During a heat wave in July, I decided to seek cooler temperatures and made my way up to Whitney Portal for the day. I'm not quite sure what possessed me to take this shot, maybe it was after I was doing some research on Peter Lik. I noticed that the majority of his photos are panoramas with couple a of interesting vertical panos. So I decided that maybe I should have at least one present in my gallery. We sat here with several other photographers waiting for the clouds to shift towards an alignment over the falls. During the two hours that I waited, I watched as clouds drifted by but never quite right over the stream and finally grew tired of waiting. I started to make my way back to my truck when I walked past these trees and saw a little wisp of a cloud and thought this is a good opportunity to take a 2 image vertical panorama. This one was taken the day after my last post on "The Ancient One'

Bust of a Youth (1640)

Francesco Mochi (1580-1654)

Chicago Art Institute

One of the most individual sculptors of his age, Francesco Mochi possessed an astoun- ding technical prowess. Although his output was relatively small, Mochi was one of the most original artists to emerge in seventeenth-century Italy. His art is distinguished by energetic lines, dramatic movement, and subtle psychology. Here a taut precision characterizes the youth’s garment, and a carefully composed rhythm governs Mochi’s virtuoso treatment of the corkscrew curls. In contrast to the greater precision of the hair and drapery, the wistful expression of the youth, with his slightly parted lips, endows the sculpture with life. This work may have been conceived as a portrait, but it is more likely a biblical or mythological subject. The almost transcendent expression suggests that the sculpture may represent a religious figure, such as the youthful Saint John the Baptist. Its small scale suggests that the work was intended as an object for private contemplation.

FOR E.

On the Soul (Greek Περὶ Ψυχῆς (Perì Psūchês) is a major treatise by Aristotle on the nature of living things.

His discussion centres on the kinds of souls possessed by different kinds of living things, distinguished by their different operations. Thus plants have the capacity for nourishment and reproduction, the minimum that must be possessed by any kind of living organism. Lower animals have, in addition, the powers of sense-perception and self-motion (action).

Humans have all these as well as intellect.

Is this true?

“That the world of today presents all the symptoms of demonic possession.”

― Amitav Ghosh, Gun Island

Let's skate!

Seemed like such an innocent toy

He was the All-American boy

Got a skate at eight years old

Now the story can be told

Beware he's possessed to skate!

Skating takes him up in height

He's a pilot on a modern flight

See him flying through the air

If he don't land then he don't care

Cause he rips - he rips

When he skates - he skates

Cause he never hesitates

He's the wizard on the wheels

Like a modern gladiator ain't got no fears

So skate

He shoots the pool like a launching pad

If it ain't insane then you can't get rad

Skating is all that's on his mind

He's skating radical all the time

Cause he rips - he rips

When he skates - he skates

Cause he never hesitates

He's the wizard on the wheels

Like a modern gladiator ain't got no fears

So skate

Beware he's possessed to skate!

Looks like a magic carpet ride

Six foot aerial inverts backside

Optical illusion it must be

He redefines insanity

Cause he rips - he rips

When he skates - he skates

Cause he never hesitates

He's the wizard on the wheels

Like a modern gladiator ain't got no fears

So skate

Doesn't understand why you'd wanna walk

Ain't got time to sit and talk

Used to be just like you and me

Now he's an outcast of society

Beware he's possessed to skate!

And the skating's getting radical

This one is for Beth who would be laughing over what I've done to poor Ozzie's eye. I miss you both!

Until the Autumn 2018 I had never visited the Abbey of Saint Remi in Reims. This is strange because I must have visited the city many times . I guess I was so familiar with the centre of the city I have not consulted a guide book on Reims for years. Every visit would certainly include a look into the magnificent Reims cathedral which is always a joy.

I was unaware that only twenty minutes away from the cathedral was another incredibly beautiful and historic church. I found out about it at an exhibition I saw in Provence that featured the sites in France designated as World Heritage sites by UNESCO . Reims did not have one but two fine churches on the list. The Abbey of Saint-Remi, together with the nearby cathedral of Notre-Dame de Reims became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. All I can say its well worth seeing its more austere than the cathedral though it does have extraordinary thirteenth century stained glass windows . This is a view from the alter looking towards the West door

A little history

The obscure origins of the great abbey at Reims lie in a little 6th-century chapel dedicated to Saint Christopher. The abbey's success was founded on its acquisition of the relics of St. Remi in 553; subsequently gifts poured in upon it from pious donors. By the 9th century the abbey possessed about 700 domains and was perhaps the most richly endowed in France. It seems probable that secular priests were the first guardians of the relics, but were succeeded by the Benedictines. From 780 to 945 the archbishops of Reims served as its abbots. At the abbey of St Remi King Charlemagne received Pope Leo III. Abbot Theodoric erected the magnificent surviving basilica which Pope Leo IX dedicated in 1049 and to which he granted many privileges.

“-If I somehow possessed a set of videotapes that contained all the most significant events of your childhood, in their entirety, would you want to see them?

-Absolutely. Right this very second.

-But why? Don't you think some of the tapes would be very sad?

-Most of them, yes. But if I could see them, then I could have them in my brain like regular memories-horrible memories, yes, but regular memories, not sinister little ghosts in my head that pop out of some part of me I don't even know, and take the rest of me away. Do you know what I mean?

-I think so, If you have to remember, you'd rather do it in the front of your brain than in the back.”

As I approached the magnificent Chenonceau Palace on that cloudy day, I couldn't help but marvel at its enchanting beauty. The palace stood proudly over the gently flowing river, its graceful arches and intricate details casting a spell on anyone who laid eyes on it.

The muted sunlight struggled to break through the thick blanket of clouds, giving the palace an ethereal aura. The river, usually vibrant and lively, appeared subdued, its waters diminished, trickling lazily along its course. It was as if the river sympathized with the somber mood of the day, reflecting the melancholic sky above.

As I stood on the riverbank, gazing at the palace, I was struck by its unique design. Chenonceau's iconic arches extended gracefully over the water, creating a harmonious connection between the palace and the river. The architectural masterpiece seemed to defy the passage of time, standing as a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of those who built it centuries ago.

The palace itself, with its symmetrical wings and delicate embellishments, exuded elegance and grandeur. Despite the muted colors of the day, the stone facade retained a regal allure, seemingly untouched by the weather. Vines crawled up the walls, adding a touch of nature's whimsy to the imposing structure.

The surrounding gardens, although not in full bloom, still possessed an undeniable charm. The neatly trimmed hedges and meticulously arranged flower beds hinted at the magnificence that awaited during the vibrant seasons. Even in their slumber, the gardens radiated a tranquil beauty, inviting visitors to wander through their pathways and explore their hidden corners.

As I continued my contemplation of the palace, I imagined the rich history and the stories it held within its walls. It served as a stage for both triumph and tragedy, witnessing the lives of noble families and influential figures throughout the years. The palatial halls, once filled with laughter and music, now stood in silence, their secrets locked away.

The combination of the overcast sky, the diminished river, and the stoic presence of Chenonceau Palace created a melancholic atmosphere that somehow added to the allure of this historic gem. It was a sight to behold, a moment frozen in time, and I couldn't help but feel privileged to witness the palace's quiet grandeur on that cloudy day.

Possessed I think lol.
