La galaxie spirale barrée UGC 678 (Hubble) se situe à 260 millions d'années-lumière de la Terre dans la constellation des Poissons (Pisces). Presque de face, avec au centre une faible barre, ses bras spiraux sont paresseusement enroulés. Au premier plan, une galaxie périphérique plus petite semble diviser sa partie supérieure en deux.
Les galaxies spirales barrées ont une structure d'étoiles en forme de barre qui s'étend des côtés opposés du renflement central de la galaxie. Celles-ci se forment lorsque les orbites des étoiles proches du cœur de la galaxie deviennent instables et s'étirent, créant une barre. Cette dernière grandit à mesure que leur gravité capture de plus en plus d’étoiles proches (cf. ESA/Hubble & NASA, C. Kilpatrick, R.J. Foley).

Pisces is the most modest and unassuming sign of the zodiac. Cet anneau fantomatique de matière noire de 2,6 années-lumière de diamètre se situe à 5 milliards d'années-lumière de la Terre dans la constellation des Poissons (Pisces). C'est l'une des preuves les plus solides à ce jour de l'existence de cette matière noire (l'Arlésienne cosmique !), substance encore inconnue aujourd'hui qui imprègne cependant l'univers et considérée actuellement comme la structure sous-jacente du cosmos.
Cette image est issue des observations de Hubble qui a cartographié les formes déformées de la lumière d'une dizaine de faibles galaxies lointaines d'arrière-plan, situées pour certaines d'entre elles deux fois plus loin que celles de l'amas, lumière courbée et créée par la lentille gravitationnelle de ZwCl0024+1652. Cela en excluant les concentrations de masse centrées sur les galaxies visibles et donc en incluant plus de 98 % de la masse restante de l'amas représentée par la matière noire, cette dernière étant malgré tout centrée près de ses galaxies les plus brillantes.
Cet anneau de matière noire est probablement né d'une collision entre deux amas gigantesques ayant déclenché des enveloppes de matière noire en expansion radiale autour de chacun de leurs noyaux. Cette collision se superposant en projection sur le ciel a certainement formé le motif annulaire de cet amas à la disposition spatiale unique (cf. NASA, ESA, M.J. Jee and H. Ford Johns Hopkins University).

Here is the beginning of my entry for the cool colour challenge.
My substrate is a 13" melamine platter. I filled the indentation up with adhesive. I've stuck down the border tiles but so far I only have the fish stuck on mesh. I'm still not sure about my background design yet and the position of the two fish. I can still move the fish around.

One of the twelve signs of the Zodiac bosses in the vaulted ceiling of the archway leading to the main quadrangle.
Merton College is one of the very oldest in Oxford, being founded by Bishop Walter de Merton in 1264, and whilst there are other claimants in the city for the title of the most ancient Merton remains the most structurally complete of these earliest foundations (by virtue of its medieval architecture remaining largely intact whereas the rival claimants have been largely rebuilt over the following centuries).
The most impressive part of the complex is the chapel, a remarkable 14th century church with a handsome central tower finished a century later. The chapel is on an ambitious scale and was clearly originally intended to be cruciform but never received its nave (a roof-line is marked out on the west wall but work never proceeded beyond this point). Most of the building is in uniform 13th century Decorated Gothic style aside from the Perpendicular tower and the larger windows in the transepts.
Merton College has more quadrangles and courtyards to enjoy beyond the chapel, and is perhaps my favourite of the Oxford colleges. An entry fee is required here nowadays but you are then free to explore on your own once through the door.
