This proverb describes a shift in the student's perception, not a magical manifestation. The "teacher" is likely already in your life, but you only recognize their value once you become receptive to learn.
This image is inspired by my photographic friend Philippe de Feluy. He published an image under this title, and I am continuing this process by taking up the lead and by applying it to my self-portraits. So, where do I stand between reality and imagination? How should I present myself visually? In front of my car or the things I own, my bookshelf to highlight my academic affiliation? Dressed up formally or, as here, in casual clothing? Myself, as a lone individual or together with others and thus emphasising sociability? A bit wild and unkempt in order to demonstrate my distaste for blind conformity? Well, I chose the garden shed, the island, the last refugium, a place where the constraints are minimal. And I am holding a hammer. Should I not? An octogenarian with attitude? At least in private? An illusionary way to continue with the ideals I had half a century ago? You will have noticed by now that one side of the equation, "reality", is crumbling in speedy progression. It is the "imagination" bit that dominates. This image is pure imagination, a design to be used on a public stage where a play is being shown that can only be seen in my mind. I am not sure how Philippe would see things, but in my mind it is clear that when it comes to self-portraits we deal with our imagination and we must leave it to others to discover the reality of it. There is no truth. There’s only perception.
Gustave Flaubert
Non esiste la verità, solo la percezione.
A calmness arises when we are in a quiet place with a sensory subject that brings our mental focus out of hiding and into the here and now.
I have written a short Facebook post that uses this image and the original image as examples of my opinion on artistic photography. It will give you a peek at how much changed in the post processing.

Time for a touch of minimalism. This is a little scene I found at Wellington Reservoir in Western Australia on an overcast day. The dead tree stump poking out of the water caught my attention especially and I decided to take few long exposures to create a subtle moody image.
More about this photo on my Blog and Facebook page.
In this slot canyon in Anza-Borrego Park in California, light presses gently between layers of stone, revealing form. I think this image is less about illumination than about proximity: planes are held close, surfaces are shaped by time, and silence is given weight.
"Compression" is part of my ongoing work of exploring how minimal light, shadow, and structure can slow perception and invite sustained looking.
Again I crossed into another Vancouver location, where umbrellas dotted the sky with a festive look. This place was an outdoor eatery where they appeared to float. My shot is an attempt to convey this.
It was another hot summer day, but filled with the many Vancouver photographic opportunities. In this image, primary colors appear above, leaving one with an perception of basic enjoyment.

The Berbers in Morocco as well as in the rest of North Africa are considered to be the natives of this part of the continent. Most of the Berbers were originally nomads who moved their location camps according to the pastures for their cattle and the climate. Historically, Berber traders were responsible for the transportation of goods by camel caravans. Five trans-Saharan trade routes stretched across the Sahara from the northern Mediterranean coast of Africa to the large cities, which are located on the southern edge of the Sahara, such as Timbouctou in Mali. From there the goods were distributed all over the world.
Despite numerous attempts to unify the populations of North Africa, the Berbers, or “free men” as they call themselves have continued to defend a strong identity and independent culture over the centuries. For example, the Tuaregs we know today are also Berbers, who have remained nomadic and wandering in the desert. Their name comes from the Arabic “Touareg” which means “looters”. In fact, during periods of drought, they had no choice but to move north to escape climatic hostilities. Arriving in isolated villages, they soon got into the habit of temporarily settling down and plundering the resources of the villagers; that’s why they were called “Tuaregs”. The Kabyles, in northern Algeria, or the Zenagas (formerly called “Moors”) of Mauritania, are examples of Berber peoples living according to their own traditions, with their own convictions and perception of the world around them.
The figure is made of cast aluminium, and the helmet visor is made of gold-plated bronze. The artistic statement plays with people's ideas of space and protection, as well as their perception of their environment. Grüter demonstrates how humans may feel in an increasingly complex and anonymous world. The high-tech shell of a space suit protects the body from external influences, but inside there is silence, isolation and abandonment. The sculpture can also be seen as a metaphor for human ambition and the exploration of the unknown.

Turrell has studied both the nature of light and the psychology of perception. At sunrise or sunset in the "Amarna" one participates in an experience that uses light and colour to create a sense of altered space. I mentioned that Turrell was raised a Quaker, whose emphasis on the "Inner Light" is central to everything they do. This belief has never left Turrell. He walks in the Light and uses the light spectrum as a metaphor for what he considers the essence of the Light.
On the top right hand corner of this montage you'll see rows of seats that extend right around the installation. These are just like those found in old Quaker Meeting Houses. In fact the Society of Friends (Quakers) in Hobart use this space from time to time for meetings. A Quaker meeting is held in a silent meditative state, at once individual and corporate. That's Mt Wellington / kunanyi in the background.
Sitting silently and looking up (another metaphorical act) the colours change so gradually that one moves through the entire visible colour spectrum over the next 45 minutes. That rectangular window in the ceiling allows one to look through and see the sky. But even the sky seems to change colour and vibrancy with the changing of the light.
"Pareidolia is the tendency for incorrect perception of a stimulus as an object, pattern or meaning known to the observer, such as seeing shapes in clouds, seeing faces in inanimate objects or abstract patterns, or hearing hidden messages in music."
I don't think I have it very strongly as I often can't see things other people see but I can't walk past this tree trunk without seeing a person reclining casually there.
We all have our own perceptions in life and at some point of time we try to convince others to agree to our perception thinking that ours is the only right one.
In this image, a circle shape can be seen from top but it is also a flask-shape when it is viewed from other angle, both shapes are real and both angles are right, it is just a difference of perception.
We should respect each other's perceptions, point-of-views, ideas, suggestions, advises, etc. and should be open to those things for better human relation.
