The Stockholm archipelago is the largest archipelago in Sweden, and the second-largest archipelago in the Baltic Sea (the largest being across the Baltic in Finland).

Today the archipelago is a popular holiday destination with some 50,000 holiday cottages (owned mainly by Stockholmers). Visiting the larger islands in the archipelago is easy all year round, but during winter period the routes depend on the ice conditions. Several companies have regular routes.

The Dolmen de Kermario at the side of the alignments of Kermario, one of the three major groups of stone rows at the megalithic sites of Carnac, Brittany, France

Some background information:

The Carnac stones are an exceptionally dense collection of megalithic sites near the south coast of Brittany in in the French department of Morbihan. They consist of stone alignments, dolmens (stone tombs), tumuli (burial mounds) and single menhirs (standing stones). More than 3,000 prehistoric standing stones were hewn from local granite and erected by the pre-Celtic people of Brittany and form the largest such collection in the world. Most of the stones are within the Breton municipality of Carnac, but some to the east are within neighboring La Trinité-sur-Mer. The stones were erected at some stage during the Neolithic period, probably around 3300 BC, but some may date to as early as 4500 BC.

There are three major groups of stone rows – Ménec, Kermario and Kerlescan, which altogether are known as the alignments of Carnac. Another much smaller group of stones, the Petit-Ménec alignments, can be found in the neigbouring village of La Trinité-sur-Mer. These four groups may have once formed a single group but have been split up as stones were removed for other purposes. The standing stones are made of weathered granite from local outcroppings that once extensively covered the area.

The Ménec alignments near the village of Le Ménec consist of eleven converging rows of menhirs stretching for 1,165 by 100 metres (3,822 by 328 feet). At either end the remains of stone circles can still be seen. The largest stones, around 4 metres (13 feet) high, are at the wider, western end. The stones then become as small as 0.6 metres (2 feet 0 inches) high along the length of the alignment before growing in height again toward the extreme eastern end.

The Kermario alignments consists of 1029 stones in ten columns, about 1,300 m (4,300 feet) in length. At their eastern end, where the stones are shorter, a stone circle was revealed by aerial photography. The Kerlescan alignments are a smaller group of 555 stones, further to the east of the other two sites. They are composed of 13 lines with a total length of about 800 metres (2,600 feet), ranging in height from 80 cm (2 feet 7 inch) to 4 m (13 feet). At the extreme west, where the stones are tallest, there is another stone circle which has 39 stones.

There are several dolmens scattered around the area, like the one of Kermario in this picture. These dolmens are generally considered to have been tombs. However, the acidic soil of Brittany has eroded away the bones. They were constructed with several large stones supporting a capstone, then buried under a mound of earth. In many cases, the mound is no longer present, sometimes due to archeological excavation, and only the large stones remain, in various states of ruin.

At the end of the 18th century, the alignments of Carnac were attributed to druidic gatherings. But just a few years later, it was claimed that they represent stars in the sky. A later theory from 1887 argued for a connection between the rows of stones and the directions of sunsets at the solstices. More recent studies assume an astronomical purpose or support the concept of a geometric megalithic yard. However, the most modern theory suggests that the stone rows belonged to some kind of defensive structure against preternatural menaces originating from the nearby sea. Anyway, a generally valid theory regarding the purpose of the alignments has not been agreed on yet.

Since 1996, the alignments of Carnac – or to be more precise – the Ménec alignments are part of the UNESCO tenative list, a list of worldwide architectural and cultural heritage sites, which are considered to become UNESCO world heritage sites sometime. If you plan a visit there, please be aware that Carnac can be overcrowded by tourists at certain hours of the day. There are also several touristic offers of clever tradespeople that cost money. However, you can still eplore the alignments on your own, although it’s no longer possible to stroll around between the stone rows as they are protected from regardless visitors by having been fenced in for quite some time.

It's been a fairly lean period for me lately, not able to get out much for one reason or another and when I could get out conditions were a bit of a battle.

This is a picture I made a couple of days ago during a bleak and miserable spell in the weather.

Thanks for looking.

Rail Adventure's 43480 emerges from the Great Western booking hall which spans the lines between platforms 2 and 3 at Tyseley at dusk on a chilly Friday evening. The 125 Group in association with RA and Chiltern Railways had organised this tour reminiscent of the Master Cutler in connection with the 125th Anniversary of the opening of London Marylebone. 1Z46 was due a crew change here and with that duly completed the tour departed this delightful station which is packed with period features of the railways of yesteryear.

Vraiment heureux ! =D

It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas and as usual in this period it's time for a Christmas themed creation.

This cozy shelter is the home of Santa Claus, who is preparing his world tour for delivering gifts. It's called Santa's Cottage and you can support it on LEGO IDEAS too.

If you like the bizarre Santa's Cottage please consider to give it a chance of becoming an actual LEGO IDEAS set. You can shortcut straight to LEGO IDEAS platform using this handy link:

Santa's Cottage on LEGO IDEAS!

Santa, who is coming home from a relaxing walk, has also a nice off-road vehicle painted with a color scheme matching with the cottage. You can spot it on the right.Santa's Cottage features a classic Xmas color scheme, an uncommon shape and an unconventional doors/windows style.

The main feature is probably the asymmetrical roof with a very sloping shape to the left. The woodshed is located under the excess roof.

The red/white/black color combo is simple but effective, and the snowy trees in the background match well.

Last but not least the door and windows are round, a shape rarely spotted on a cottage, but quite common in Hobbit houses.

If this house reminds you of anything you are right, it's basically my Blue Cottage set up for the Christmas holidays.

This is probably my last MOC for this year and I wish you all Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

- - -

The granites of the Dreisessel massif were formed in the Upper Carboniferous around 330 to 310 million years ago through the melting of presumably sedimentary rocks. Slight differences in the chemical composition, temperature and cooling conditions of the melts mean that not all granites are the same. Due to different grain sizes and mineral compositions, several granite varieties can be distinguished in the area around the Dreisesselberg, each of which emerged from its own melt.

While the coarse-grained “Dreisessel Granite” in the summit area has relatively uniform grain sizes of minerals, two others show a “porphyry” structure: the “Haidmühle Granite” only contains a few large ones, while the “Steinberg Granite” in the lower part of the Dreisesselstrasse contains numerous large ones Potassium feldspar phenocrysts. Another variety is the fine-grained “Eisgarn Granite”.

Creation of the rock castle

When a molten rock crystallizes, due to a reduction in volume, dividing surfaces, so-called fissures, form in the solidifying rock. Favored by the warm, humid climate, chemical decomposition of the rock occurred, especially in the Tertiary period. Infiltrating water could preferentially penetrate into the rock along fissure surfaces and round off the corners and edges of the cuboid fissure bodies. The granite replacement initially remained lying between these wool-sack-like bodies of solid rock until it was removed and washed away along with the overlying soil cover in the Quaternary, the youngest geological epoch. Only the solid granite bodies remained standing, forming today's Dreisessel summit castle.

During the early period of Norse rule, the Orkney Mainland parish of Orphir was a centre of power.

Today, the parish contains the remains of Scotland's only surviving circular medieval church.

Built in the late 11th, or early 12th century, the Orphir Round Kirk is thought to have been built by Earl Hakon. Dedicated to Saint Nicholas, its design was inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem.

At the time of the kirk's construction, the Great Crusades were in full swing and the circular church had become a popular design with returning crusaders attempting to copy the famous structure in the Holy Land.

The first bridge over the Frognerdammen canal was built in 1914 and led to an exhibition dedicated to the centenary of the Norwegian Constitution. The modern bridge uses only its supports.

Reconstruction of the bridge was carried out from 1918 to 1930, during this period, four columns with sculptures depicting the struggle of a man with dragons were erected at its corners

Most of the 58 sculptures are dedicated to the theme of family, the relationship between parents and children.

Founded in 1642, Kagetsu is perhaps the oldest restaurant in Nagasaki. Located in the old red light district of Maruyama, Kagetsu to this day serves exquisite shippoku cuisine, combining the best of Chinese, Western and Japanese cooking, embodying the spirit of Nagasaki's position as the gateway to Japan during the approximate 200 years of national seclusion in the Edo period. During this time, only the Dutch and Chinese were allowed the right to trade with Japan, and it was all done in Nagasaki.

Being the premier restaurant in Maruyama, Kagetsu had a very distinguished list of guests, both foreign and Japanese, including Sakamoto Ryoma and other revolutionaries who helped plot the downfall of the Shogunate. In a drunken state of excitement one night, Ryoma drew his sword and hacked away at some woodwork. The scars are still visible. And unlike the sword scars at the Teradaya in Kyoto, these scars are the real deal. So in case you are wondering, yes,Kagetsu survived the atomic bombing with minimal damage. It's location is protected by steep hills, which sheltered it from the shock waves.

Maruyama still has an active geisha community and it possible to arrange for geisha entertainment at Kagetsu while enjoying the amazing cuisine.
