This little girl's popo (grandmother) seemed pretty proud of her. She tried to get her to smile, to say "hello" and "nihao", but the little girl wasn't budging. Thankfully, she did let me take her picture. Ditan Park, March 23, 2007.

I am assuming that this is the grandfather - he is obviously very proud of the little boy and was eager for me to take his photograph.

In the background, food is being prepared for the wedding celebrations that are just starting in the building across the road.

The Ming Tombs are situated some 50km north of Beijing at Chang Ling and consist of a set of buildings covering the burial site of 13 emperors, the best known being that of Emperor Yongle who first chose this site (guided by feng shui) after having moved the Chinese capital from Nanjing to Beijing in the early 15th century.

The tombs are first approached through the Sacred or Spirit Way, an avenue of impressive collossal statues of guardian animals (lions, xiezhis (lion-like unicorn beast), camels, elephants, qilins (dragon-like beast) and horses) arranged in seated and standing pairs, followed by a sequence of palace dignitaries at the far end. At the entrance is a monumental archway containing a huge tortoise sculpture bearing a dedicatory stele on it's back.

Proud by Michael Healey

“Funny and foul-mouthed, yet surprisingly sweet.” Globe & Mail

“Dazzlingly witty, surgically precise and scathingly satirical.” Toronto Star

Award-winning playwright Michael Healey (The Drawer Boy) takes on his biggest subject yet: The Right Honourable Stephen Harper. His sexy, cheeky and surprising play will have you rolling in the aisles – regardless of your politics. You may even find yourself liking the man! Proud imagines a different outcome to the last Federal election – the Tories took Quebec and won a huge majority. A young, attractive and very inexperienced MP provides the Prime Minister with a new tool in his arsenal. Unfortunately for him – she may be the smartest man in the room!

The Princeton Public Library and Labyrinth proudly presented National Book Award Finalist Min Jin Lee on April 18, 2018 as part of the "Migrations: A Community Collaboration" series. Min Jin Lee read from and talked about her celebrated novel Pachinko, a saga about four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family’s fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan, exiled from a home they never knew.

Richly told and profoundly moving, Pachinko is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty. From bustling street markets to the halls of Japan’s finest universities to the pachinko parlors of the criminal underworld, Lee’s complex and passionate characters-strong, stubborn women, devoted sisters and sons, fathers shaken by moral crisis-survive and thrive against the indifferent arc of history.

Grandpa watching proudly as his granddaughter plays her heart out in the final tournament of the year

This was taken on rememberance day at the Cenotaph in Central London, one of my faves!

As a child every St. Patrick's Day our parents proudly wore springs of shamrock and bought each of their children a St. Patrick's Day badge which we wore along with the shamrock daddy pinned to our clothes. It was tradition.

Buying shamrock in Dublin came neigh to impossible along with finding St. Parick's Day badges. I ended up the last few years buying GOAL badges in the shape of a shamrock. So good came out of my need for tradition, but it never felt quite the same.

We moved to the midlands last year and so this year I had the opportunity to go west and see the St. Patrick's Day parade in Galway. I stopped off at my local filling station and they had shamrock and badges for sale. I was transported! Buying both I proudly pinned them on and thought of my folks.

In Galway I noticed so many people proudly sporting shamrock, on shirts, jumpers, coats and caps.

I heard Hail Glorious St. Patrick being sung and my day for tradition was made.

Some traditions are too important to be allowed fade out.

HAIL, GLORIOUS ST. PATRICK (words: Sister Agnes / tune: ancient Irish melody, 1920)

Hail, glorious St. Patrick, dear saint of our isle,

On us thy poor children bestow a sweet smile;

And now thou art high in the mansions above,

On Erin's green valleys look down in thy love.

(optional repeat)

On Erin's green valleys, on Erin's green valleys,

On Erin's green valleys look down in thy love.

Hail, glorious St. Patrick, thy words were once strong

Against Satan's wiles and a heretic throng;

Not less is thy might where in Heaven thou art;

Oh, come to our aid, in our battle take part!

In a war against sin, in the fight for the faith,

Dear Saint, may thy children resist to the death;

May their strength be in meekness, in penance, and prayer,

Their banner the Cross, which they glory to bear.

Thy people, now exiles on many a shore,

Shall love and revere thee till time be no more;

And the fire thou hast kindled shall ever burn bright,

Its warmth undiminished, undying its light.

Ever bless and defend the sweet land of our birth,

Where the shamrock still blooms as when thou wert on earth,

And our hearts shall yet burn, wherever we roam,

For God and St. Patrick, and our native home.
