Jumping back to the summer now, and some photos from Southsea. South Parade Pier opened, after being closed for a few years, and we enjoyed walking back down to the end, where we found this roundabout! Here's JJ in action taking one of his tea shots!
Our poor old pier, rusting away into the sea! If only someone would care for it properly like they do in Brighton and Eastbourne!
At the beginning of November the Pier was completely closed and fenced off by Portsmouth City Council as it was a danger to the Public. A couple of days later, the council let the only the front of the pier open. These included part of the arcade and other bits which are actually on land.
In December 2012 an attempt to sell the pier at auction failed.

I zoomed in a little more while looking down over the wall at the Parade Gardens. Here you can see a bit more of the Empire, which was built as a hotel, but now contains apartments.

It's in a fabulously central position, overlooking these gardens, Pulteney Bridge and the River Avon.

The lower end of the Parade, which has a graceful curve. The semicircular balcony is modern but welldone apart from its rather mean columns. It was 'modernised' in the 1990s (I think) when it became a small shopping mall on four floors around a central atrium, with a café on the first floor that spilled over on to the balcony. Somehow it was never very successfu and has since been turned into a Premier Inn, with a Co-op on the ground floor.
Visitors to the town (particularly those who were not very mobile) could avail themselves of a horse-drawn tram to take them up and down the Parade. Apparently the three-mile journey (a good deal further than the Parade itself) took about 40 minutes. In 1905 the horse-drawn trams were replaced with electric ones, requiring tramlines and overhead cables, but the service was fairly short lived, ending in the 1930s with the growth of car ownership. Some of the central light columns originally held the overhead cables - like the one here.
