Meet a Guérande farmer

A profession - A passion
For centuries, salt workers have been the heirs and guardians of a unique heritage. To be a salt worker is to be a bit of a magician: extract the grain of salt from the drop of water.
The trade of salt worker is one of the rare agricultural professions which uses a technique free from mechanization and the addition of chemicals.
This artisanal production technique allows both to produce quality salt and to preserve an exceptional site.
A passion throughout the seasons
If the salt is harvested in summer, the harvest is prepared in winter and the proper functioning of a saltworks requires work throughout the year: alone or collectively, the salt worker adapts his work to the rhythm of the seasons.
WINTER
To protect the saltworks from frost and bad weather, the salt worker covers them with water. This season is entirely devoted to the cleaning (raking) of mudflats, to the maintenance of the embankments (reinforcement, cutting of vegetation) and to the cleaning of the supply and evacuation channels as well as any repairs necessary in the event of damage. that occurred during storms.
SPRING
At the beginning of March, it is necessary to empty (algir) the saltworks and the basins of the accumulated rainwater, then to evacuate the silt and the algae of each basin while reconstituting the clay dikes (bridges) which constitute the hydraulic circuit of the saline. It is also the time of collective work to complete repair (footwear), every 25 years, of a group of carnations (lotie).
SUMMER
This is the harvest of salt. 50 to 60 carnations are on average exploited by a salt worker (which represents an area of 3 to 4 ha) and requires long working days. Production is however highly variable depending on the amount of sunshine, winds and rainfall.
AUTUMN
Once the salt is "rolled", that is to say, put away for the winter, the pace of work slows down until mid-November. A period of rest which can however be interrupted in the event of a high tide to protect the saltworks.
In Guérande, a salt worker operator alone produces between 60 and 90 tonnes of coarse salt and 2 to 3 tonnes of fleur de sel per year! But this harvest varies considerably depending on weather conditions (from 0 to 200 tonnes of coarse salt)!
Salt worker tools
The tools used in the salt marshes have changed little over the centuries and have remained, for the most part, in wood.
THE LAS
With a long flexible handle 5 meters long, this tool is the best known. It is used to harvest coarse salt.
SALT FLOWER LOUSSE
Historically made of wood, the fleur de sel lousse is used to pick the fleur de sel from the surface of carnations. There are now more elaborate pouches made from modern, lighter food grade materials.
WHEELBARROW
It is used to transport the salt from the ladures to the trémet. At the very beginning of the 1950s, it replaced the gède, a wooden container that women carried balanced on their heads with a cushion of rolled-up canvas, the torch. Wheelbarrows can contain 120 to 150Kg of salt.
THE LOUSSE TO PONTE
The wooden pontoon lousse, comparable to the fleur de sel lousse, is distinguished by a shorter and larger handle. It is used for the annual repair of bridges.
THE RAKE IN LIMU
It is used to rake limu, an algae that grows in swamps.
THE CESSE (WOODEN)
The ceasefire is a large handheld scoop that is used to empty the water or throw in the mud.
LA BOYETTE (OR HOULETTE) (IN SHEET STEEL)
It is the salt worker shovel used for some maintenance work in salt marshes.
THE BOUTOUÉ (WOODEN)
Similar in shape to that of las, it is used to repel the mud from the eyeshadows and in the eyelets before harvesting, in order to ensure a great cleanliness of the funds.

M Branle-queue.
Mister Spots. This year again, and in the same field, we were able to admire this constantly tail-jerking bird. Many thanks to the generosity of the farmer who had preserved this piece of land in a condition that favors these birds nesting habits. I salute you.
🇬🇧 Biogradska Gora Park
During a visit to Biograd in 1878, King Nikola was astounded by the beauty of Lake Biograd. To thank him, the local peasants gave it to him as a gift. In return, the king decided to create a park to preserve it. Proclaimed a national park in 1952, Biogradska Gora is one of the country's smallest national parks, covering an area of 54km². Situated between the Tara and Lim rivers, it is home to one of the last primary forests in Europe, with trees over 500 years old, mountains reaching 2000m in altitude and 6 glacial lakes. 26 different ecosystems, 220 plant species, 150 bird species and 10 mammal species.
We had chosen to visit the park in a 4WD vehicle, first going up into the mountains to get a good view, and now we're obviously going to do a walking tour.

"The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country."

The History of Green Tea
The history of green tea dates back over 4,000 years to China, where it is considered a precious beverage and a symbol of harmony between man and nature. After developing in China, green tea spread throughout Asia and the rest of the world.
Green tea gets its name from the preparation method used to prevent the tea leaves from undergoing excessive oxidation. Typically, the leaves are hand-picked and then quickly heated to stop the oxidation process. This is what keeps their natural green color and preserves the health benefits of green tea.

These eagles have been nesting at Lake Wooddruff Preserver for many years judging by the size of the nest. American Bald Eagles mate for life and use the same nest each year unless the nest has been destroyed or the tree dies and becomes unsafe. When mating season start they return to the nest and start repairing and adding to the nest. This results in the nest becoming quite large. The largest on record, according to Guinness Book of World Records, was found near St. Petersburg Florida and measured 9ft wide by 20ft deep and weighed more that 2 tons.

Sometimes the lifeline just frays and breaks, sometimes the life preserver isn't strong enough to keep you afloat because the worries weighing you down are just too heavy, people that are never supposed to let you down ... do, there are people that you are just tired of sharing things with and you decide that it's best if you finally just keep things to yourself, and those people that are dropped into your path to encourage you, help you and make you laugh... they find a fork in the road along the way and take it, and you find yourself walking alone. So... you smile and you say.... nah, I'm just tired.... Yeah, just like that...

Ode To the West Wind
By Percy Bysshe Shelley
I
O wild West Wind, thou breath of Autumn's being,
Thou, from whose unseen presence the leaves dead
Are driven, like ghosts from an enchanter fleeing,
Yellow, and black, and pale, and hectic red,
Pestilence-stricken multitudes: O thou,
Who chariotest to their dark wintry bed
The winged seeds, where they lie cold and low,
Each like a corpse within its grave, until
Thine azure sister of the Spring shall blow
Her clarion o'er the dreaming earth, and fill
(Driving sweet buds like flocks to feed in air)
With living hues and odors plain and hill:
Wild Spirit, which art moving everywhere;
Destroyer and preserver; hear, oh, hear!
II
Thou on whose stream, 'mid the steep sky's commotion,
Loose clouds like earth's decaying leaves are shed,
Shook from the tangled boughs of Heaven and Ocean,
Angels of rain and lightning: there are spread
On the blue surface of thine aery surge,
Like the bright hair uplifted from the head
Of some fierce Maenad, even from the dim verge
Of the horizon to the zenith's height,
The locks of the approaching storm. Thou dirge
Of the dying year, to which this closing night
Will be the dome of a vast sepulchre,
Vaulted with all thy congregated might
Of vapors, from whose solid atmosphere
Black rain, and fire, and hail will burst: oh, hear!
III
Thou who didst waken from his summer dreams
The blue Mediterranean, where he lay,
Lulled by the coil of his crystalline streams,
Beside a pumice isle in Baiae's bay,
And saw in sleep old palaces and towers
Quivering within the wave's intenser day,
All overgrown with azure moss and flowers
So sweet, the sense faints picturing them! Thou
For whose path the Atlantic's level powers
Cleave themselves into chasms, while far below
The sea-blooms and the oozy woods which wear
The sapless foliage of the ocean, know
Thy voice, and suddenly grow gray with fear,
And tremble and despoil themselves: oh, hear!
IV
If I were a dead leaf thou mightest bear;
If I were a swift cloud to fly with thee;
A wave to pant beneath thy power, and share
The impulse of thy strength, only less free
Than thou, O uncontrollable! If even
I were as in my boyhood, and could be
The comrade of thy wanderings over Heaven,
As then, when to outstrip thy skiey speed
Scarce seemed a vision; I would ne'er have striven
As thus with thee in prayer in my sore need.
Oh, lift me as a wave, a leaf, a cloud!
I fall upon the thorns of life! I bleed!
A heavy weight of hours has chained and bowed
One too like thee: tameless, and swift, and proud.
V
Make me thy lyre, even as the forest is:
What if my leaves are falling like its own!
The tumult of thy mighty harmonies
Will take from both a deep, autumnal tone,
Sweet though in sadness. Be thou, Spirit fierce,
My spirit! Be thou me, impetuous one!
Drive my dead thoughts over the universe
Like withered leaves to quicken a new birth!
And, by the incantation of this verse,
Scatter, as from an unextinguished hearth
Ashes and sparks, my words among mankind!
Be through my lips to unawakened earth
The trumpet of a prophecy! O Wind,
If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?

This beautiful Grade II listed Edwardian pub on Old Town Road opposite the Falcon Pottery Works (see www.flickr.com/photos/nigelphoto2011/52847868278/) was run by legendary landlady Betty Buckley from 1952 for nearly four decades until she passed away in 2000 at the age of 87. When Betty retired in the 1990's her son Ken, and then more recently grandson Steve Buckley took over the reins. The Golden Cup was closed for an extended period over Lockdown and reopened in the summer of 2022 following a £250,000 refurbishment. The exterior has been preserved exactly as it was over a century ago including the tiling on the façade supplied by the Campbell Tile Co of London Rd, Stoke, which was added in 1912. A red triangle set in a life-preserver (engraved on the window glass and as part of the tilework below) was the logo of the Bass Brewery, the very first registered trademark in the country under the 1875 Trademarks Registration Act.

These three bears, once masters of this icy environment, no longer recognize their territory. The shrinking sea ice has reduced their opportunities to hunt seals, their main food source. These changes are forcing them to adopt new survival strategies, such as resting more to conserve energy. However, even these efforts are not enough to compensate for the daily caloric loss they suffer.
In the face of these challenges, the bears seem to symbolize a silent but powerful call for the protection of their habitat. Their daily struggle draws attention to the devastating effects of climate change not only on biodiversity but also on humanity itself. Scientists and environmental organizations use the iconic image of polar bears to raise awareness and encourage concrete action against global warming.
In this way, these three polar bears are reluctant activists for a greater cause. Their struggle to survive in a rapidly changing world is a poignant reminder of the urgent need to act to preserve our planet and its vulnerable inhabitants.

Candi Prambanan or Candi Rara Jonggrang is a 9th-century Hindu temple compound in Central Java, Indonesia, dedicated to the Trimurti, the expression of God as the Creator (Brahma), the Preserver (Vishnu) and the Destroyer (Shiva). The temple compound is located approximately 17 kilometres northeast of the city of Yogyakarta on the boundary between Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces.
The temple compound, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest Hindu temple site in Indonesia, and one of the biggest in Southeast Asia. It is characterized by its tall and pointed architecture, typical of Hindu temple architecture, and by the towering 47-metre-high central building inside a large complex of individual temples. Snowy egret shows its hunting intensity. Fun to watch. Riparian preserver at Water Ranch in Gilbert, Az
A female grackle takes a drink. Though not the prettiest bird in the world, I did like the colors reflecting on the water so I posted anyway. Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch in Gilbert, AZ where we often take our Saturday morning walk.
Pink Ceiba, the flowers of the world's fastest growing tree! The inside of its trunk is so soft that it has 4 inch spikes to protect it from predators... giving it its nickname, Monkey Tree, because a agile monkey can climb it!
The Ceiba tree figures an important part in the mythologies of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures. Several Amazonian tribes of eastern Peru believe deities live in Ceiba tree species throughout the jungle. The Maya civilization believed that Yaaxché, often depicted as a Ceiba trunk, connects the planes of the Underworld (Xibalba), the terrestrial realm and the skies. Unmistakable clusters of thick conical thorns on the Ceiba trunk were reproduced during the Classical Period on ceramic burial urns and incense holders by the southern lowland Maya.
Modern Maya still respectfully leave the tree standing when harvesting forest timber. The Ceiba tree is represented by a cross and serves as an important architectural motif in the Temple of the Cross Complex at Palenque.
Ceiba pentandra produces a light and strong fiber (kapok) used throughout history to fill life preservers, mattresses, pillows, tapestries, and dolls. Kapok has recently been replaced in commercial use by synthetic fibers. The oils of Ceiba seeds are extracted to make soap and fertilizers. The Ceiba continues to be commercialized in Asia especially in Java, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines.
