This was sketched from a drawing I found and modified to look like Leigh Brook at the Knapp & Papermill nature reserve in Worcestershire.

What a great time Joe (wnywaterfallers), Christy (Savage Gardener) I had here exploring Papermill Falls on the Silver Lake Outlet in Letchworth SP yesterday! There they are in action. This is a most unusual waterfall or waterfalls. This is the top part, then off to (your) left here is a dynamic chute. Below this long flat platform is another wide section which can be seen here on the right.

Some pictures would seem to indicate that it wouldn't be too hard to climb down the far side of the bottom waterfall, but when you're there you'd quickly decide to take the approved route which entails going back up to the top, walking down Trail 19, bushwacking a bit to the creek, then walking maybe .3 miles in the creek to the base of the larger falls.

The Snow Family. I am first in line on the left. Directly to the right of me is Jessica Lee Goldyn who has gone on to star in Broadway's current revival of "A Chorus Line." Papermill Playhouse is one of the best regional theatre's in the world. I am blessed to have worked there.

A photo of the fast flowing weirs at Papermill Lock in Chelmsford on a dull, overcast day.

Uploaded on behalf of Robert Dickinson by www.ukplus.co.uk/uk/photos/competition as an entry to their current photo competition.

I had a bad feeling in my stomach when I took these pictures I just kept swearing but I knew inside that what was going to happen all the time was now coming to be and I felt sad.

Sadly long gone the bridge is still there

Hello John,

What a magnificent photograph of this reciprocating steam engine in use at Stoneywood Mill. It must have been taken in the early 1900's. I don't know the maufacturer of the engine. The workings of all these horizontal steam engines were similar. The piston and cylinder casing is seen at the front of the photo. The piston in the cylinder was attached to a connecting rod which in turn was connected to the crank. The piston in the cylinder pushed and pulled the connecting rod backwards and forwards. thus causing the main shaft and wheels to rotate.

The centrifugal governor is seen sited between the piston casing and large wheels.

The motion of the engine rotating caused a system of weights to be forced out by the centrifugal force. These weights were also drawn in by the force of gravity, or springs.

When the weights were moving outwards they shut off steam, and when moving inwards they allowed more steam in.

This action kept the engine running at a constant speed.

All clever stuff.

John.

The railroad and the pulp and paper mill

Swelled by continuing rains, Paper Mill Falls in South Avon was hardly recognizable.

A more normal flow can be seen below.

I forgot that this existed! this took stuff up to the canteen.
