Shortening the distance to guarantee a better focus. From the hold of the ship Aquarius off the coast of Libya to the Balkan migration routes. reporting side by side with those who drown and those who are born, with those who are caught or bounce back. Challenging rhetoric, naivety and rubber-stamped abstractions along the way.

It shed a light on the great work happening on a local level and introduced people to each other and designers in central government. It was a day for, with and by designers in local government.

The event was supported by Birmingham City Council and jointly organised by the Government Digital Service’s National and UCD Communities teams.

In June 2016, the storm of hacked emails, released by WikiLeaks, hit the US elections. The diffusion and the suspicion that the Democratic National Committee – the governing body of the Democratic Party – had favored the primary candidate Hilary Clinton led to the resignation of its president, Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Has Russia been really the deus ex machina of the operation, as stated by the joint report of the CIA, NSA and FBI? Who is Guccifer 2.0, the so-called Romanian hacker who claimed responsibility for the hacking? Did Wikileaks effectively deliver a piece of the White House to Donald Trump, working in only one direction to damage the Democratic Party, or has it lived up to its ideals?

According to Edelman’s Trust Barometer, the world of business is “the last retaining wall” to stop the emergence of a post-truth and fake-news world. This is due to the fact that, according to the study, people place greater trust in news produced by companies than in news offered by the media. Companies know that lying is bad for business and that the digital era has transformed them into “news companies.” Is news increasingly becoming corporate? What are the risks and prospects for readers and what are the responsibilities for companies and journalists?

Electionland was a unique collaborative project to track and cover voting problems during the 2016 US elections across the whole country and in real-time. It was also the largest social newsgathering effort ever undertaken with more than 600 people monitoring for any instances of voter suppression and more than 400 journalists chasing down the stories in the field. The need to cover the vote was particularly urgent as states passed laws that could affect citizens’ access to the ballot box, and one of the presidential candidates cast doubt on the validity of the entire system. In this session those responsible for key parts of this ambitious project will tell you how we did it, where the biggest challenges lay and how it all played out on the day.

On Tuesday, January 6, 2015, Mayor Ras J. Baraka and other dignitaries hosted the City of Newark’s first “Young Men of Color and Law Enforcement” forum as part of President Obama’s nationwide “My Brother’s Keeper Challenge,” at Central High School.

The forum was designed to address issues that damage the relationship between African-American and Latino youth and law enforcement. Among the subjects that were discussed were steps to improve education, reduce crime, enhance mentoring, and to engage youth in both their own lives and Newark’s development. Among the panelists was Eric Garner, Jr.
