Scotland - We were walking along George IV Bridge last Saturday in Edinburgh, looking for some festival mayhem. But we became aware that the roads were closing around us, police and cameras on tripods moved in so we decided to stay put and see what was occurring. The Orange Order Parade burst round a corner and took nearly an hour to pass us, drums banging out a rhythm and pipes setting your toes a-tapping. The Orange Order, named after William of Orange who beat off Catholic claims to the throne in the C17th are more famous in Northern Ireland. But they are also strong in Scotland and actually have chapters all over the UK.

I Am What I Am
I am what I am
I don't want praise, I don't want pity
I bang my own drum
Some think it's noise, I think it's pretty
And so what if I love each sparkle and each bangle
Why not try to see things from a different angle
Your life is a sham
Till you can shout out
I am what I am
I am what I am
And what I am needs no excuses
I deal my own deck
Sometimes the aces sometimes the deuces
It's one life and there's no return and no deposit
One life so it's time to open up your closet
Life's not worth a damn till you can shout out
I am what I am
I am what I am
And what I am needs no excuses
I deal my own deck sometimes the aces sometimes the deuces
It's one life and there's no return and no deposit
One life so it's time to open up your closet
Life's not worth a…

Everybody loves a parade!
This Neo Blythe is Blue Rabbit; the Middies are Pixie Peaceful and Lena Elena, and the Petites are Littlest Pet Shop Blythes.
Let me tell you about the background! It is from Byer’s Choice, a company that makes old-fashioned Christmas dolls (which I don’t like) and their accessories (which I do like) for holiday displays. I don’t know when this Williamsburg background was produced, but I have been seeing it at my local antique mall for several years, marked “Not For Sale”. I checked it every time I went, just in case the vendor had changed their mind; and then one day this summer, when I went to the booth where it was located…there was a second one there, that was for sale! I was almost jumping for joy! These houses actually exist here, in the restored area of Williamsburg, Virginia, and they are decorated for Christmas very much like they are in this picture, and I walk past them frequently, so it’s very cool to have a miniature version for my dolls!
There they were just a-walkin' down the street, singin'
'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do'
Snappin' their fingers and shufflin' their feet, singin'
'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do'
They looked good (Looked good)
They looked fine (Looked fine)
They looked good, they looked fine
And I nearly lost my mind
Well, not exactly. After the Military Color Guard rounds the field, the pipe and drum corps from the combined bands lead the Parade of Tartans at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. The tune is Scotland the Brave, an unofficial anthem to Scotland, to spur on the many Scottish clans on the march behind them. Did you know that bagpipes are considered as instruments of war? The shrill of bagpipes struck terror in the hearts of the enemy, or so many Scottish combatants thought. During the Battle of Culloden (a Jacobite rising against the British government), Scottish pipers marched into battle bravely inspiring the troops. Soon, every battle had its line of pipers, to the point that the Highland Regiment wouldn’t go to battle without pipe music. As I stated on my last post of the games (from my perspective of not being Scottish), “My DNA can tolerate bagpipes for only so long, but to be honest, when upwards of 100 pipers are all dialed in at once, it is beyond impressive.” These folks would be an extraordinary line at any battle. Just so, I can understand why they march as they play… so they can get away from the noise. Ha!
The Liverpool Carnival Company’s seventh Samba Carnival Parade swept through the streets of Liverpool city centre yesterday evening . Since its inception in 2008, the parade has seen thousands of international samba performers from countries such as Brazil, Singapore, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Ireland and from all over the UK descend upon the city to take part in the UK’s biggest samba carnival.
Day 24
National Hot Dog Day - what better way to celebrate then join in on a local parade :D
Mustards hot dog shop on the move
Lion puppet at the Lantern Parade Chester Zoo - managed to get away staying in a hotel and then that evening the Government announced the introduction of a new lockdown Tier - so we had a socially distanced walk with our granddaughters (and daughter and son-in-law) before whizzing back to London.
And then last night I got a ping from the Track&Trace app to say I had been in contact with someone with Covid and that I have to isolate for 10 days. The only place I have been since then has been Lidl!
