I found this clover pressed between the pages of a herbal book. Dried and winkled, it had been there for decades.

"Non-native and invasive exotic species are quickly becoming one of the largest threats to biodiversity in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in New York State." - Audubon

But what can we do about it? Over 470 people from all over New England - from biologists to USDA officials to non-profit volunteers - gathered yesterday to discuss that exact topic with an emphasis on early detection and education. The 8th Annual CIPWG (Connecticut Invasive Plants Working Groups) Symposium with a theme of "Invasive Plants in Our Changing World - Learn from the Past, Prepare for the Future" took place at University of Connecticut in Storrs on Tuesday, October 11. The conference drew a multitude of attendees and expert speakers not only from the Nutmeg State but also from New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maryland, Washington, D. C. and more. In a full day of panels and break-out sessions, they shared current environmental data on some of the most worrisome species (like hydrilla and Japanese barberry) plus best management practices. Educators offered strategies for identifying and mapping emerging threats (like waterwheel and wavyleaf basketgrass) through GPS technology. Panelists also described their experiences in rescuing places from monocultures (of Japanese knotweed and purple loosestrife) and replanting with natives to improve diversity of birds, insects and amphibians. Throughout the day, attendees had access to poster presentations on proper invasive species disposal and treatments (examples were given for mugwort, Mile-a-minute and phragmites) as well as pressed specimens and table displays of live plants (bittersweet, wineberry, Eurasian milfoil, water-chestnut etc).

There were many take-aways - from sobering statistics (defunding of positions for education; charted increases of aquatic invasives in lakes) to stories about successful habitat assessments and remediations. Highlights included talks by: William Hyatt, Bureau Chief of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP); Hyatt detailed the possible impacts of HR 5650, the bipartisan Recovering America's Wildlife Act which if approved by Congress would provide monies to conserve habitat, and logically include funds to control invasive species. Karl Wagener, Executive Director of the Connecticut Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) reminded the audience of the impact of energy sprawl on natural resources - the building of solar and wind farms often provides a new route for invasive species when roads are constructed and degrade the landscape. A keynote presentation by Jill Swearingen, Invasive Species Coordinator for the National Park Service at the Center for Urban Ecology in Washington D. C. and co-creator of the Invasive Plant Atlas of the Unites States had everyone looking at the big screen and the small screens on their phones; she walked listeners through EDDMaps, a smartphone app for real time tracking of invasive species occurrences. www.eddmaps.org/

JHC members attended the conference together with other members of the Lower Hudson PRISM (Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management) including Linda Rohleder (NY/NJ Trails Conference, Director of Land Stewardship), Heather Darley and Karalyn Lamb (Saw Mill River Audubon, Board Member).

I was tagged. By Jodi, Teena, and Steffen. This was the fifth image in the fifth folder of my photos folder. If the pictures suck, I throw them away, which explains why this doesn't suck too bad.

I had my pre-surgery appointment on Monday. I learned I will need 24/7 care for two weeks. That is, if I drop the special soap in the shower, someone must be here to hand it to me. I can't bend, twist, lift, or carry. I must walk, stand, or recline. I have to wipe with toilet paper attached to tongs. I may not passenge for two weeks or drive for at least four. By the second week, I must be walking seven minutes a day. Whoa.

I asked, in my pathetic voice, "If someone puts a guitar in my lap, can I play it?" And the nurse said I may, but she doesn't know if I can. Others have. Others have tried and been unsuccessful, getting back spasms from lifting their arms over the instrument to strum.

WAH!

I have high cholesterol, I am anemic, and I have a vitamin D deficiency. I am overweight. I am depressed and anxious. I am not the picture of good health. So of course I'm worried.

I guess this pressed flower represents me in some way. There's evidence of my former glory, but so much delight has been squashed out of me.

Oh. And I am so very blue.

dedicated to Incognito ndp because she inspired me with the scanned tulips.

Hmm I'm looking to do some major edits soon but this is what I have for now:)

Yeah so this is my tumblr www.tumblr.com/tumblelog/fluttering-heart

This restaurant is famous for its pressed duck. They give you a little card which has the number of your duck counted from the first one which was numbered over a century ago.

It was delicious. The meat was not oily at all and the sauce was very rich in flavour.

obviously this will need a lot of cleaning up once it's fired....if it survives the firing!

The top flower had that whiteish vibe to all of the flowers in all of them so I grabbed one. Only one I've seen like that. Taken in Sand Dunes State Forest.

Blackpool 233 was pressed into service on Monday 1st July after Grimsby & Immingham 26 failed towards the end of the day. With the weather improving the opportunity to use the open boat tram was too good to miss!

A rare photo of an empty boat tram! This was because at the end of the day it is policy that passengers have to get off the tram at the entrance so that the tram can return to the town and leave with another full load of passengers to the entrance.

Looking superb as ever!

WIRE JEWELRY MAKING WITH PRECIOSA PIP™

PRECIOSA ORNELA presents the new PRECIOSA Pip™ pressed bead from the PRECIOSA Traditional Czech Beads brand.

The bead’s dimensions of 5 x 7 mm comply with the current trend for mini beads. The axially symmetric flattened shape of the small core enables the realisation of half metal coating on both sides of the bead with the resulting effect of an overall decoration. The strung beads fit together tightly and create an interlocking zip effect. Six beads connected in a circle can easily be used to create an application in the shape of a flat flower which is a suitable accessory for seed bead embroidery. Thanks to its small protrusion, this bead is an excellent accessory to the two-hole PRECIOSA Twin™ beads and seed beads, like PRECIOSA Solo™.
