“Meg gawked. “He—he really is a centaur.”

“Well spotted,” I said. “I suppose the lower body of a horse is what gave him away?”

She punched me in the arm.”

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mummers_Parade

The Philadelphia Mummers Parade is the oldest continuous folk parade in the United States. The first formal, city-sponsored parade dates to 1901. But Mummery in Philadelphia began long before that. Mummers can be found throughout recorded history in ancient Egypt, in Greece, in Europe and elsewhere in the world.Local clubs (usually called "New Years Associations") compete in one of four categories (comics, fancies, string bands, and fancy brigades). They prepare elaborate costumes, performance routines, and moveable scenery, which take months to complete. This is done in clubhouses

From the Nobbies you can take the road less travelled along the cliffs in a loop along to a point where you can view the famous Penguin Parade. No Penguins were seen as they come ashore in the evening, head to their burrows to feed their chicks and leave early morning to go fishing again. But in the evening, as sunshine leaves, this area is lit up carefully and hundreds of Little Penguins come hoping and waddling ashore watched by hundreds of awed people. The area is carefully managed and Phillip Island has had a massive program of culling Foxes and other introduced predators to ensure the Penguins are left alone. If you haven't been to the evening show it is well worth it. www.penguins.org.au/attractions/penguin-parade/. HFF

Fiesta Moros y Cristianos 2016/2017

Presidenta: Isabel Flores Torres.

2º ALJAMA MUDEJAR

Presidente: Emilio Egea Gea.

St. Patrick's Day Parade 2022 Dubin

I wasn’t sure what I was going to post today. There is a file of finished images ready for posting so I pick and choose depending on what hits me on a particular day or if I have something to write about.

As soon as I scrolled past this one of Mennonites driving by power lines on the way home from church I thought it was appropriate to today. During the last 18 hours we’ve been without internet, cable or wifi in this area. For people who have to work via the internet it can be a disaster. Not so much for me, in spite of the fact it feels like I’ve lost a functioning lung. I just worked on more pictures since the editing queue is about a mile long.

So when I think of Old Order Mennonites who live without a number of modern ammenities I have to admit I’m impressed. At least I think I am.

When I’ve read about their customs it seems Mennonites who practice their life according to the old order not only do not have cars but often don’t have electricity or if they do they’re limited as to what types of things it can be used for. They are generally allowed to have one telephone now but they definitely do not have computers or television.

What I do find impressive is the idea of life without the distractions of the ‘screen’. For different people it could mean different things—more books read, more physical work accomplished, more face-to-face socializing and other things I’m sure.

On the other hand, it can be isolating to be cut off from communications and also insular in terms of thought and opinion. We presently have the world of education available to us without even having to dig through ancient tomes at a physical library or we can read obscure papers from regions all around the world.

No question that there are plenty of negatives attached to the internet but there certainly are massive positives as well.

Does the lifestyle work for Old Order Mennonites? Clearly, it does for many. Others leave the order when they become adults to join the ‘modern’ world. Meanwhile, I continue to photograph their comings and goings when I can.
