Painted Bunting for the win! Went out for a morning walk. Not really expecting much today. Suddenly saw a small bird with a flash of red. Didn't really realize what it was until I finally got a good view. Definitely made the morning walk worthwhile.

...searched the house high and low for something interesting to choose for this week's theme and found a mug that was hand painted by my son when he was about 6 or 7. Quite abstract but I can see a face in the splatters
I like how even the reflections and smudges make the window panes look painted too.
Brought to you from last week's stay in Nelson, BC. What a great city and very scenic surrounding area.

I am blessed. My house back onto natural bush land. So today in he misty rain I venture down the back to see what is around and I spot this fellow. Not sure of what it was but was able to sneak up to within 5m and get a few shots off. My first time sighting and photographing one of these.
This little male bunting is singing his morning song. It's summer and the buntings are not singing as much. Grass seeds are maturing and they are feeding on the ground a lot. Almost impossible to see in grass because they are so small. Our beautiful world, pass it on.

A detail of the Painted Hills unit of John Day Fossils Beds located in Wheeler County, Oregon. The colorful bands and striations in the clay rich hills were formed when this area was an ancient river flood plane and correspond to various geological eras. Thanks for the views and happy Friday!
This was taken on a prairie grass trail at a local provincial park. I was hoping to find Clearwing Moths on this trail, but instead found my first Painted Lady of the year and several others, plus several Viceroys (FOY) and a few Monarchs.

An area of Badlands across northern Arizona, the painted desert is one of the driest parts of Arizona - except for the day I was there of course.
It was very windy and heavily overcast for most of the afternoon, with some rain arriving late. Despite that, it's still an amazing place and extremely colourful even without the additional sunlight.
This was taken in the Petrified Forest National Park in October 2015.
In late summer, the buntings change their habits. A couple of things influence their behavior: the summer heat and grass seeds maturing, providing an additional food source from the insects they've been feeding on.
These birds are small and can virtually disappear in the grass or the oak leaves that fill the Cross Timbers. I shot this bird at 7:30 a.m.; right now, by 9:00 or so, they have fed, sung a little bit to mark their territory, and retired to the shade of the oaks. The easier shots of the day are gone. The whitetails respond similarly to the late summer heat. I almost never see a mature buck now; they are mostly nocturnal.
