CCBC Essex Academic Theatre presents Henrik Ibsen’s ‘A Doll House’

8 pm Oct. 17-19, 10 am Oct. 21 and 1pm Oct. 22, College Community Center Theatre, CCBC Essex

Commonly considered a pillar of modern theatre, A Doll House explores the lives of two people in the same marriage who are living in entirely different worlds. Torvald Helmer believes he has the perfect life and the perfect marriage with his devoted, childlike wife Nora. When Nora's old friend Mrs. Linde comes to her looking for work, Nora is happy to ask her husband to find her a position. Unfortunately, the man losing the position is Krogstad, who holds the note on a debt Nora incurred years before without her husband's knowledge. When the disclosure of Nora's long-held secret reveals her husband's true nature, their idealized vision of their lives, their home and their marriage cannot survive.

The play's premiere in 1879 sparked outrage and controversy across Europe, and brought accusations of immorality against the playwright, Henrik Ibsen. In the years since, A Doll House has become one of the most often performed plays in the world, largely due to the clarity and insight of Ibsen's criticism of his society's treatment of women. As the author of Peer Gynt, The Master Builder and Hedda Gabler, Ibsen is now one of the most produced playwrights in the world.

Academic Theatre at CCBC Essex brings Ibsen’s iconic drama to the stage 8 pm Oct. 17, 18 and 19; 10 am Oct. 21 and 1pm Oct. 22 in the College Community Center Theatre (formerly the B Building Theatre) at CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Boulevard. Tickets are $8 general admission and $5 for seniors, students, CCBC faculty, staff and alumni. For tickets and information, call the CCBC Box Office at 443-840-ARTS (2787).

The ensemble cast includes Maia Punksungka of Rosedale in the role of Nora and William Meister of Parkville as Torvald. Other featured cast members are Aanisah Saunderlin of Baltimore (Mrs. Linde), Juan Hunter of Parkville (Dr. Rank), Thomas Gardner of Joppa (Krogstad), Rebecca Goode of Baltimore (The Maid/Girl Child), Ian McDonnell of Lutherville (Delivery Boy/Boy Child) and Ashley Saville of Edgewood (Girl Playing with Dolls/Nanny).

A CHORUS LINE - July 12-21, 2024

Urinetown is a story set in the future where a drought of epic proportions has forced corrupt city officials to come up with a unique way to conserve water. The solution is that people may only use public restrooms and they have to pay for the "Privilege To Pee."
