The moment I saw this mallard I was reminded of the myth of Narcissus and of so many works of art that depict the young man who fell in love with his own reflection. The name Narcissus is, of course, the source of the word narcissist.
I have named this mallard Donald J. Trump.
'May he who loves not others, love himself.'
In Greek mythology, Narcissus was a hunter from Thespiae who was known for his beauty. Narcissus was proud, in that he disdained those who loved him, causing some to take their own life to prove their devotion to his striking beauty.
The goddess of revenge noticed this behaviour and decided to punish Narcissus. Once, during the summer, he was getting thirsty after hunting, and the goddess lured him to a pool where he leaned upon the water and saw himself in the bloom of youth. Narcissus did not realize it was merely his own reflection and fell deeply in love with it, as if it were somebody else. Unable to leave the allure of his image, he eventually realized that his love could not be reciprocated and he melted away from the fire of passion burning inside him, eventually turning into a gold and white flower.
Narcissus is the origin of the term narcissism, a fixation with oneself and one's physical appearance or public perception.

N: Narcissistic personality disorder
A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:

-Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
-Believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
-Requires excessive admiration
-Has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations
-Is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
-Lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others
-Is often envious of others or believes others are envious of him or her
-Shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes
Holy moly...for the longest time I thought there was NO way this was going to work....but after four hours of editing and playing around I totally made this work and I'm SUPER proud of this! Holy damn...haha
So obviously I don't blog much here anymore so I thought for ANYONE who was interested in things going on in my life/my thoughts/my opinions I'd let you guys know where to find my blog...the only down side is you have to get a livejournal account to read it...it's really just to keep my privacy because I post a LOT of personal issues there that I don't really want certain people to see lol but I talk a lot about some of these things on flickr so I figured I'd extend the invitation.

H: Histrionic Personality Disorder
People with this disorder are usually able to function at a high level and can be successful socially and professionally. People with histrionic personality disorder usually have good social skills, but they tend to use these skills to manipulate other people and become the center of attention. Furthermore, histrionic personality disorder may affect a person's social or romantic relationships or their ability to cope with losses or failures.
People with this disorder lack genuine empathy. They start relationships well but tend to falter when depth and durability are needed, alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation. They may seek treatment for depression when romantic relationships end, although this is by no means a feature exclusive to this disorder.
They often fail to see their own personal situation realistically, instead tending to dramatize and exaggerate their difficulties. They may go through frequent job changes, as they become easily bored and have trouble dealing with frustration. Because they tend to crave novelty and excitement, they may place themselves in risky situations. All of these factors may lead to greater risk of developing depression.
Additional symptoms include:
-Exhibitionist behavior.
-Constant seeking of reassurance or approval.
-Excessive dramatics with exaggerated displays of emotions, such as hugging someone they have just met or crying uncontrollably during a sad movie (Svrakie & Cloninger, 2005).
-Excessive sensitivity to criticism or disapproval.
-Inappropriately seductive appearance or behavior.
-Excessive concern with physical appearance.
-Somatic symptoms, and using these symptoms as a means of garnering attention.
-A need to be the center of attention.
-Low tolerance for frustration or delayed gratification.
-Rapidly shifting emotional states that may appear superficial or exaggerated to others.
-Tendency to believe that relationships are more intimate than they actually are.
-Making rash decisions.
Well I'm full of mixed emotions right now...
On one hand Valentines Day sucked big time...but I knew it would. But I only cried once today so far...so I'm doing better than I expected. I'm guessing all the chocolate consumption helped too...but yeah, it's been a really, really rough day. I'm just glad it's almost over...
On the other hand I really am proud of this picture and like how it came out...hopefully I can redeem myself after my HORRIBLE attempt at a picture yesterday. ugh...if I could take it down I totally would. It was a disgrace....
One more thing: I'm trying to figure out how to make some money so I can move to California and be with Garry. I dunno if anyone would be interested in a book of my pics or of editing techniques I use or if anyone would take part in some kind of photo auction of some sort...please let me know what you guys think. I'm desperate for money...I can't be here anymore I NEED to get to Garry...at this point I'd rather be homeless with him than here with all the riches in the world but without him.
One symptom of my illness was self-harm. Cutting is often a methodical, ritualised act and is a way of keeping control of emotions or situations, or to create pain where numbness only seems to exist. It reminds cutters that we can still feel.

B: Borderline Personality Disorder
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a personality disorder described as a prolonged disturbance of personality function in a person (generally over the age of eighteen years, although it is also found in adolescents), characterized by depth and variability of moods. The disorder typically involves unusual levels of instability in mood; black and white thinking, or splitting; the disorder often manifests itself in idealization and devaluation episodes, as well as chaotic and unstable interpersonal relationships, self-image, identity, and behavior; as well as a disturbance in the individual's sense of self. In extreme cases, this disturbance in the sense of self can lead to periods of dissociation.
Studies suggest that individuals with BPD tend to experience frequent, strong and long-lasting states of aversive tension, often triggered by perceived rejection, being alone or perceived failure. Individuals with BPD may show lability (changeability) between anger and anxiety or between depression and anxiety and temperamental sensitivity to emotive stimuli. The negative emotional states specific to BPD may be grouped into four categories: destructive or self-destructive feelings; extreme feelings in general; feelings of fragmentation or lack of identity; and feelings of victimization.
Individuals with BPD can be very sensitive to the way others treat them, reacting strongly to perceived criticism or hurtfulness. Their feelings about others often shift from positive to negative, generally after a disappointment or perceived threat of losing someone. Self-image can also change rapidly from extremely positive to extremely negative. Impulsive behaviors are common, including alcohol or drug abuse, unsafe sex, gambling and recklessness in general. Attachment studies suggest individuals with BPD, while being high in intimacy- or novelty-seeking, can be hyper-alert to signs of rejection or not being valued and tend toward insecure, avoidant or ambivalent, or fearfully preoccupied patterns in relationships. They tend to view the world generally as dangerous and malevolent, and tend to view themselves as powerless, vulnerable, unacceptable and unsure in self-identity.
Suicidal or self-harming behavior is one of the core diagnostic criteria in DSM IV-TR, and management of and recovery from this can be complex and challenging. The suicide rate is approximately 8 to 10 percent. Self-injury attempts are highly common among patients and may or may not be carried out with suicidal intent. BPD is often characterized by multiple low-lethality suicide attempts triggered by seemingly minor incidents, and less commonly by high-lethality attempts that are attributed to impulsiveness or comorbid major depression, with interpersonal stressors appearing to be particularly common triggers. Ongoing family interactions and associated vulnerabilities can lead to self-destructive behavior. Stressful life events related to sexual abuse have been found to be a particular trigger for suicide attempts by adolescents with a BPD diagnosis.
Well this is only kind of my idea..my idea was much cooler but I was struggling to make it work. I took a good 60 pics last night but they didn't turn out and I was too tired to reshoot so I'm now two days in the hole :-P but that's alright, I figure I deserve to have a less strict 365 because my pics aren't just 10 minutes of shooting, 10 minutes of editing, and walla...these puppies take hours lol
So a personal update: I went to see the counselor yesterday and after talking with her for an hour and a half I was suddenly filled with motivation...I feel so empowered. I actually declared a major today which is still kinda bizarre to me. I am now a psychology major. I'm also looking into school in Sacramento so I can be 30-60 minutes from Garry as opposed to 2,500 miles lol so we're SO filled with hope that this long distance is coming to an end. I also plan on telling my mom about my engagement (finally). I'm going to write her a letter then either read it on the phone or wait until spring break and read it to her then. It's going to drive me insane but I NEED to do it...her not knowing is holding me back and it's eating away at me slowly. No matter what her reaction may be, I will move on and learn to deal with it...this is my life now...mine. I'm 20 years old and while I may be naive, insecure, and young I'm NOT stupid and immature.
I feel so refreshed...like this is the beginning of something wonderful :)

A question about human character led me to investigate Wikipedia's definition of character. What a myriad of answers popped up, answers that included a list of names a mile long. Did I learn a little more about character? I learned one thing and that was that anyone who might be considered a couch potato will never really learn a lot about character other than, perhaps, the characters on that most famous television series, Dallas.
To find out about the kind of character I was investigating, I would have to continue reading the biographies and autobiographies of men and women who have made some positive contributions to the world. RLH

People don't seem to understand that when it comes to mental illnesses, sufferers can't just "get over it." For some reason, society seems to believe that an illness is less serious if it's psychological rather than physical. But hey guys, keep it up, because this type of attitude TOTALLY helps sufferers recover.

Wilhelm Reich (March 24, 1897 – November 3, 1957) was an Austrian-American psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, known as one of the most radical figures in the history of psychiatry. He was the author of several notable books, including The Mass Psychology of Fascism and Character Analysis, both published in 1933.

By a belated interest in Freud, I found information about a famous individual, Wilhelm Reich, in Wikipedia. Reich's theory about energy captured my interest. It is with a certain amount of shame that I confess I had never heard of Reich or his theory. Now, in the autumn of my life, I ask myself if I would have benefited intellectually had I known about "orgone energy" when I was in my youth. Would my life been enriched if I had known how to apply the orgone theory to my lifestyle, or was I applying this theory to my life but without a name to identify it in some manner. Some might say that "sowing one's wild oats" would be a simple way to identify such a theory. Nevertheless, it is with some regret that I am just now learning about Wilhelm Reich.

"People with OCPD tend to be high achievers and feel a sense of urgency about their actions. They may become very upset if other people interfere with their rigid routines. They may not be able to express their anger directly. Instead, people with OCPD experience feelings that they consider more appropriate, like anxiety or frustration. A person with this personality disorder has symptoms of perfectionism that usually begin in early adulthood." NIMH
I often used to walk around feeling like I was in some sort of bubble – unable to connect with the ‘real’ world going on around me. I bought this umbrella a year ago, remembering having one as a child and the feeling of safety it gave me.

Meet Jean-Francois. He is part of my personality but is far too enigmatic to reveal which part yet.
His favourite colour is teal. His favourite food is cheesy mashed potato and he drinks all his drinks through a straw.
He is an extremely skilled driver, scoring 100% in his most recent aptitude test. Unfortunately all his driving qualifications are paper based due to issues of scale (his arms are too short to reach the steering wheel so he has never actually driven a car).
Jean-Francois is a soprano and is president of the Tadcaster Male Voice Choir for Embodied Personality Traits. Unfortunately the club is still awaiting its first affiliate member and Jean-Francois is considering leaving after his objections to the recent subs increase were ignored.
Jean-Francois speaks fluent Esperanto and has a degree in linen trousers. He abhors, any act of violence, nationilsed rail services and Bernie Clifton.
He considers his biggest strengths to be his Shakespeare recitals, his personal favourite being King Richard the Third's soliloquy from the bard's play of the same name.
Individuals with paranoid personality disorder have a pervasive suspiciousness and distrust of others, leading to numerous interpersonal difficulties. They tend to see themselves as blameless, instead blaming others for their own mistakes and failures - even to the point of ascribing evil motives to others. Such people are chronically tense and "on guard," constantly expecting trickery and looking for clues to validate their expectations while disregarding all evidence to the contrary. They are often preoccupied with doubts about the loyalty of friends and hence are reluctant to confide i others. They commonly bear grudges, refuse to forgive perceived insults and slights, and are quick to react with anger and sometimes violent behavior. - Abnormal Psychology - fifteenth edition - James N. Butcher.
This photo didn't exactly turn out as planned, but, alas, I have to actually study and learn about personality disorders, so I should probably get back to reading the text.
The second edition of A Primer of Clinical Psychiatry provides a broad overview of the major topics in psychiatry and provides the clinical skills necessary for competent clinical practice. It also includes an up-to-date overview of the scientific literature behind this fascinating and challenging medical discipline.
This book covers in detail the psychiatric interview, mental state examination, and clinical investigations relevant to psychiatry.
All of the major syndromes of psychiatry are addressed including schizophrenia, depressive disorders, bipolar, anxiety, post-traumatic disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, eating disorders, somatoform disorders and personality disorders and cover epidemiology, aetiology and clinical aspects, and discussion of specific treatment approaches.
A separate section reviews biological and psychosocial aspects of treatment in psychiatry, with worked case examples. A chapter on psychiatric emergencies is included in this section.
Discrete chapters cover specialist areas such as child and adolescent psychiatry, old age psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, dual disability and substance use disorders.
Enhancing each chapter is a case-based role-play scenario, complete with model answers. Each scenario is set out to model modern pedagogical theory, with roles, setting, tasks, and model answers all articulated and cross-referenced to the core text. Readers can adopt various roles within the scenarios, including that of the doctor (general practice registrars, interns, and residents), allied health staff, or patients themselves and their relatives. The scenarios cover everything from basic skills such as taking a history or describing a disorder, to more advanced problems, such as working with the hostile family and assessing risk in the emergency setting. This case-based role-play approach is ideal for those preparing for psychiatry Observed Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs).
A Primer of Clinical Psychiatry 2nd edition aims to introduce the pertinent facts of clinical psychiatry to medical students and students of mental health disciplines. It will also be a useful resource for established clinicians, including GPs and the more advanced psychiatric trainee or mental health professional.
