I believe I can read a little into the souls of those around me, maybe it is not so.
Oh, when I have a good day I feel as if I can peer deep into other people's souls, although, I don't have a particularly good head on my shoulders.
We sit in a room, some men and women, and I, and I seem to see what is going on in the hearts of these people and what they think of me.
I put something into every flashing glance of their eyes, occassionaly the blood rushes to their cheeks so they turn red, at other times they pretend to be looking another way while still watching me out of the corner of their eyes. There I sit observing all this, and nobody suspects that I see through every soul, for several years I have thought I could read the souls of everybody.
Maybe it is not so.

The Definitive Holistic Medicine Guide to Caring for Your Dog and Cat
A pioneering revolutionary prescription for the health and long life of your pets.
For two decades, Dr. Martin Goldstein--America's most successful, renowned holistic veterinarian--has healed and helped his animal patients with the same natural therapies that benefit humans. The results have been so astounding that today critically sick pets are brought to him from across the country for a new chance at life and health.
In this compelling, very accessible book, Dr. Goldstein explains exactly what holistic medicine is and how it works. By treating the root of a health problem instead of its symptoms, you too can help your animal to regain and maintain its own health, as nature intended. Dr. Goldstein also shares many remarkable true stories of supposedly terminally ill animals who have recovered to full wellness. Inside you'll discover
- Why our animals get sick, even when we strive to give them the best of care
- An exhaustive A to Z guide of pet ailments--and the best course of action
- Why vaccines can do more harm than good
- The link between diet and disease--and how the right diet can not only prevent disease but reverse it
- How acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, and other alternative options work--safely and painlessly--to restore true health
- Specific guidance for the use of herbs, supplements, and natural remedies
- The good news (and the bad) about cancer in animals--including extraordinary new treatments and potential cures
- Coping with the inevitable death of your pet--both physically and psychologically
And much, much more

This free-flying Night heron can be found at the sea lion enclosure at feeding time each day. It was very confiding, allowing me to get close. Even after feeding time was long after, after I had wandered around the zoo and returned to the enclosure on my way out, the heron was still perched there, head tucked in its feathers as the temperature dropped. Stunning bird.
See here for a recent report on these much discussed birds.
Further information from Stephen at Lothianbirdnews.
An update on zoo-derived Night Herons. Thanks to Jo Elliot, Animal Records
Keeper at the zoo and formerly Senior Keeper of the Bird Section, we now have
better info on what may be only two remaining birds. In summary:
Bird 1 - single vertically-split band half blue half yellow, seen April 09 to
date (at least); this is a "new style" band, probably numbered, used on birds
hatched 1989 to 1993 [a small possibility this bird is one ringed from 1997 to
2004, when sequences used were not recorded so carefully]; if caught numbers may
be readable, and thereby pin down hatch year.
Bird 2 - red over blue left (blue appears green in photos), red right to 2006
but missing subsequently, bird seen to date; this individual seems to have old
style bands used from 1983 to 1987 (possibly 1988?); again if caught it may be
possible to confirm lack of numbers and also check for transponder fitted to
(some?) birds in that period, thus confirm year.
Alan's 2006 photos were key to this identification, since careful comparison
with more recent images (thanks also to Bruce) suggests it is the same bird, it
just dropped a colour band btwn 2006 and 2008 (and they are not closed bands,
just a wrap round plastic ring like off a ring-binder, so they could easily be
lost).
In addition, the zoo inform us that a bird with metal ring and red right,
red-lime-blue left, ringed (and transpondered) in 1983 was definitely still at
the zoo in 2000.
In summary, it is likely that the current ages of remaining two are 16 and 23
yrs respectively, and the metal-ringed bird was 17 yrs old in 2000, but without
catching the former two are strictly unconfirmed. The current published
longevity records I can trace are 16 yrs in Europe and 21 yrs for N American
race (hoactli), the zoo birds are of course the latter.
Zoo not sure if they will try to catch birds, though it does not look to
difficult a job to me given their regular occurrence (apparently routine at
sealion feeding 11:15hrs) and if there are any volunteers (ringers?) for such I
would happily pass on!
Finally, it is remarkable that these birds are probably out of the zoo in the
local area for most of the time yet are hardly ever reported (Mike's sighting
last New Year's Eve excepted, the only other adult in Lothian since 2001 was the
bird at Bavelaw in Feb 2007, with a juv in Haddington in 2002 per BirdGuides
only). Anecdotal info per zoo staff is that their birds "winter on the Water of
Leith", also a report of one "seen regularly in Haddington", but these are
unconfirmed and undated. Thus all further records of Night Herons in or out of
the zoo, preferably with colour band details, would be most welcome!

Thaipusam actually celebrates the birthday of the Hindu deity Subramaniam. On this occasion, Hindus show the sincerity of their faith. It is a time for making and fulfilling vows. Devotees pray for divine help and make vows. When their prayers are answered, they fulfil their vows.
To do this, a devotee would pierce his cheeks, tongue, face or other suitable body parts with sharp objects. Next his friends or relatives load a *kavadi on his shoulder. Finally, in a trance-like manner, he goes on a 4km journey of faith.
Others, including young children, might join the procession carrying only milk pots. The Thaipusam Singapore procession starts at the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple on Serangoon Road and ends at the Sri Thandayuthapani Temple on Tank Road.
At first look, one might think that the festival starts at one temple and ends at another. Not so. Many of the devotees start fasting a month before the Thaipusam Singapore festivities. Others fast a week. Yet others three days.
A Hindu friend said this to me, "If you are going to put a 12-inch skewer through your cheeks and a hundred spikes in your chest, you'd better take your fast seriously!"
* A kavadi is a cage-like structure carried by devotees during the Thaipusam Festival.
It is traditionally decorated with peacock feathers and aluminium plates which show images of Hindu deities. Sharp spikes criss-cross its lower section.
An elaborate kavadi might weigh up to 15kg! It is quite something just to lift it. But these chaps I saw actually walked with them for 4km - kavadis, skewers, hooks, spikes and all!
Some of them even skipped and danced with their kavadis. Either they have great endurance or they have some supernatural help.

Geez, this biology class is sucking the fun out of my spring "break." I have yet to actually take a break. I've still got 4 days, I can do this!!
I think I've finally gotten over my mini-obsession with Matt & Kim. It was short lived, but really intense. I've now moved on to how dope The Strokes' new album is. I've waited for this album for so long & it's kind of surreal to be listening to it. Yes, I am a music junkie, it's how I get my fix.

Last Tuesday I visited the nursery at my local park for the first time this year.
They were preparing the gardens for the 2010 season and in the heated houses I found this beautiful Orchid that was just begging to be photographed.
Orchidaceae are well known for the many structural variations in their flowers.
Some orchids have single flowers but most have a racemose inflorescence, sometimes with a large number of flowers. The flowering stem can be basal, that is produced from the base of the tuber, like in Cymbidium, apical, meaning it grows from the apex of the main stem, like in Cattleya, or axillary, from the leaf axil, as in Vanda.
As an apomorphy of the clade, orchid flowers are primitively zygomorphic (bilaterally symmetrical), although in some genera like Mormodes, Ludisia, Macodes this kind of symmetry may be difficult to notice.
The orchid flower, like most flowers of monocots has two whorls of sterile elements. The outer whorl has three sepals and the inner whorl has three petals. The sepals are usually very similar to the petals (and thus called tepals,), but may be completely distinct.
The upper medial petal, called the labellum or lip,, is always modified and enlarged. The inferior ovary or the pedicel usually rotates 180 degrees, so that the labellum, goes on the lower part of the flower, thus becoming suitable to form a platform for pollinators. This characteristic, called resupination occurs primitively in the family and is considered apomorphic (the torsion of the ovary is very evident from the picture). Some orchids have secondarily lost this resupination, e. g. Zygopetalum and Epidendrum secundum.
The normal form of the sepals can be found in Cattleya, where they form a triangle. In Paphiopedilum (Venus slippers) the lower two sepals are fused together into a synsepal, while the lip has taken the form of a slipper. In Masdevallia all the sepals are fused.

They're still on the tree, but we've cooled-down a lot.
This shows a honey bee with bee pollen on her legs. Hair on her legs helps collect the pollen while the honey bee moves about in the bloom. Notice the striping on her tail. The Italian breed of honey bees tend to be more yellow or "gold" and the German breed tend to be more black with little to no yellow banding. The Italian breed are also known for their gentleness where as the German breed are more aggressive. Both are common here in the United States.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris)
The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is by far the most common species that breeds in the eastern half of North America, although most states have sporadic Rufous sightings, and Bob and Martha Sargent have banded eight other hummingbird species as winter visitors to five southeastern states. Ruby-throats are intensely inquisitive and thus easily attracted to feeders, where males in particular typically display aggressive territoriality toward rival hummers, other birds, and even insects such as bees, butterflies, and sphinx moths. They quickly become accustomed to human presence, and will swoop down to investigate red articles of clothing, possibly as potential food sources. Feeders hung at windows attract as many visitors as ones farther from structures, and the bird that claims a feeder as its territory may spend much of the day perched nearby, guarding the food source against intruders. Many hummingbird watchers find "Hummer Warz" endlessly entertaining, although the chases are obviously serious business to the hungry birds. For a short period immediately after fledging, a female will tolerate the presence of her own young at the feeder, but they are soon treated the same as other adult birds - as rivals in pursuit of the food necessary to prepare for the fall migration.
Courtship is apparently very brief, if it exists at all, and once mated the female raises the young alone. The walnut-sized nest, built by the female, is constructed on a foundation of bud scales attached to a tree limb with spider silk; lichens camouflage the outside, and the inside is lined with dandelion, cattail, or thistle down. The nest will stretch to contain the growing nestlings, and may sometimes be reused (rebuilt) the following year.
Two white, pea-sized eggs are laid two or three days apart, which the female will incubate from 60 to 80 percent of the day for 12-16 days. Reports of the duration of the nestling phase vary from 14 to 31 days, the wide range possibly varying with the availability of food; 18-23 days is normal. when they leave the nest, the chicks are considerably larger than their mothers: they may weigh 4.5 grams, while poor Mom is down to only 2.5 g after the stress of raising them. Since the mother starts incubating the first egg as soon as it's laid, that chick will hatch and fledge earlier than its sibling; it will remain close to the nest until the other chick is ready to fly. After leaving the nest, fledglings are fed by their mother for about 10 days. It is thought that Ruby-throats live as long as 12 years, but the average is probably 3-5 years.
Physical Description
Average length: 3.5 inches (8.9 cm)
Average weight: 1/8 ounce (3.1 g)
Body temperature: 105°-108°F (40.5°-42.2°C)
Wing beats: 40-80 per second, average about 52
Respiration: 250 per minute
Heart rate: 250 beats/min resting; 1200 beats/min feeding
Flight speed: 30 mph (48 kph) normal; 50 mph (80 kph) escape; 63 mph (101 kph) dive
Plumage
Adult male: Emerald green back, iridescent ruby red gorget (throat) that may appear black under some lighting conditions, gray flanks, forked tail with no white. Smaller than the female.
Adult female: Emerald green back, white breast and throat, rounded tail with white tips. Larger than the male, with longer bill.
Juveniles: Young of both sexes look like the adult female. In August and September, young males may develop some red spots in the gorget.
Molts: One complete molt per year, which may start during the fall migration and continue into March. Young males acquire full ruby gorgets during their first molt.
Gender identification is simple if the light is right: the brilliant red gorget of the male is unmistakable. More commonly, though, the shape and presence of white on the tail is a more reliable field mark.
Distribution and Migration
Ruby-throats breed throughout eastern to midwestern North America, from southern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. Most winter in Mexico, Central America, and on Caribbean islands, although a few remain in the Gulf states and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Most researchers accept a remarkable non-stop crossing of the Gulf, taking 18-20 hours. They arrive at the coast in late February or early March, and follow the development of spring flowers northward, reaching my home in Morganfield, Kentucky on April 20 +/- 2 days. Males migrate earlier than females, in both directions; some adult males start south as early as JUly. Our female breeding birds leave here (Morganfield, Kentucky) in September, with the young of the year following; the last juveniles depart abruptly at first frost (mid-October). By mid-November the fall migration is essentially completed throughout North America.
Day 21/365 | Don’t worry ~ Playing for change (Worth a look!)
Ok, so a followup to yesterdays disaster.
It seems like the 24-70 survived the fall pretty much undamaged. The zooming is rather sluggish, hard to describe. But after 20 shots in the light today at different focallengths and apertures it seems like there isn’t any problems! Still going to talk to the insurance company and see if they will cover it if I send it in to fix the zoom ring, because it’s rather annoying…
About todays shot though! I’ll try and stop posting photos of danboard. He’s just a great model when I’m trying around different lighting techniques! Especially since I don’t have any other good models around! Also, I actually took a strobist info shot today! Check it out below if you care about that sort of thing. And yes. I used one of my black shirts as a background. It worked really well!

I did a PDHPE assignment on body image a while ago and that gave me this idea.
This photo represents that in today's society appearance is a major factor in success or something as simple as fitting in. Young girls develop eating disorders because they want to be thin and beautiful like the women they see in magazines or on TV. We should be encouraging people to be proud of who they are and that true beauty is on the inside, not just the outside.
I'm really happy with how this shot turned out :D. It's exactly how i pictured it, and that never happens

I have recently looked trough all my flickr photos and I think this one is my favourite out of all of them because of the meaning it holds is one I feel very strongly about, the way the meaning is conveyed and because its one of the first photos that i was really pleased with. i just thought i would add that here :P enjoy
