This is the bottom end of my garden, it was the most difficult area to develop in the past few years. Just about have it right now, more colour to appear yet on the left hand side during the Summer / Autumn.

Lake Baringo is at its highest level since 1964, resulting in widespread flooding. This means the hippos are going further inland to find food. The flood water came right up to our room at the hotel. We couldn't stay at Roberts Camp as our cottage was under 5 feet of water. It meant a great night of hippo watching out of the window of the hotel, but they used the gap between us and the next room as a pathway. It was quite scary going to the restaurant in the evening. It has dramatically changed the scenery since we went there last year. On the second morning we saw a large crocodile just feet from our room as the water level had raised again. You can see how close the tents and buildings are in some of the hippo photos. Just after we left we heard there was a landslide which buried 14 villages. This is a disaster for the area. Tourism is suffering as accommodation is flooded, and the local people are losing their villages. They also can't get to the beehives in the trees in the flooded area, and selling honey is their main source of income.

Once, there was a girl who wandered through crystallized pathways; these pathways were filled with unknown mysteries which reached out to her - some grasped her wrists and pulled her away in different directions. Some pathways seemed to overflow with such grace and she was hypnotized as she turned away to go on her way. Her heart wrenched away, yet she kept walking forward, the ice numbing her feet as she stepped forward. Her eyes grew wide at the sight of haunting magnificence and she fought against the truest will of her heart as she wandered - the icicle crystals growing up all around her, caging her in this distant, troubled place of horrid darkness. Yet, as she walked forward, the ice pricked her arms, leaving her aching and drowning in mistaken decisions. The crushing pain of her shattered chest screamed out at her as if there were windows above her that had fractured into a thousand sharp, yet delicate pieces and fell upon her weak and seemingly hopeless heart.
She longed for a place where such pathways wouldn’t leave her heart scarred -- persuasion and greed left to guide her way through the darkening pathways. The walls of the most transparent and iridescent ice became sturdier as her heart willed itself to remain at a distance from the pathways. Yet, still, the pathways became evermore envious and overflowed with the ferocity of lions.
She grasped at hope with all of her strength as she fought her way through the darkening pathways that attempted to succumb her full force with twisted words of delicate poetry and words of persuasion that called out to her, calling her in. Yet, just as she stepped towards the pathway, she saw the darkness and closely examined her weary and delicate heart. Before time took it’s toll, she stepped backward, her heart beating heavily as she stepped back.
Once, there was a girl who wandered through an icy world, her heart heavy and delicate. She grasps hope with all of her strength, and the heavy walls that stand around her keep her heart safe from the beckoning pathways. Yet, she keeps her eyes open for the truest pathway where darkness is far from touching her frail heart.

Milford & Foster Spencer are pictured here during a gas stove roundup promotion sponsored by Spencer’s Hardware and Rochester Gas & Electric in the early 1930s. The Mobile Gas Company collaborated with local gas and electric companies and provided a way for homeowners to get rid of their old stoves and buy new ones, preferably from local sellers like the Spencers. Although the hardware store collected the stoves, there was no guarantee that homeowners would buy new ones and Milford Spencer’s son, Dana, recalls his father telling him that stocking new gas stoves in the early Depression years put the hardware store in debt. Gas stoves were found in many households by the end of the 1920's. These stoves provided a cleaner way of cooking than coal or wood burning stoves and took up much less space in the kitchen. The gas stove was usually a vertical cylinder made of thin steel with a window, up to four burners and an oven. The flames on the gas stove burners had to be watched closely because if they turned from blue to red and yellow, black smoke would fill the room and leave a greasy residue on everything. Gas stoves were also more expensive to use, which changed the way people heated their kitchens. In the past, coal and wood burning stoves were frequently used to provide heat during the winter; gas stoves could not be used in the same way so, necessity being the mother of invention, many homeowners began installing central heating. Despite some drawbacks, gas stoves were embraced by cooks everywhere for the level of control they offered in cooking.

Artists Lee and Jill Brewster have worked with the local community to develop and exciting artwork for the newly designed Holgate Moor Doorstop Green, which included the development of a new play area and sensory garden. Pathways features five uprights made from European Oak, which vary in height from 1m to 2.5m, creating a unique and contemporary entrance to the park. Each upright is carved with imagery showing the pathways through the different environments in and around the housing estate. This imagery was developed with young people and residents, following on from education workshops and consultation undertaken by the artists, so that it would have a relevance and meaning for the local people.
