After the day started a bit cold (okay, rather frosty), he put in a lot of effort the rest of the day to make me feel comfortable here in Hamburg.
Twelve hours and what feels like a 20 km walk (and at least 50 photos) later, I'm back at the Landungsbrücken and thus ending my tour.
I am going back tomorrow. I give myself the sunrise. I have enough good pictures with me to allow myself to sleep in tomorrow morning.
Nachdem der Tag etwas unterkühlt (ok eher frostig) gestartet ist, hat er sich den Rest des Tages doch ziemlich Mühe gegeben, damit ich mich hier in Hamburg wohl fühle.
Zwölf Stunden und gefühlt 20 km Fußmarsch (und mindestens 50 Fotos) später stehe ich nun wieder an den Landungsbrücken und beende damit meine Tour.
Morgen gehts wieder zurück. Den Sonnenaufgang schenke ich mir. Ich hab ausreichend gute Bilder dabei um morgen früh ausschlafen zu dürfen.

Not often I am stumped for words, yet here we are.

Why did I have to take most of it off just because I put this skin on?

For no less than 35 years, Marshal Tito was the face of Yugoslavia. He moved on the stage of world politics with bravado: he opposed the almighty Soviet Union, his Tito-ism formed the ideal buffer against Stalinsm for the West. In short, Tito put Yugoslavia on the world map. More importantly, Tito has managed to maintain stability in Yugoslavia all these years. How did he manage to keep those very strong nationalistic feelings in check all these years? Tito just said: Don't whine, shut up. Most importantly, Tito, with a sophisticated strategy, made sure that no people felt like a minority. No one is better or more valuable than another. As the leader of his partisan army, which consisted of different population groups, he was the only one who really stood above the parties. Especially in the early years of his reign unsavory things happened. Indeed. People who opposed him during the war or shortly afterwards have been disabled. Thousands of people have been murdered and beaten to death. The problem with dictators, and Tito was of course a dictator, is that they don't have suitable successors. No one can and should stand in their shadow, so when such a ruler dies, power falls into the hands of all kinds of incapable figures. After Tito's death in 1980, Yugoslavia is rapidly declining. The increasingly poor relations between the different population groups eventually culminate in a civil war. You can still find slogans of Tito at the most southern point of Croatia, at the abandoned Prevlaka Fortress: Tito - leads our way - to je naš put.. On the road to Prevlaka Fortress we pass beautiful Italian cypress trees.
Prevlaka is a peninsula at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor - Montenegro. It is the southernmost point in Croatia. There is a neglected fortress from 1870. It was bombed in 1943 and this is still clearly visible. There are plans for restoration. The reserve is totally overgrown, but nature is breathtaking. There is a beautiful view from the terrace. Prevlaka's strategic location and proximity to a naval base have led Prevlaka to several quarrels between Croatia and Yugoslavia. In the early 1990s, during the Croatian War of Independence, Yugoslavia occupied the peninsula. In 1996, the two countries agreed to demilitarize it, and UN observers came to monitor it. Recognized as a territory of Croatia in 2006. Worth a visit if you like abandoned ancient ruins. On the road past beautiful Italian cypress trees to the most southern point of Croatia.

De steeds slechtere verhoudingen tussen de verschillende bevolkingsgroepen culmineren uiteindelijk in een burgeroorlog. Er zijn vandaag de dag nog steeds slogan's te vinden van Tito, zo ook bij het verlaten Prevlaka Fortress Tito lijdt ons de weg - Tito - to je naš put.. Prevlaka is een schiereiland bij de ingang van de baai van Kotor - Montenegro. Het is het meest zuidelijke punt van Kroatië. Er is een verwaarloosd fort uit 1870. Er zijn plannen voor restauratie. Het reservaat is totaal overwoekerd, maar de natuur is adembenemend. Vanaf het terras is er een prachtig uitzicht. In het begin van de jaren negentig, tijdens de Kroatische Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog, bezette Joegoslavië het schiereiland. In 1996 kwamen de twee landen overeen om het te demilitariseren, en VN-waarnemers kwamen het volgen. Erkend als een grondgebied van Kroatië in 2006. Een bezoek waard als je van verlaten oude ruïnes houdt. Op weg langs prachtige Italiaanse cipressen naar het meest zuidelijke punt van Kroatië.
This plane was built with ores that came from the earth. Slowly the smelted metals are breaking down and being re-absorbed into Mother Earth. 73 years it has survived here, so far. The white shiny metals in the background are mostly as shiny, almost mirror like, as the day they were made, the rest is breaking down just like rusting is dissolving into grains as you can see bottom left of the picture.
There are parts big and small scattered over a large area. The remaining big chunks are the undercarriage and the engines. But there are sections of 'skin' metal I found hundreds of yards to the north. They might have been carried by souvenir hunters, and put down when they got fed up carrying them, but those I saw I suspected were blown there by the wild winds that I'm sure will frequently blast the top of Bleaklow. AMTK/NCDOT Piedmont train 76 passes the signal at CP Capitol on their way back to the storage yard. An F59PH, a model rapidly disappearing from North American commuter ops, brings up the rear.
Construction crews put the finishing touches on the enlarged Belden Hill tunnel at Tunnel NY in this 19 October 1986 view. Boston & Maine SD39 No. 690 (ex-IT) and D&H U33C No. 662 have just pushed the loaded coal train to the summit, and now repose while they are cut off and the train makes an air test before resuming its journey up the D&H mainline.
Normally, I would have put this in the category of seeds, a subject that I tacked two years ago. But this is a collection of seed pods, a collection I made today. And no seeds? Why? Well, the seeds from the three trees represented hereare exceedingly small, no bigger than a dot on a table I was working on or a period on a piece of paper.
In this collection, there are four stages of the liquidambar tree. Those would be the seed pods with hooks. Even today, these pods are in green, the newest, tan, and almost black. The black are the oldest. The average liquidambar will produce thousands of seed pods, and they will hold thousands of seed. Finally, I gathered together foour samples.
The fifth seed pod which is actually a fruit within the pod is from a Piuteria torta, is a species of tree native to Central and South America. It is found largely in the Brazilian cerrado and is commonly called guapeva and grão-de-galo. This tree is a mystery to me. It should be in with the liquidambars, but I see no difference in the 18 trees we have in the grove I used for this. Any suggestions?
56118 puts on a display that is characteristic of a Class 56 that's been sat idling for a number of minutes/hours!
The Large Logo Grid has just departed from Blyth Power Station and made its way around the curve to Freeman's Level Crossing (trust me it is there somewhere!) before the power has been applied as 56118 sets off to collect another load of coal. The driver can be seen looking back to see the rear of his train....good luck with that!
I wonder if the signalman at Freeman's was supplied with a gas mask!?

I actually put my camera on a tripod today (October 23, 2005) and shot some deep dof shots at about 3- or 4-second shutter speeds. I think I had the 70-300 on for this one. Check EXIF data. Obviously the pond was VERY calm. Schoepfle Garden, 23 October 2005.
Oops: Just noticed the data didn't upload on this: How about 300 telephoto, f22 at 3 seconds. I used the aperture-priority program, closed down all the way and let the camera select the right shutter speed. Also used the timer function to release the shutter.

Change WL to night
I put out lots of high-calorie food for the birds to help them keep warm but this Yellow-rumped Warbler went for a cold-stunned insect instead. The Houston area received more snow this morning than we've seen since 1970. There was about three inches in my back yard, more in the drifts.
NB: Most of the shots I took today are a bit soft because I was shooting through a double-pane window. I'm claiming it was to preserve my camera battery from the cold.

The other day our historical society put on 125 years since the first train arrived in Charlevoix. All sorts of festivities went on at the Depot.
This week, we finally put up a sunsail that I had bought to use as a cat hammock! It is triangular; we tied it between 3 trees. I can see that it will sag rapidly so we are going to have to tighten it up! Some of the cats were interested, and some- just suspicious or ignored it! ALL that work! But Tinker, Al, and Mac did find it pretty cool!
I can see that all our big climb-on toys we have in the yard for the cats really need scrubbing! Spring work in the yard is never done.
Al and Tinker really shared a lot of fun in the yard with the new "hammock!"
