Unusually a rest day for me on Wednesday coincided with a forecast of cloudless skies throughout West Cumbria.
The lazyarse in me decided against getting up early doors in minus temperatures to shoot a four loco 6C53 and instead I decided to major on the two daylight northbound loco-hauleds as both were allocated a large logo 37.
There had been a fair amount of snow on higher ground in the preceding days and I was hoping to incorporate it into my efforts.
Sadly coverage was much less than expected but having journeyed south to find the stretch of line with the correct orientation I persevered.
Here 37403 has rolled off the Duddon viaduct and is about to pass Foxfield's "up" distant with the 11.40 BIF - CAR.
It was a pleasure to meet Dean Cornthwaite here and I was very impressed with his pole set-up which made me feel quite inadequate with my mere telescopic ladder!
no longer a wine shot
I persevered, Capricorn, you know,
(see yesterday's pic for context)
only to establish once and for all that indeed wine in bw ceases to be wine,
colour is the only thing that creates wine out of water ,
ever a rose in bw is still a rose, it's got shape and texture to fall back on,
wine got notin'
except colour that is
so I ended up with a shot I rather like but it is as sober as they come
The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, which states that everything in the universe goes from an ordered state to a disordered state, is also an excellent explanation of the 4th dimension, linear time... you can't go from one state to another without time in between. Time refuses to slow down one tick for any of us… but we can record snippets of it, like this, and light is frozen in time.
We photographers can play with that light, add snap and glow, depth and definition, and make the world our palette. We can take that world within the image and order it and disorder it to our heart’s content… and it becomes art. That “art” can help us see this world in new ways… yet, does that change the reality of this world?
In some ways, time’s incessant march toward disorder can be beautiful… beaches, canyons, deserts, mountains, and valleys are all evidence of earth, weather, and gravity working in concert with thermodynamics… and it’s evident throughout the Universe, because everything in this universe is subject to the laws of nature. Yet, those laws will never relent, and their eventuality can be anything but beautiful. Physicists have determined what that “eventuality” might look like, and it’s downright scary: having exhausted its practical energy, the Universe becomes nothing more than a void of depleted atoms and some scattered photons that hadn’t gotten the message that there was no longer a reason to shed light… there will be no living creature to determine the reality of it.
There are many in this world who feel humanity can reach a place of order according to whatever their proclivity seems to be… but “thermodynamics” doesn’t prove that out, just as events of late in this world seem to point out. Much of that proclivity in this country (and likely with others) comes straight out of the 1970’s in the form of militant autonomy, also known as “hippie” ethic. In other words, many feel they can do or say or be any outrageous thing they choose without the least impunity whatsoever. Even when their inclination is toward an idealistic “peace” and “love” and “good”, if they define that outside of a transcendent source, is any of it truly good? Often, how “peaceful” and “loving” they are when you disagree with them answers that quite evidently... and that's truly not good. That ethic is now known as “progressivism”, which has become a religion unto itself, and though it’s not atheist per se, its name is a contradiction… unless you consider an eventual step toward godlessness as progression. There are consequences to that, and our world is witness to that now. Such determination only proves to me that humanity is inescapably caught in the relentless pull of the black hole of disorder... but doesn’t that assume humanity was once ordered? I believe that, once, it was in a place of order… it was called Eden.
I know from personal experience that any such understanding offends many people, as they don't want God saying "No" to whatever their chosen tendency is... but I have a question for them... have you ever thought that God's "No" can lead to a greater "Yes"? Though they are immutable, the Ten Commandments aren't merely relentless laws... if they were, everyone who's ever lived would be at total enmity with God, as no one can live up to them entirely. They're connected... if you've ever broken one, you've broken them all. Rather, they just prove how lost we are without a Savior. Our only hope in an order that truly matters isn’t in nature, but rather in what lays beyond nature. At best, our hearts are still a long way from the manger that we celebrate in this season… for some, a lot further away than 2,000 years can take them.
Where the church and culture diverge, it's culture that must change. In many ways, however, the church is becoming the culture it's here to address. The 2nd Chapter of Revelation points out something that I find not just interesting, but also relevant to this age… are you sensitive to this too?... “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write:
These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands. I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.”
For those who may not understand, "the love you had at first" is not some noble idealistic notion to fix mankind... it comes as the One whose birth we celebrate in this season. Perhaps it’s time to get back to that “first love”, as the answers we all seek for a hurting world are there and there alone.
Auf Wiedersehen meine Liebe, auf Wiedersehen .. 😣 Heute habe ich sie verschickt an einen neuen Besitzer, er hätte lange nach dieser Gitarre gesucht, war es doch seine erste E-Gitarre.
Goodbye my love, goodbye .. 😣 Today I sent it to a new owner, he would have been looking for this guitar for a long time as it was his first electric guitar.
Taken me a couple of days to start to get to grips with my new Laowa 25mm f2.8 2.5-5X Ultra-Macro. No steady shot, AF etc, just basically a semi-microscope tube. Incredible when you get something in focus, frustrating 9/10 times, but I shall persevere!
This spiderling is approx 5mm in size and was basking in the spring sun along with some of its brethren on our decking step,
We finally visited another area near us that we hadn't been to before and were pleasantly surprised at the great trails, streams, and marshes in the area. This is one of the creeks we hiked along.
While hubby and I were out and about in Seattle last night, we passed by a large processing plant with this flag perched high above the building.
As I watching our tattered flag Flickr-ing through wind, smoke, and light, I thought about the recent struggles not only in this country, but across the world.
Me thinks this is the perfect image to sum up the last few years.

It's not exactly healthy either, but I'm going to persevere! There are lots of buds, maybe it will be ok after all. I'm very happy! :)
I see 4 setae in favor of H. bilineatus but I need your confirmation. Initially, considering the environment and habitus I was persevered to see H. claviger but the 4 setae created confusion.
Yeeaaa I've been waiting for this. Especially had to make up for it given the 258 working narrowly evaded me. But paid the price of not getting to ride this as it subbed at Brent Cross next 😣 A snapper's dilemma - to photo or to board first? 😫 At least caught the daylight while I still could.
This picturesque but unused barn is shuddering off the latest big snowfall, persevering until our Minnesota spring starts its annual pilgrimage. My father started farming in the Dust Bowl, endured droughts, hail and poor crop prices through the years before selling his farm in his 70s to finally have two nickles to rub together. His base premise for success in life was to endure the storms, get up early every day and work long and hard.

Remember how I was whining about trying this and that and failing so many times (with my photos) last few months? Oh well, if I didn't persevere I might not be able to do something like this! I did this image like it's the easiest thing. Sigh. To experience growth is painful but it's definitely all worth it. Be thankful that you're growing.

The sunsets on the north-west coast of Scotland have to be seen to be believed. I took a chance one night after it had been raining to drag myself out and have a look from a high viewpoint just to see if the sun would make an appearance. Perseverence payed of and I was rewarded with this glorious view. Have a great weekend coming up my friends and thank you so much for all your support. I wish you all well my friends.
Although we had summited this one MANY years ago, neither of us had remembered how tedious and challenging the scramble below Old Baldy Peak was. We persevered, and had a fine day. Old Baldy Ridge which lies below Old Baldy Peak is an amazing meadow of wildflowers.
This image was made on New Years Eve, I'm sure most of you have had the same problem trying to get an image of somewhere very busy.
It took what seem like an eternity to get a shot with no one on the bridge and then when I did the mist had gone but I persevered and after about 2 hours got this one, I think it was worth the effort !!
Love is patient, Love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast,
It is not proud, it is not rude,
It is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered,
It keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil
But rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts,
Always hopes, always perseveres.

Ich mag es bis vor das Geschäft zu fahren .. das spart Zeit und ist gut für die Absätze meiner italienischen Schuhe, denn sie kosten ein Vermögen .. 😣
I like to drive to the front of the store .. it saves time and is good for the heels of my Italian shoes, because they cost a fortune .. 😣
It was a very foggy day in Pembrokeshire. But I still persevered to get some shots. The beach was very busy There were even people building sandcastles with their children.
Poor mayweed grown in the middle of a country road, but it persevered, as if it had a choice.

There are times when you should hold your ground, have patience, and persevere in asking for that which you want. Because you just may get it.
In this case, this pelican got the fish... He stood there, patient, with a strong, keen eye fixated on the fisherman... who eventually relented, pulled a fish out of his catch bucket, and gave it to Sir Pelican...

How the days are shortening. To catch the early light now means setting my alarm 45 minutes later. Unfortunately the dog’s body clock is still set at 5.15 😣

Following Rob Pitt's footsteps (thanks for the thorough description!) I managed to convince Rudi to go out for sunrise on one of the windiest days of the year so far. We got hit by wind, rain and snow but we persevered. It's a brilliant location and finally, Rudi's clear sky curse failed to materialise!

The early crocuses (Crocus tommasinianus) first appeared here in mid February. When that happens, they usually have to endure at least ONE bout with winter. Some years are worse than others, and even in the bad ones, these hardy little flowers somehow persevere.
What nature threw at them this year was an overnight blast of icy wind and a thin crust of snow - which, by early afternoon, had all but disappeared in the warmth of a comforting Spring sun.

I got back a few days ago from my 3-night Crater Lake workshop, and I'm finally getting myself into gear again. The workshop went well except for uncooperative weather, but we were able to persevere. On the third night, we were rewarded with a brief view of the northern lights, as seen in this panorama. View it on black for maximum shadow detail, and note the Andromeda galaxy toward the northern end.
In other news, just before leaving for Crater Lake I found out that my *other* pano of the lake, taken this last February, received third place in TWAN's Earth and Sky photo contest, which is a huge honor for me.
I still have two openings in my August 15th Fort Rock workshop, where we'll get unique access to the old homesteads at the Fort Rock Homestead Museum and shoot them under a starry night sky.

The Longshan Temple, one of the oldest in Taipei, has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, the last after being bombed in World War II. Dedicated, like most of Taiwanese temples, to Buddhist and Taoist divinities, it is one of the temples with more devotees in the city, which continually visit it to make offerings and worship the various deities.
The photographer, always respecting the faithfuls, is well received and the architecture of the temple is really worthy to immortalize. The biggest problem is that, even at dusk, the influx of visitors between worshipers and tourists is enormous. Therefore, it is necessary to be filled with patience and make a great number of photographs, to be able to mix them and eliminate in the post-processing, as cleanly as possible, the trail of people who will pass continuously in front of us.

What is it that makes some sandstone stronger than that surrounding it? Why would some be strong enough to resist the mighty forces placed against it and not give way to the constant pressure and wear and tear? All I know is that when something or someone is strong and able to withstand and persevere, they can, with time... change the course of the forces around them.

Things don't change much at the long abandoned and badly decayed blue sweater house.A large part of the house(through the door straight ahead)collapsed years ago and the upstairs has been pretty much inaccessible for a long time-I keep thinking about trying to get up there, but I haven't talked myself into in yet.But maybe that's what makes this old place so special,it perseveres quietly while everything around it changes...
I had seen a photo of this spot in a book by Bill Campbell and Nye Simmons years ago. Ever since, I have searched for it on my annual trip to the Smokies. I knew it was on the Middle River in the Tremont section of the park, but no matter how many times I hiked up that silly river, I just couldn't find it. Until this year. Finally!

The Gothic Quarter is a labyrinth of small alleyways.
The Gothic Quarter is the oldest part of the city where centuries-old buildings have been persevered.
Some date back from before the Middle Ages (including Roman times even).
During the reign of Augustus, this area was chosen for the foundation of a new colony.

I am really struggling to maintain interest in photography at the moment and the new format of Flickr isn't encouraging me to persevere. So, I'll leave you (hopefully temporarily) with some of my thoughts on how to read a photograph
