June 2018: Bridge over Don for AWPR (Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route) Aberdeen bypass dual carriageway north of Dyce
I was driving back to Kayenta from my night shift in Chinle when I spotted in my peripheral vision several small forms along a fence line a hundred or more feet off the shoulder of Highway 160, seven miles north of Kayenta, on an access road to property surrounding a large volcanic formation known as "Church Rock"-- also an apparently popular drinking & littering spot. I stopped and turned around. Sure enough, it was a group of five recently weaned puppies.
I took these photos of the three that cooperated for the camera. Pictured here is one of three mostly black collie-mix pups and the one odd-marked "runt" of the litter, in fairly weak condition, having likely been excluded from feeding by her larger litter mates. Minutes later I continued home and prepared my car to carry them back, but not before calling a colleague who has more dog rescue expertise than me. I'm told they should be quickly accepted with an adoption program in Colorado due to their young age, if I'm willing to drive them to Cortez or Durango, 130-170 miles away. I am.
Upon return I was able to capture five of them, but the sixth wouldn't let me get close at all. That evening on my way back to Chinle for the night shift I spotted number six and left food and water. The next morning on my way home I checked but could not find the puppy, but the food was all gone and so was the water, more than enough for single small puppy. I assumed a coyote took care of the food and the puppy, so I left with the plan of returning in a couple of hours in the hopes I was mistaken. I was quite mistaken. Upon return I found number six in the usual spot, along with number seven. Both were too difficult to approach, so I borrowed a pair of live traps for cats (well proven for puppies, too) and set them up around noon-time. I went home for lunch and when I returned, both traps were sprung and both puppies were outside warily eyeing me. I reset the traps closer to where they tended to hide and left. I left for Chinle about a half hour early that evening (the evening of this writing) to check and with luck, bring both dogs home. One was trapped and the other was hiding. So now there are six at home, and the seventh will, I hope, evade the coyotes (there's good dense brush to hide in). I'll re-deploy the trap on my way home in the morning.

Sandhamn (Swedish for "Sand Harbour") is a small settlement in the central-peripheral part of the Stockholm Archipelago in central-eastern Sweden, approximately 50 km (30 mi) east of Stockholm. Sandhamn is located on the island Sandön ("Sand Island"), which is, however, colloquially referred to as Sandhamn.
One of the most important natural ports in the archipelago with easy access to the Swedish capital, Sandhamn has been popular for pleasure boating since the late 19th century. It is known for its tavern, its clubhouse, and its harbour.
The island is approximately 9 km (5.6 mi) long and 6 km (3.7 mi) and consists mostly of sand and is dominated by beaches, dunes and especially pine forests.
Sandhamn receives an additional 100,000 visitors annually.
"Viveca Stens" popular novels come to life in "The Sandhamn Murders", a perfect mix of Nordic crime & the beautiful surroundings of the outer Stockholm archipelago.

Four years into this garden and 12 at my last one have produced only a couple of what might be original observations. One is that hedges should not be planted on property lines where they easily get hacked at by neighbors just when birds are trying to nest. So here I left a 3 foot wide path along the upslope border and ran a loose hedgerow of mixed ceanothus, mountain mahogany, coffee berry and manzanita below it. The first to shoot up were the ceanothuses, seen above. The upshot means the birds can nest a safe if not ideal distance from neighbors who believe in bi-monthly trimming and blowing and I can get in and weed along a difficult fence without too much difficulty. Best of all, the dogs have access to do what dogs do: patrol the perimeter.
