This is one of the most impressive settings I've seen in a long time. The crystal palace is modelled after the same sort of structure in Kew Gardens in London but of course much smaller. It's empty though. I suppose they use it for exhibitions but nothing was happening inside while I was there. The jet d'eau is reminiscent of Geneva's but also on a much smaller scale. Nevertheless the peace and tranquility of this setting was awesome.. a nice break from the hectic pace of Madrid's big bustling streets and only minutes away from them all.

in his first solo exhibition in spain, artist petrit halilaj has transformed madrid’s palacio de cristal into a giant nest of massive flowers. the artist has connected the temporary installation with the city’s retiro park by opening windows, setting up structures, and placing feeding areas to attract the birds and other creatures inhabiting or passing through the park. ‘to a raven and the hurricanes which bring back smells of humans in love from unknown places’ is the first show inaugurated by the museo reina sofía since its closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which interrupted the montage of the exhibition.

Palacio de Cristal

The Palacio de Cristal ("Glass Palace") is a conservatory located in Madrid's Buen Retiro Park. It was built in 1887 on the occasion of the Exposition of the Philippines, held in the same year, then a Spanish colonial possession. The architect was Ricardo Velázquez Bosco.

The Palacio de Cristal, in the shape of a Greek cross, is made almost entirely of glass set in an iron framework on a brick base, which is decorated with ceramics. Its cupola makes the structure over 22 metres high. When it was erected, glass and iron construction on a large scale was already to be seen in Madrid at Delicias station (1880), the work of a French architect. However the curved architecture of the Palacio de Cristal is more comparable to the techniques pioneered by the British architects Joseph Paxton (who was responsible for London's Crystal Palace) and Decimus Burton (who was responsible for the Palm House at Kew Gardens).

The cast-iron frame was manufactured in Bilbao.[1] The structure was designed in a way that would allow it to be re-erected on another site (as happened to the equivalent building in London). However, the building has remained on the original site, next to a lake, and has been restored to its original appearance. It is no longer used as a greenhouse, and is currently used for art exhibits.[2]

Miralda’s story begins in Spain in the Sixties during his military service in the universitary militias under Franco’s dictatorship. His drawings of that period, heavily charged with caustic humour, obsessively analyse movements, military tactics and notions of good and evil. Leaping from paper to object, his soldiers — white plastic miniatures — soon invaded all his work: photos, frottages-collages, posters, furniture, cupboards, tables, chairs, walls and the streets of Paris where, from 1962, he lived, when not stationed in army camps. In 1972, he made París. La Cumparsita with Benet Rossell, a film about the adventures of a great soldier searching for his pedestal in the streets and public squares of the city. This is also the period of his Soldats-Soldés (Bargain Soldiers), Dibujos geométricos (Geometric Drawings), Essais d’amélioration (Improvement Essays), Toile de Jouy, his Cenotaphs — those public, tourist monuments to generals — and Cendriers-tombeaux (Ashtray-Tombs).

This rose garden was laid out in 1915 by Cecilio Rodríguez, head gardener for the city, modeled after one in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris. The idea was pushed my the Mayor of Madrid, Carlos Prats. Here at the entrance, a statue of the Marquis of Salamanca was moved; It "disappeared" during the Civil War; The Rosaleda suffered other damage as well.

Another "rosaleda" was created in 1956 in the Parque del Oeste, organized more botanically than for aesthetic purposes as this one had been.

Another statue at the base of the Monument to Alfonso XII built in 1902. For that generation this one must have been pretty risqué... kinda cool though :)

Expected like the Messiah, here is the first planned roll out of my Mamiya, with the the old fashioned (technology) Shanghai GP3 film developed at home in Caffenol (C-H 9 min 21ºC). Some Retiro needed to appear in the 15 frames… Love it!

¡Me encanta!
