Thrush-sized bird; pale gray overall with black mask. Breeds in open forests and shrubby areas across Europe; moves south in winter. Found in open areas with prominent perches, including power lines and short treetops that offer perfect vantages for shrikes to spot their prey. Carnivorous habits make shrikes unique among passerines. In flight, watch for white patches in the wings. Feeds on rodents and small birds.
The thorny bush is perfect for a shrike. It uses the thorns to impale its prey, since its feet and bill are not strong enough to handle live prey (gruesome but true).

As the common name of Pale-naped Brushfinch suggests, it was once placed in the Finches family (Fringillidae), however it is now considered to belong to the New World Sparrows. This is a berry-eating species, found at higher elevations. This individual was seen near Parque Nacional Chingaza east of Bogota, Colombia, South America.
OK, I admit it. I got the wrong theme. Somewhere between checking out what this weeks theme was (Pale) and taking the shot over the weekend my head mangled it to Plain. So I got some plain paper, made a nice origami boat and hey presto the shot was born. Problem came when I checked again on the theme. Pale. Close enough I hope!
HMM! Theme: Pale
