The path around the lagoon is not even two kilometres long but this is a visit to savour and enjoy. We are inside a tiny reminder of ancient primitive forest that once extended over vast tracts of the Iberian Peninsula. Thick-trunked cork oaks "uncorked" (Quercus suber) make up the tree vegetation around this natural sanctuary along with ash trees (Fraxinus angustifolia). Among the dense vegetation in the interior are species such as the wild blackberry (Rubus ulmifolius) along with wild grapevines (Vitis vinifera sub. sylvestris), honeysuckle (Lonicera periclimenum sub. hispanicus), willow trees (Salix atrocinerea) and an endemic species to the south-west of Spain; a subspecies of buckthorn (Frangula alnus sub. baetica). This buckthorn was once a prolific plant in these parts back in the Tertiary Period and is now a rather scarce reminder of the great forests that grew here.
