From Geyser Hill boardwalk, Yellowstone.

Silica is dissolved from the underlying Rhyolite by the hot, acidic water and precipitates out as it cools at the surface, forming siliceous sinter and making these intriguing patterns.

It was a cold morning, so the stark white around this hydro-thermal feature is hoar frost.

Not sure what the name of this wildflower is. It grows all over our woods and is tiny - about 1 cm across. Always fascinated by the detail of flowers in closeup!

Thanks to everyone who takes the time to view, fave and comment. Really appreciate it when there are so many beautiful photos out there.

This is a close-up photo of the wood grain patterns in the root of a driftwood tree that suggest an impish pareidolia figure.

I always love working with patterns and texture in nature and this fern gave me a great opportunity to do so. The light was soft because it had just rained and it was a fantastic moment to capture some fine details. I didn't hesitate.

This is a relatively large butterfly found throughout Europe, extending into North Africa and Central Asia, and even as far as the islands of Japan. It gets its name from the dark green colouration on the underside of the hindwings, forming part of a decorative pattern which includes pale yellow-brown areas and large white dots.

It flies between June to early September. Inspite of powerful flight it prefers to remain within its breeding area, however. This would explain why, although it is often widespread, it tends to be localised, and more so where there has been habitat loss, making it somewhat scarce in certain regions. Its favoured habitat tends to be flower-rich glasslands, particularly where there is limestone or chalk and a scattering of shrub. It also frequents moors and dunes.

I photographed this butterfly in a woodland clearing in a predominantly limestone area. As I followed it around, luckily it landed on a dog rose.

It is often mistaken for the high brown fritillary, which has an extra row of pearls.
