What can go wrong?

Kneel down paddleboarders are called KNUP’ers.

Hamilton Island, Australia (Monday 3 Sep 2018)

Just when you think you've seen every kind of paddleboarder, young, old, dogs, yoga classes, along comes someone different. This is a couple we saw from the pier at Avila Beach.

Eva leads a good life. Here she is on the paddle board with my wife. She's still learning so her trips are quite short, but her balance is excellent and she is even able to jump onto the board from the dock without tipping the whole apple cart. Helps that she's less than 30 pounds.

This was a repeat photo shoot, and I have to thank my lovely wife for her patience. The day before I sent Eva out with her while I laid on the dock with my 70-200 lens and grabbed some pictures. Unfortunately, I had my metering wrong so there was almost no detail visible in Eva's face. The next morning my wife went out for a long paddle board (8km), and returned to find me waiting on the dock with Eva and the camera. She was a good sport about it and went out to do several more passes so I could get this shot with better exposure. It also happened that the light was really cool on our repeat photo session. Winds had changed blowing smoke down from some fires in the norther part of the province, giving everything a slightly foggy look and orange glow.

We've had our cabin at Emma lake for three years now. During our first season paddle boards were quite rare. The next season Costco started to sell them so they became ubiquitous. During that first season I was out for a paddle and stopped to speak with a couple who were also on boards. We spoke about how few there were on the lake, when the husband said to me "We don't see many, but there's this crazy lady who paddles with a huge orange dog. Have you seen her?" I replied "Yes, I've seen her". I didn't add that the lady is my wife and the dog was our golden retriever Ollie who loved the board so much he would cry from the deck when Karen left for a ride, the swim out to the board when she returned. There were a few falls their first few trips, especially when he decided it was time for a good shake. It could also be a problem when he went to the front of the board and submerged the tip while moving at speed, bringing the board to sudden stops with resulting dramatic water entries. But, he eventually got the hand of it and loved to go out with Karen, including when he only had three legs from cancer.

Eva still wears a lead on the board as she is a novice and we need the extra length to grab her if she were to make a sudden exit. The only issue this ride was when a family of geese showed up on the lake about 30 yards away getting Eva's full attention. Fortunately, she stayed on the board and left the geese to swim on their own.

Standup paddleboarding (SUP) is a water sport born from surfing with modern roots in Hawaii. Stand up paddleboarders stand on boards that are floating on the water, and use a paddle to propel themselves through the water. The sport was documented in a 2013 report that identified it as the outdoor sporting activity with the most first-time participants in the United States that year. Variations include flat water paddling, racing, surfing, whitewater SUP, yoga, and fishing.

Paddleboarding is usually performed in the open ocean, with the participant paddling and surfing unbroken swells to cross between islands or journey from one coastal area to another.

These giant cruise ships had parked up at Weymouth Bay. With cruises not an option durin 2020, the ships that would normally take thousands of people around the world had to go somewhere. They began arriving in July 2020 and were floating on the outskirts of Weymouth Bay. According to CruiseMapper, the ships onlookers could see are the Britannia, Queen Elizabeth, and Aurora which are operated by P&O and Cunard. Between them, they can house over 9000 guests, not to mention a huge crew. The bay offers plenty of protection from changing weather and is the perfect spot for an extended stay.

The cruise ships are a pretty incredible sight, even from the shore. They break up the otherwise unimpeded skyline in an impressive manner and are a nice change from the tankers and cargo ships occasionally visible from the Weymouth and Portland coast.

The ship on the left is the MS Azura which is a cruise ship operated by P&O Cruises and owned by Carnival plc. The ship was built by Fincantieri at their shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy. She officially entered service with the company in April 2010 and was named by Darcey Bussell.

Azura is the only Grand-class ship to feature a "Duck Tail" stern.

The ship on the right is the Carnival Valor which is a post-Panamax Conquest-class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line. The vessel was built by Fincantieri at its Monfalcone shipyard in Friuli-Venezia Giulia (northern Italy). She was floated out on March 27, 2004, and christened by American journalist Katie Couric in Miami on December 17, 2004.

The 952-foot vessel can hold up to 1,180 crew members and 2,974 guests. The ship's homeport is New Orleans, Louisiana.

The ship in front of the Carnival Valor THV Galatea which is a lighthouse tender operated by Trinity House, the body responsible for the operation of lighthouses and marine navigation aids around the coasts of England, Wales and the Channel Islands.

THV Galatea was launched in July 2006, replacing the THV Mermaid, in service with Trinity House since 1987. Mermaid was sold to the Gardline group of Great Yarmouth, for conversion to survey vessel. Galatea is a sister vessel to the NLV Pharos. The Queen and Prince Philip visited the Pool of London on 17 October 2007 for the naming of Galatea, moored alongside HMS Belfast.

Walking along a very sunny, warm Union Canal yesterday with chum and his hounds, spotted this bloke on a paddleboard. I've seen folks using them on the Forth and the Almond rivers along the coast, but first time I have seen someone using one on the canal, snapped a few pics as he passed us, then pulled over to let an oncoming barge pass him

Paddle Boarder, Vancouver. Given the distance this guy paddle boarded, it was no wonder he took a break to simply take in all the beauty of Vancouver's North Shore. On his way back, I was astonished at his speed. No sooner had I taken the photo of him in front of the tanker (with the houses of West Vancouver in the background) when he was already "midship" and then past it!

The haze in these shots is due to the smoke from BC's wildfires drifting down to the coast. Still occurring as late as today, a day after "Fire Season" officially ended despite 153 active fires still burning in the province at a "mere" cost of $510 Million (and counting). And 65,000 residents evacuated over the summer. And still I see drivers carelessly tossing cigarettes out their vehicles.

Perhaps they need to spend some time paddle boarding out on the ocean taking in these grand views to appreciate the preciousness of the Nature which sustains us!
