One explanation for why females favour long tails in male long-tailed widowbirds is that the expanded tail enlarges the lateral surface area of the male by 2–3 times, making him much more visible from far distances over open grassland. However, this is most likely not the whole explanation, especially considering that prior to mating, females spend a great deal of time comparing males and, thus, do not rely on sighting them from a distance. As of this time, the exact function of epaulette in male long-tailed widowbirds is unknown. However, its use does resemble that of the red-winged blackbird, being displayed during courtship and threat displays. Thus, the two most conspicuous ornaments of the male birds in the two species may be favoured by different forms of sexual selection: the tail of the long-tailed widowbird by female choice and the brightly coloured epaulettes of the long-tailed widowbird and red-winged blackbird by male contest competition.

Look what came in the mail today!!!

I had to stop & share my excitement after reading thru page 29, savoring every word and image, every tip and turn of the page!

I love how the book is laid out, by medium, with pages of portraits of the same subject by different artists, interspersed within. It's amazing to recognize the artists from both sides of the equation & thrilling to encounter many "new" works I missed in their original posting to the group.

This was a massive undertaking on Julia's part & with every turn of the page, I'm in awe of her selections. The pages reveal, both visually and thru short descriptions, the breadth, scope & international reach of Julia Kay's Portrait Party! I'm extremely proud & honored to be a part of this community and one of the featured artists in this book.

Bravo Julia & special thanks to Anna, for bringing this publication to fruition!

It's only Advent. It's not Christmas yet. But I've already gotten one of the best gifts ever, this original painting by my nephew London. So proud of him. It's a picture of him and me out for a walk.

Eli received his first trophy ever today! He completed his first soccer season. What excitement for a 3 year old.

After the rain @ Nxai Pan, Botswana.

This was taken in real bad conditions. I used 300 mm lens + 2.0 converter = 600mm, ISO1600, shortest stop @ f5.6 and 1/160sec, beanbag leaned on ceiling of open vehicle.

In original size the shot is a bit noisy, but on these conditions, I am very pleased of the result.

Hey gang! It's been a while since I've posted anything. Here's a little image I recently put together for Issue 56 of Blocks Magazine where I take us on a trip to The Darkside as I delve into my process for photographing this and overcoming some of the challenges for taking a dark photo, of dark LEGO in a dark setting. Check out the magazine for more details.
