Food - Macro Monday

He really loves the peanuts, so much so he came back the following day and chewed a hole in it and all the peanuts fell to the ground.

As that had to be binned, I'm awaiting in the post a so called squirrel proof peanut feeder, but these are cleaver little creatures and I think they will just see it as a challenge!

MacroMonday, January 23: It's A-Peeling To Me

I took this shot with my old Nikon D80,

I stopped putting food in the feeders till I solve the problem with the rats.

#Macro Mondays and #Refreshments”.

We have pecan trees behind our fence and this is where these squirrels live. Still they can't resist coming over the fence and dealing with barking dogs to get some off menu peanuts.

Happy Macro Monday!!!

Such peanuts lovers they are constantly around any feeders in the fall making their presence known by the noisy calls. I love to observe them as they fly and grab the seeds or peanuts.

"Bird colouration is produced in a variety of ways, of which pigmentation is just one. The blue appearance of many blue birds is due to refraction – a light scattering phenomenon. The barb structure of Blue Jay feathers is such that, when light hits them, the blue light is refracted while the other wavelength of visible light are absorbed by the melanin, making them look blue.

If you come across a Blue Jay feather, try backlighting it. Without direct light, the blue is no longer reflected and the feather will look brown." - NatureCandada.ca

For 'Looking Close on Friday'. The theme is 'nuts'.

This was taken at Elizabeth Morton Bird Sanctuary where someone had left peanuts for the birds on the railing!

This little grey squirrel loved peanuts and would just sit in the parking lot as we studied each other!

The blue jays are always so excited when the peanuts are out.

We had some snow Sunday morning, then lots and lots of rain so the snow disappeared again, but I saw the squirrel in the tree and hoped she would come to visit. The snow almost buried my little snowman, and the blue jays came and ate all the peanuts, several times, but no luck with the squirrel!

Not sure what this little chipmunk was looking at but his little pose made me think he was hoping to discover where all the goodies were coming from.

*** Please note there is also a series of photos in the Comments section.

First of all, apologies for the feeder shot. Well, actually not really because I meant to do this for entirely educational purposes. The reason for this shot is that I wanted to document beyond any doubt that there is interspecies communication. It appears that the Downies have been learning from the Blue Jays and are now as much into peanuts as the Jays are. This is also supported by a tremendous increase in the consumption of peanuts in my yard. Interestingly enough, not only the Downys are into this but the Crow from the previous picture has learned to like peanuts as well. Although today she actually consumed half a can of cat food which I gave her as a reward for hanging out in my bird stand, the one that she previously rejected to my great consternation.

So, just remember that you saw this here first, Downies like peanuts.

On to the background in this. No, not the flowers, pretty as they are. The dark stuff on the right. Yes, the area that looks black as night. Said what? Night? as in Night Moves

An oldie I don't think i ever posted..I have lots of blue jays who compete with the squirrel for peanuts..

I give you the new Grinch, our resident red squirrel, Dr. Sinister! He loaded up his sled with stolen peanuts and rode back up to Mount Crumpet!

I saw the new Grinch movie this past weekend and didn’t care for it. They didn’t use the narration from the original story and the actor’s voice did not suit him. They shouldn’t have messed with perfection, the original Dr. Seuss cartoon and the wonderful Jim Carey movie. I think Dr. Sinister would have done a better job! LOL

I would like to thank all of you that have taken the time to view and comment on my photos, it is very much appreciated. Tina & the Puglets xo

HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN---HEEEE

What´s that? For the Blue tit the first time, he also looks skeptical!

When Birds Have Words

Taken out the kitchen window.

I haven't put out peanuts for a while and the birds came in droves. There were a lot of peanuts but that didn't matter!

This Tufted Titmouse is in a dilemma about what which peanut to get... It's like he was thinking, "Mine, all mine, but I can carry only one, which one to get...." 😆

Bokeh Wednesday

Took this out the kitchen window. It was a buffet for the Squirrels.

It's been a while since I posted a squirrel shot.

I kind of miss these critters. As soon as I exit the house with my "snackaroo bucket" ,they know what's in store for them.

Tasty morsels!

Hope you enjoy!

After a brief interlude about some trivia concerning wasting time, we are now back in full swing with our educational series on the attraction of peanuts to birds, all kinds of birds that is. Wait, that's not quite what this is about. We are documenting the communication among different bird species and how they observe and learn from each other. Here we are depicting the Red Breasted Nuthatch (herein after referred to simply as the Nuthatch) displaying his new found knowledge obtained from the Downy regarding the nutritional value of peanuts. It is interesting to note in this image that the Nuthatch (as does the Downy) has a technique that differs somewhat from those of the Blue Jays. Whereas Blue Jays simply pull out the whole peanut and then fly away with it and start to hammer the shell into oblivion, the Downy and the Nuthatch leave the peanut in place and peck a hole in the shell and simply retrieve the contents of the peanut. Different, yet highly effective. Not only have they learned from the Blue Jays, they have developed a technique of their own playing to their evolutionary strengths. Brilliant. Call someone a birdbrain again and all you are doing is paying them a compliment. Perhaps better call them a vegetable. And that of course brings us to Frank Zappa and Call any Vegetable.

Warning: some swearing does occur towards the end of the song. Get your little ones out of the room.

We were tickled today to see the little Chipmunk make another appearance this morning!

I immediately raced outside to fill all the feeders, Goodie Bowls, and broadcast a few scoops of treats for those who like to forage.

It wasn't long before Chippie discovered this little feeder chock full of peanuts. I broke down and cracked the window enough to grab a few shots.

** It's been so hot here lately, opening the window for birdwatching is almost a no no, but today I made an exception. Considering how hot it's been lately in other areas, it almost feels wrong to complain about the heat here, but upper 90's F (36 C) is still hot!

This is the little resident squirrel 'Peanut', going nuts over peanuts.

The Bluejays and the Titmice who visit my garden love peanuts. They wait for me in the garden and watch as I put peanuts out in different places for them to find. It's like a game for them. Yet, the bluejays are very shy about the camera. I captured this moment from inside my kitchen window.
