The full painting, Humble Menage (Elizabeth Nourse, 1895~97), is a kitchen table scene. But the likeness to Johannes Vermeer (1665), "Girl with the Pearl Earring," comes to mind because of the fascinating power of window light to illuminate the subject by gradations of light and shadow; not in harsh shadows, but rather in delicate shadings of color and contrast.

Habits are formed early. So it seems reasonable to think that young people on field-trips or accompanying adults and who enjoy the experience will form a life-long habit of seeking out art and other museum galleries in the decades of their lives to come.
