2013-03-17 - Sometimes I wonder why certain kinds of images just work. There are some guidelines in photography and I guess this one follows a lot of them: rule of thirds, pattern in the background, unified tones, contrasts... Is the combination of all of that the reason I like this photograph?
"Seeing abstract value patterns, not just the literal subject, is one of the first and most difficult things for a growing artist to learn." (Jane R. Hofstetter)

The qualities I thought a pattern should have is that it should be repetitive and it should have color. I think it is important to look at the natural world because it allows you to see original content that is not man and you can capture something that occurs on its own volition. I think that nature is beautiful and my inspiration came from nature is of how people will often take pictures of scenery as a way of preserving that memory of nature. I drew that patterns of Polaroids as a way of showing the beauty of nature being captured in a photo. Working in illustrator is difficult and i had to restart multiple times because it simply was not working out or I had clicked something and the image would change. What was also difficult is that the lines are vectors and work as a single layer, changing the image would alter the lines and would end up as a mess. However through struggle it because easier moving and creating shapes. I also learned how to use the bucket-fill tool.
After scratching my head about smooth continuous bezier curves, I remember to an old blog post from Marius (thanks delicious.com/eskimoblood/bezier)
One Main Place is a mixed-use skyscraper hotel and office building at 1201 Main Street in Dallas, Texas. The shadows remind me of a giant shadow box and form interesting patterns. This is two shots, merged with Photoshop. Minimal enhancements: just to bring out detail of the concrete and enhance contrast to highlight the patterns of the shadows.

Brachyhesma species, Australian Minute Bee, specimen collected by xxx in Australia
Long:
Until recently those who worked on the taxonomy of bees, or taxonomy in general for that matter, were men. Culturally that imbalance is now shifting, though we clearly still have a ways to go. Early female taxonomists were not unheard of however, and Australian Elizabeth Exley was a good example having described over 200 species of bees, working even after her retirement just for the joy of it. She described many of the 41 species of Minute Bees.
Minutes Bees are just that, minute, some are as small as 2mm in length and all have a wan yellow base color to the integument of their exoskeleton . They are known to feed on the many species of plants in the Myrtle family in Australia, especially from Eucalyptus where hundreds of individuals can be obtained with a sweep net and an extremely long handle. These bees are a good example of the evolutionary radiation that occurred in the family Colletidae in Australia with bees ranging much larger than a honeybee down to less than 2 mm.

Further in Summer than the Birds
Pathetic from the Grass
A minor Nation celebrates
Its unobtrusive Mass.
No Ordinance be seen
So gradual the Grace
A pensive Custom it becomes
Enlarging Loneliness.
Antiquest felt at Noon
When August burning low
Arise this spectral Canticle
Repose to typify
Remit as yet no Grace
No Furrow on the Glow
Yet a Druidic Difference
Enhances Nature now

Well, according to the Phrontistery dictionary, Pipkins are small pots, and this tangle reminds me of small pots. And, who can resist a title like "Pipkins"? Not me! I hope you find the tangle hard to resist as well!

On euro tour with Sean and Neil for 3 days of mayhem and a grand total of 8 hours sleep. Taking in some old and new sites and showing them some of what is out there as it was their first time. Also made time to meet up with the SPEXS crew.
Abandoned swimming pool with lots of interesting features, the builders are in so material is everywhere but still some shots worth taking.
