Ex-LNER/BR Thompson B1 4-6-0 61306 by the turntable at Marylebone station in late-August 1966. The loco had brought the up 8:15 from Nottingham Victoria on August 23rd, but had failed here with a hot box.. This was the last time a scheduled service hauled by an Eastern Region loco arrived over the Great Central mainline to London.

Mainline services from Nottingham ended on September 3rd 1966, and 61306 was withdrawn a year later, in September 1967, but was then purchased for preservation, and stored at Carnforth for a while.. It returned to steam - in (incorrect) LNER-branded green livery, numbered 1306 and named ''Mayflower'' - at 'Steamtown' Carnforth, and later moved to the Great Central Railway at Loughborough. In recent years it was repainted as 61306 in (correct) LNER green with 'British Railways' on the side. Today (2023) it is mainline-certified, and operating on UK railtours and preserved lines..

Marylebone station is still in constant use by Chiltern Railways services, but the turntable has vanished.. The deck and operating machinery is now installed at Fort Wiliam, but the - flooded - turntable pit here is now completely buried under vegetation and trees.

Physiograms keep for quite a long time if bottled and stored properly. I estimate this one will stay fresh until the year 3025.

One single long exposure here. Two tripods, lens cap and refocus between transitions. Fairly pleased with this one :) Square crop so there wasn't so much blackness in the wings of the frame.

According to Wikipedia, the Many Glaciers Hotel is a historic hotel located on the east shore of Swiftcurrent Lake. The building is designed as a series of chalets, up to four stories tall, stretches for a substantial distance along the lakeshore, and has a Swiss alpine theme both on the outside and on the inside. The foundation is made of stone, with a wood superstructure. The outside is finished with brown-painted wood siding, and the window framing, and balconies have wood sawn in Swiss jigsaw patterns. On the inside, the four-story lobby is surrounded by balconies, whose railings are patterned after Swiss designs. Construction on the hotel began in 1914 and was finished in just 1 year on July 4, 1915. The Great Northern Railway was establishing a series of hotels and backcountry chalets in the park and the Many Glaciers Hotel was the "Gem of the West". This was part of an effort by Louis Hill, president of the Great Northern Railway and son of James J. Hill, to establish Glacier National Park as a destination resort and to promote the area as the "American Alps". To this end, Hill chose a Swiss chalet style for the hotels and chalets. The Glacier Park Lodge (previously known as the Glacier Park Hotel) and the Many Glaciers Hotel were intended to be the core structures, while the chalets and campgrounds were cited in the backcountry within an easy day's ride or hike from one of the hotels or another chalet. The chalets were intended to entice visitors to leave the comfort of the hotels and see the backcountry in a more rustic manner. These were especially used during the early 1900s when the Hotel first opened, and the main attraction in the park was horseback riding. In the early days of Many Glaciers Hotel only the rich and famous could afford to stay in this beautiful structure and the rustic chalets throughout the area. Today, the hotel still maintains its historic character, in part by not placing televisions in guest rooms. Most rooms either have views of Swiftcurrent Lake or the surrounding mountain scenery. The hotel is a contributing property in the National Historic Landmark, Great Northern Railway Buildings district. And is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The main attractions in the area include hiking, boat rides or rentals, or simply enjoying the western environment that Many Glaciers provides.

Where:

Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada

About:

Yeah, yeah, I know... another shot from Peggy's Cove! Well at least this is from a spot you don't see often, in fact I've never bothered to stop here to take a picture but the sky was too good to pass up.

This spot is right off the road about a mile or so before the turn off to lighthouse you see from me so often. It is a pretty neat area though. It reminds me some kind of barren tundra you might see way up north.

I think this spot will look nice when it's covered in snow with the water peeking through. We might be getting our first big snow fall of the year here tomorrow night. Somewhere between 6" a to a foot in total depending on which forecast you listen to. At any rate I will definitely get out with the camera if we do get snow. I'm always amazed how just an inch or two of snow can completely change the way a landscape looks.

Please, no invites or crazy glittery graphics. Just a simple comment is nice.

Thank You

Amtrak NPCU 9200 (formerly F40PH #200) sits stored at Amtrak's Chicago Locomotive Facility.

It was the class-leader for Amtrak and was also the first F40PH built. Considering the F40PHs influence on passenger train railroading in the US and Canada, this unit should be preserved.

It’s rather frustrating to look through strips of old negatives to find most pictures taken on the climb to Talerddig in 1965 and 66 are far from sharp and beyond rescue, with dull weather and an inadequate camera taking their toll. Many were taken during a chase after a last minute rush out of the car to the position with ‘seconds to spare’ which probably didn’t help.

At least with digital scanning, most of the scratches and contrast can be sorted out but refocusing awaits new technology.

One image which has just survived a serious cull is this of 7821 Ditcheat Manor’s solo assault on the climb on a typical wet day in summer 1965.

7821 is one of several Manors in preservation, so we can take nice sharp images of it, but unfortunately not climbing to Talerddig.

Life is very exciting!

A pretty miserable and chilly day in March 1964, although its still busy at Welshpool station with three trains present in the platforms. Here 80136 leaves with a service for Oswestry.

Times were changing on the fashion scene in ‘65, as the now famed anorak appeared alongside the ’60 icon duffle coat.

80136 survives today as a regular engine on the North York Moors Railway.

BR Class 120 DMU 502 at the disused Bicester London Road station in October 1973, during the Dean Forest Railway Preservation Society excursion to Long Marston, Quainton, and Didcot.

These units were all withdrawn by 1989, and one trailer has been preserved.

The station had closed at the end of 1967, and the platform on the right was demolished.

The line remained open for freight, and the station re-opened in 1989, with just the remaining platform seen here in use..

In recent years, this station has been demolished, and replaced by a brand-new 'Bicester Village' station.

2807 makes a fine sight as the sun glints on her body sides at Dartington, whilst working the 1415 Totnes - Buckfastleigh.

Having watched Midland Red's progress with underfloor-engine single-deckers since 1945, many operators minimised their single-deck bus orders until manufacturers caught up. London Transport was by far the biggest operator in the UK and, once AEC introduced its Regal IV design, placed a massive order for 700 such buses. This was also significant for Birmingham coachbuilder Metropolitan-Cammell which won the body order for them, along with 450 bodies for double-deckers.

These buses, known in London as the RF class, were very robustly constructed and had long lives. They were originally operated with conductors but very suitable for conversion to driver-only operation.

London Transport central buses are famously red. Fleet No. RF 381 (registration MXX 23) was delivered in January 1953 to Sutton garage. Surprisingly, bearing in mind the entrance is ahead of the front axle, the red buses were not built with doors although they were fitted later. It was converted to a driver-only vehicle during its May 1965 overhaul.

It was one of the last RFs, retiring when 26 years old from Kingston garage in March 1979. It was sold for preservation and passed to to the Transport Museum, Wythall, near Birmingham, in 1994.

Looking splendid after its 130 mile journey from London Victoria with the Cathedrals Express BR Standard 4-6-2 70013 Oliver Cromwell is being turned on the table at the Yeovil Junction Railway Centre. It will then move forward onto the pit for fire cleaning and watering.

The 70 foot turntable, driven by vacuum from the engine, was installed in 1947 by the Southern Railway to handle the then new Bulleid Pacifics. There was never an engine shed at Yeovil Junction but a turntable has been located here since the 1870s in what was the goods yard for the transfer of goods between the broad gauge GWR & standard gauge LSWR.

Not everyone's cup of tea from my generation, but to the younger enthusiast, this is what they grew up with and as a result deemed worthy of preservation in the modern world.

Anyway, a younger customer of ours has seen fit to buy, and throw a substantial sum of money at this bus which has included a new gearbox, an almost complete re-panel, new batteries, new front tyres, various mechanical components and a complete re-spray back into Notts & Derby colours.

This was the Optare Solo yesterday when it arrived back from the paintshop. Now to make some decals . . .

On reflection I wasn't 100% happy with the Conserved shoot so I decided to do a reshoot. This feels much more me and more in line with the concept.

50th Anniversary Celebration Weekend – 17th and 18th June 2023.

We are celebrating 50 years of preservation at the GCR

The former Great Central Railway was closed in 1969 by British Rail. Efforts to reopen the line began immediately with a band of volunteers campaigning to get access to the line.

In 1973, the first trains ran only two miles between Loughborough and Quorn and Woodhouse station. They were hauled by a locomotive from Norwegian State Railways and featured an old wooden carriage.

Since then the operation has grown with trains running to Rothley station and then a new platform at Leicester North. A second line was laid to create a double track railway with heritage signalling. Nowadays carefully restored steam and diesel locomotives run passenger and demonstration freight trains, bringing visitors from all over the world to Leicestershire.

The railway is now operated as a not for profit PLC, with shareholders investing in the line in return for a say in how it’s run. It’s also supported by members of the Friends of the Great Central Main Line and the David Clarke Railway Trust.

The Great Central Railway will clock up a special milestone in June 2023. It’s fifty years since volunteers were able to return steam trains to the award winning heritage line.

Over a special gala weekend on the 17th and 18th of June, the railway will welcome visitors to celebrate the anniversary and look to the future. On the Saturday, the largest locomotive on the line, (a member of the powerful 9F class which dates from the 1950s) will have the honour of pulling a train made up of fifty freight wagons, something the GCR has never attempted before.

Steam and diesel locomotives will be in action hauling passenger trains. On Sunday trains will also run on the Mountsorrel Branch Line. There will be other attractions at the lines stations, including a photo display and heritage vehicles will be open to view. Tours of the locomotive shed at Loughborough will take visitors behind the scenes.

Highlights are expected to include:

Driver for £10 - Drive a steam locomotive in the sidings for £10 for runabout ticket holders (£25 otherwise) - Quorn & Woodhouse.

Participants must be over 18 years of age.
