Henry M. Flagler's Florida East Coast Railroad Line reached Palm Beach in 1894. The Seaboard Airline Railroad Line laid tracks to Palm Beach as late as 1921-1924. It was after 1921 that the Seaboard Airline tracks reached West Palm Beach. Reference to the Seaboard Airline Railroad Station appears in a book printed in 1926.

S. Davis Warfield was president of Seaboard Air Line and in 1924 Warfield built a cross-state line which serviced West Palm Beach and Miami and Homestead in 1926, making a direct rail connection from one coast to the other, across the state. In 1938 the Atlantic Coast Line and the Seaboard Airline Railroad Line formed a network over Florida. Trains were air-conditioned and streamlined, and power was generated by Diesel-electric locomotives.

Stockholders in the railroad were important Palm Beach residents, and this station combined their taste in architecture, and their desire for service and convenience, for the community related to their vacation and retirement residences.

L. Phillips Clarke, who designed all of the Seaboard Railroad stations, built his first station at Auburndale. The West Palm Beach station appeared in 1924-1925.

The north-south dimension, paralleling the tracks, is approximately 178 feet. It is 43 feet deep, not including (at the sides) a 13-foot platform on the west. The building is mainly one story high, with a single office on a two-story level near the center and a three-stage tower on the south corner of the east or entrance facade on Tamarind Avenue.

The plan is rectangular, divided essentially in half, with express room and baggage room to the left or south, and behind the loggia the two waiting rooms, now one, separated on the east by restrooms and on the west by the ticket office. The loggia surrounds most of the front and ends, and the shed—roofed passenger platform on the rear or trackside.

The City of West Palm Beach, following a purchase of the building in 1988, tapped local architecture firm Oliver Glidden & Partners to head a $4.3 million restoration of the structure. The project was completed and the station rededicated in a ceremony attended by the Florida Governor in April 1991. Architect Robert D. Brown directed the restoration of ornamental cast stone elements, exterior masonry, doors, windows, and iron and tile work. The red clay tile roof was replaced, as were the electrical, lighting, plumbing and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Abatement of lead and asbestos was further required to bring the historic structure up to modern building code standards. The restoration effort earned the Florida Trust Award for Historic Preservation in 1994.

In summer 2012, the city finished an improvement project that included the installation of new sidewalks and more than five dozen trees around the building. The improvements were funded with a $750,000 Transportation Enhancement grant from the Federal Highway Administration, to which the city provided a $150,000 local match.

The station has two side platforms, with access to the station on both sides. West of the southbound platform is a long loop of bus bays serving Palm Tran routes. East of the northbound platform is the station house, a small parking lot, and bus stops for Greyhound Lines buses and Tri-Rail shuttles.

Collierville, TN

An extra shot from my coverage of the Collierville Preservation Party for the Collierville Herald.

Earlier this year B&O No. 434811, a 1927 W-2A four-bay “hopper” railroad car that was stuffed and mounted in Chambersburg, PA was being evicted from it's home along the town's rail trail. Wrecked in a derailment decades ago, it had been rescued from a DuBois scrap yard in the 1990's and slowly restored at a handful of locations across PA by a handful of volunteers. All of this work was done without having a permanent home for the car.

I had a home for it; but that's nothing without the ability to move it. So I turned to Dave Burkholder, the owner of Dave's Truck Repair. Dave has moved this car five times over the years and I needed him to move it two more times. He didn't hesitate.

The owner of a towing and repair company in Chambersburg, he's a pillar of the region's railroad preservation efforts. He's moved over 15 pieces of rolling stock: steam locomotives, cabooses, a vinegar car and most recently, the PC 184301 that we turned into the Cumberland Valley Railroad Museum. In the past, when no one would move a rail car for us, at any price, Dave said "no problem." It is because of his experience and generosity that so many preservation projects get off the ground, or in the case of B&O 434811, survive.

Today Dave moved the car for a seventh time, to it's permanent home on the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail. Lucky seven; we're all lucky to have someone like Dave working to preserve our history.

Physiograms keep for quite a long time if bottled and stored properly. I estimate this one will stay fresh until the year 3025.

One single long exposure here. Two tripods, lens cap and refocus between transitions. Fairly pleased with this one :) Square crop so there wasn't so much blackness in the wings of the frame.

About:

Yeah, yeah, I know... another shot from Peggy's Cove! Well at least this is from a spot you don't see often, in fact I've never bothered to stop here to take a picture but the sky was too good to pass up.

This spot is right off the road about a mile or so before the turn off to lighthouse you see from me so often. It is a pretty neat area though. It reminds me some kind of barren tundra you might see way up north.

I think this spot will look nice when it's covered in snow with the water peeking through. We might be getting our first big snow fall of the year here tomorrow night. Somewhere between 6" a to a foot in total depending on which forecast you listen to. At any rate I will definitely get out with the camera if we do get snow. I'm always amazed how just an inch or two of snow can completely change the way a landscape looks.

Please, no invites or crazy glittery graphics. Just a simple comment is nice.

Thank You

Amtrak NPCU 9200 (formerly F40PH #200) sits stored at Amtrak's Chicago Locomotive Facility.

It was the class-leader for Amtrak and was also the first F40PH built. Considering the F40PHs influence on passenger train railroading in the US and Canada, this unit should be preserved.

It’s rather frustrating to look through strips of old negatives to find most pictures taken on the climb to Talerddig in 1965 and 66 are far from sharp and beyond rescue, with dull weather and an inadequate camera taking their toll. Many were taken during a chase after a last minute rush out of the car to the position with ‘seconds to spare’ which probably didn’t help.

At least with digital scanning, most of the scratches and contrast can be sorted out but refocusing awaits new technology.

One image which has just survived a serious cull is this of 7821 Ditcheat Manor’s solo assault on the climb on a typical wet day in summer 1965.

7821 is one of several Manors in preservation, so we can take nice sharp images of it, but unfortunately not climbing to Talerddig.

A pretty miserable and chilly day in March 1964, although its still busy at Welshpool station with three trains present in the platforms. Here 80136 leaves with a service for Oswestry.

Times were changing on the fashion scene in ‘65, as the now famed anorak appeared alongside the ’60 icon duffle coat.

80136 survives today as a regular engine on the North York Moors Railway.

Avro Vulcan XM655 is one of three remaining taxiable Avro Vulcan strategic bombers, the other two being XH558 and XL426. XM655 is owned by Wellesbourne Mountford Airfield and has been maintained by the 655 Maintenance & Preservation Society since 1998.

XM655 was completed on 19 November 1964. It is the youngest surviving example and the only operable Avro Vulcan with the more powerful Bristol Olympus 301 engines. Commissioned at RAF Cottesmore in 1964, XM655 initially flew with Nos. 9, 12 and 35 Squadrons before moving to the Waddington Wing in 1967 to join Nos. 44, 50 and 101 Squadrons.

XM655 has appeared in several video documentaries about the Vulcan, Falklands operations and the Royal Air Force. Usually it has been used as a stand-in for the activities that cannot be filmed at the sites or on the aircraft featured.

Now in the hands of the Tayside Vehicle Preservation Society. New to Brylaine of Boston, then with RATP Yellow Bus, to Citistar of Paulton and finally with Warwickshire Travel of Rugby.

Having watched Midland Red's progress with underfloor-engine single-deckers since 1945, many operators minimised their single-deck bus orders until manufacturers caught up. London Transport was by far the biggest operator in the UK and, once AEC introduced its Regal IV design, placed a massive order for 700 such buses. This was also significant for Birmingham coachbuilder Metropolitan-Cammell which won the body order for them, along with 450 bodies for double-deckers.

These buses, known in London as the RF class, were very robustly constructed and had long lives. They were originally operated with conductors but very suitable for conversion to driver-only operation.

London Transport central buses are famously red. Fleet No. RF 381 (registration MXX 23) was delivered in January 1953 to Sutton garage. Surprisingly, bearing in mind the entrance is ahead of the front axle, the red buses were not built with doors although they were fitted later. It was converted to a driver-only vehicle during its May 1965 overhaul.

It was one of the last RFs, retiring when 26 years old from Kingston garage in March 1979. It was sold for preservation and passed to to the Transport Museum, Wythall, near Birmingham, in 1994.

Thanks to all who comment or favorite; it is always appreciated!

I took this beautiful picture of Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's famous home in Charlottesville, Virginia. Designed by Jefferson himself, Monticello is an outstanding example of neoclassical architecture, displaying Jefferson's influences from ancient Roman and Palladian designs. The property is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens and lush greenery, reflecting Jefferson's love for horticulture and innovative gardening techniques. Monticello is a testament to Jefferson's diverse talents and lasting impact on American history.

Not everyone's cup of tea from my generation, but to the younger enthusiast, this is what they grew up with and as a result deemed worthy of preservation in the modern world.

Anyway, a younger customer of ours has seen fit to buy, and throw a substantial sum of money at this bus which has included a new gearbox, an almost complete re-panel, new batteries, new front tyres, various mechanical components and a complete re-spray back into Notts & Derby colours.
