, if any, interest in having sexual experiences with another person

4. takes pleasure in few, if any, activities

5. lacks close friends or confidants other than first-degree relatives

6. appears indifferent to the praise or criticism of others

7. shows emotional coldness, detachment, or flattened affectivity

Some theorists say that some Schizoid individuals actually feel that there is a possibility to form relationships with people and are bothered by their preference to be detached from people. These are the patients that actually seek out a therapist. I wanted to include a bit of that in some of these photos. In some of these photos I wanted to imply that someone else was in the room with my character, and she is feeling very awkward and unsure of how to interact. She is very inhibited and shows very restricted emotion, but there is a hint of curiosity.

Other photos assume that she is alone and content in her solitude.

Appearing aloof, cold, and detached. Not showing much interest in talking to you.

The cause is not clearly understood, but both genetic and environmental factors play a role. Typically many genes are involved. Environmental factors include long term stress and a history of childhood abuse.[1] It is divided into bipolar I disorder if there is at least one manic episode and bipolar II disorder if there are at least one hypomanic episode and one major depressive episode. In those with less severe symptoms of a prolonged duration the condition cyclothymic disorder may be present. If due to drugs or medical problems it is classified separately.[2] Other conditions that may present in a similar manner include: drug misuse, personality disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and schizophrenia as well as a number of medical conditions.

A strong woman? Me?! No way, not any more...maybe again, one day?...

An out-take from my mental health series, Out of My Mind - this one didn't make the final cut. It's a bit crap compared to some of the others, but I still sort of like it!

In this photo, my character appears startled and fearful in response to someone (the viewer of this photo, even) entering her personal space unexpectedly. She is uncomfortable with their presence and has no desire to interact with them.

She doesn't want to see anyone and doesn't want to be seen. "If I can't see you, you can't see me."

Today, Borderline does not control me.

An enigmatic pose – am I worried, nervous, afraid? Has something terrible happened or is it possibly just about to happen? This shot is a direct homage to one of Cindy Sherman’s photographs, hence the location, coat and position of my hands.

"Child molesters are human predators, and predators go after wounded prey. Like the bass that is particularly attracted to the crippled minnow or the shark attracted to blood, molesters are sensitive to the signs of vulnerability that results from previous victimization."

Just a silhouette...insignificant, unnoticed.

I am some strange creature you put in the spot light. I am a target... you have your own version of who I am.

Untitled #1

The first from a portfolio of work entitled 'Out of my Mind,' a series documenting my journey through mental illness. All the photographs in this series are original prints from 35mm negatives.

Untitled #1 was taken outside the psychiatric hospital where I received treatment. It sums up the whole project, that of revisiting, both physically and emotionally, the places along my journey.

Photographed on 35mm Black and White film and processed and printed by me on 10x8 gloss paper.

This is my ‘safe place’, always behind the camera. Doing these self-portraits has been an intense experience of therapeutic photography and has helped me examine my self and my illness, as well as providing therapy.

In solitude...but possibly troubled by that?

A little hard to discern the expression here...irritated by the intrusion into her personal space or slightly curious about interacting?
