Series of GEO76 (6/6)

View On Black, or View my most interesting stream ON BLACK!

During our short visit to GEO76, I heard the Café owner talking about the history of the old house, felt the calm and relaxing atmosphere, and took some time wandering around discovering its beauty by myself... What a wonderful time we had there... Too bad the visit was too short though. What I feel now is the door to this beautiful place is open, but I haven't really got the chance to unfold its entire beauty yet! I hope I can be back sometime soon! :-)

note:

During our visit back to Taiwan the past September, we got the chance to spend some time in this old house which is currently named GEO76. Finished in 1931, GEO76 was part of the housing project to college professors. As the house was designed and built by Japanese, the concept of interior design was consistent with the Japanese style back then. The major building structure and the interior decoration have been carefully preserved by its owners over the years. The house is currently open for cafe, dining, and guided tours!

A visit to the Museo Etrusco on the Via Don Giovanni Minzoni in Volterra. Was a lot of Etruscan and Roman artifacts here. Also a back garden.

The Guarnacci museum is one of oldest public museums of Europe: it began in 1761 when the noble abbot Mario Guarnacci (Volterra 1701-1785) gave its enormous archaeological heritage, collected over years of research and purchases, to the "public of the city of Volterra".

The current disposition and location of materials demonstrate Maffei’s positivistic impact, with items separated by classes and the urns distinguished according to the theme of the bas-relief on the case. While respecting the historic memory of this arrangement, an attempt was made, in recent times, to associate it with another, more didactic, chronological tour inside the exhibition itself, able to conduct the visitor through the long history of the Etruscan Velathri.

Museo etrusco Guarnacci

The Guarnacci Etruscan Museum is located in via Don Minzoni in Volterra , and contains one of the most beautiful collections of Etruscan art.

In 1776 the canon of the cathedral of Volterra Pietro Franceschini found near the Etruscan necropolis of the Portone a hypogeum of considerable size dating back to the Hellenistic period, containing forty Etruscan urns, which in 1777 donated to the town of Volterra . This donation was the first nucleus of the Civic Museum which soon collected many other works found in the surroundings of Volterra and which until then had been kept in private collections of noblemen from Volterra.

Among the various donations, the most important and most important was that of Monsignor Mario Guarnacci ( 1701 - 1785 ), a wealthy priest who promoted numerous archaeological excavation campaigns, which on 15 September 1761 donated his entire collection to the newborn museum. He was named after the museum that in over two centuries of history has increased its heritage thanks to numerous excavation campaigns promoted by the Superintendency of Antiquities of Etruria.

The first seat of the museum was Palazzo Ruggeri, home of Guarnacci, later it was transferred first to some halls of the town hall and then from 1877 in the Desideri-Tangassi palace, the current headquarters.

The first Prefect and Librarian of the Guarnacci Museum is the Roman abbot Francesco Ballani , well-known librettist of his time, who was succeeded by Giuseppe Cailli in 1805 until his death in 1810 . Francesco Inghirami ( 1772 - 1846 ) occupied this position from 1810 until 1815 .

I didn't take much inside of the museum, only what took my interest at the time. Was mostly all the same kind of things from the Etruscan period.

On the floor in the middle of the building I didn't get more than these two sculptures. There was rooms with Roman tiles on the floors under raised walkways, and more sarcophagus!

Il Prete Marzio una Statua "Ritrovata"

The Priest Marzio a "Rediscovered" Statue

This statue, known since the early 1600s, was the

the result of a series of "restoration" projects

nineteenth-century, who have joined the stub

of an original statue of a togate of age

Roman a head composed, in turn, of

two different parts and two "shoulders" obtained

from marble bouquets from the

Cathedral of Volterra.

The result is that of a typical pastiche of the

taste of the last century that, until 1922 was

visible on the terrace above the source of

S. Stefano, in the formerly named place

Prato Marzio, from which it derives from the statue -

for corruption - even the name

traditional.

The current restoration has allowed

to remove unrelated parts

and to integrate the original gaps.

The head that today has been placed on the bust

belongs to the collection of the Guarnacci Museum

and it is certainly not relevant.

The type of marble, workmanship and I state of

conservation are however very much win a

those of the togato and therefore allow to give

an image - for example

and didactic - of the original form of the

monument, which by its nature permitted.

The insertion of different heads to the esconda of the

historic moment.

The dam of Mediano is located in the municipal term of La Fueva, to which it was gotten up Mediano in 1974, whose nucleus had been flooded by the dam. It is one of the greater ones of Aragón, with 1,714 Has. of surface and a volume of dam of 450 Hm.3. Its prey leans in the limestone wooded hills that form the straits of El Entremont in the Cinca river, at few kilometers of the tail of the dam of El Grado. It is destined fundamentally to water lands of the zone, and secondly to the production of electrical energy.

--------------------------------

CASTELLANO

The Beach is Closed Until Next Summer - La plage est fermée jusqu'à l'été prochain

- Récré-O-Parc, Sainte-Catherine

- September 3, 2008 / Le 3 septembre, 2008

- I just spent the afternoon in a wonderful nature park in Sainte-Catherine on the St-Lawrence River (Fleuve Saint-Laurent) facing the Lachine Rapids. I had never been there. This is a beach right next to the river at the entrance of the park. I took this photo through the chain-link fence as I was leaving and the sun was setting. The water level is obviously much higher during the bathing season. It was very hot! Our Summer has finally arrived (we had so much rain since the Spring until mid-August.). Now, we have real Summer weather.

On Black

So, as alluded to in the last post, I’m one of a decreasingly shrinking (i.e. it’s getting bigger) group of photographers who has never done film before. Ever. Shot it, developed it, paid for it, et cetera. That is, until a couple weeks ago when I bought my Holga 120N. And I’ve got to admit, I thoroughly enjoy it.

Since I am not Thomas Hawk and have no desire to publish a million photographs before I leave this world, going back in time to the [somewhat] long-gone days of film isn’t much of a hindrance on some larger task. Having gotten used to digital where I can take a shot, see if it’s exposed properly, and shoot it again, using film was- let’s face it- absolutely bizarre. What do you mean I have to wait to see what I just shot?! I want to see it now!

What’s more, it’s a Holga! I have no earthly idea how the final photograph’s going to look, focus is dependent on one person, three people, a group of people, or a MOUNTAIN. Aperture is a lie and there is only one shutter speed. The viewfinder doesn’t even frame the shot! The only thing I really control is the film (in this case, Ilford Delta 400).

But regardless, I have to admit- it’s a helluva experience.

I actually developed two rolls of film the other day when I developed this roll. The first, as mentioned, was a roll of Ilford FP4+ 125. And I absolutely botched it. I couldn’t get the damned thing onto the steel reel, and with the exception of half of one shot, nothing came out as more than a milky white blob. Not a big deal as it was the first roll I ran through the Holga and didn’t really have anything spectacular on it anyways.

Anyways, as for the actual developing, I was hoping that the darkroom on campus would have Rodinal (I heard it was forgiving) or Diafine (I like the contrast I’ve seen in shots using Delta 400 and Diafine), and took some numbers with me for both of those, but alas, they only had D-76. Again, no worries- I don’t really have preferences yet. This particular reel was soaked for 10.5 minutes, with 60 seconds of continuous agitation and an additional 3 inversions every 30 seconds. I used water as a stop bath (30s continuous agitation), and some unknown fixer for 6 minutes (same agitation as developer) followed by 8 minutes of washing. I actually skipped the Photoflo altogether, but that was due more to forgetfullness than intent, but there it is.

Now, the local photo store didn’t have any archival sheets for 120, so for the time being, I scanned in the shots and rerolled the film back in between the paper that 120 comes backed with and put that into the box. So much for preservation. It shall continue to live digitally at the least. (*knock on wood*) What can I say? I live in the digital age, and even when doing something analog like film, it’ll end up in the realm of the digital anyways.

So what are my thoughts? I think I love it. Or at least, I could, and will, given that the reeling process gets easier. You can’t see it in these scans, but even this second roll was imperfectly reeled. And I totally manhandled the film in the process. The whole process after reeling is quite enjoyable; I get to talk to other people in the darkroom with me all while shaking a metal can and eyeing a clock- we must seem ridiculous to a casual observer. Also, it’s probably the only bit of chemistry I’ll ever actually enjoy, so there’s that.

Narra and kamagong, kamagong inlays

83 x 224 x 224 cm (32 1/2 x 88 x 88 in)

Provenance:

Formerly from the family of Candelaria Moldes Santos, wife of Col. Leopoldo Santos, Philippine army and guerilla fighter during the Japanese occupation

Made in the Bilibid Prison which, from the early American colonial period until the end of the first half of the 20th century, manufactured high quality household and office furniture as part of its program to rehabilitate prisoners in preparation for their reintegration into mainstream society. Their outputs were arguably unrivaled in terms of craftsmanship, design and prolificity.

A rare 12-sided top, made of solid one-piece narra wood, framed by precious kamagong wood carved around the edges with acanthus gadrooning. To harvest wood with a girth this size - over 7 feet across when finished - the felled giant tree must be well over a hundred years old. Each conforming side of the frieze is carved with foliated scrolls centering an anthemion flower inscribed with C-volute. The heavy base is made of two crossed curule seat-shaped legs carved with foliated scrolls bordered by broad kamagong inlays, and undulate with winged rosettes, connected to a huge, turned central cylinder with flutings surmounted by scrolled arches and a finial. The lion’s paws with winged extensions embody immense strength and power.

Overall, the workmanship is quite remarkable, displaying great detailed carvings and decorations alluding to the Italian Neoclassical style that was popular in the early 19th century. A classic, timeless statement piece that will surely draw exclamations of surprise and admiration. Found in Santa Rosa, Laguna.

Jurong Bird Park, the largest one in the world. Taken with Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII.

*****************************

The Superb Starling (Lamprotornis superbus) is a member of the starling family of birds. It can commonly be found in East Africa, including Ethiopia, Somalia, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

This species is 18 to 19 cm (7–7.5 inches) long. Adults have black heads and iridescent blue-to-green back, upper breast, wings, and tail. The belly is red-orange, separated from the blue breast by a white bar. The undertail coverts and the wing linings are white. Juveniles have duller plumage with no more than a suggestion of the white breast band. Their irises are brown, later grayish white, eventually the adult's cream-color.

The Superb Starling has a long and loud song consisting of trills and chatters. At midday it gives a softer song of repeated phrases. There are several harsh calls, the most complex of which is described as "a shrill, screeching skerrrreeee-cherrrroo-tcherreeeeeet."

This species feeds on the ground. (Wikipedia)

*****************************

this afternoon i found this little guy on my patio. he was a little upset but not too stressed now that he's had some food and a dish of cream. he has no tail, is very probably male (but won't let me check to be sure) and is very affectionate. he's met a couple of the neighbourhood cats who dropped by to visit and they all seem to get along decently, so he may have been living with other cats. he wants in my apartment but i've set him up with a comfortable bed and he's found a few nooks in the woodpile and among the plants to hide in.

i've put an ad up on craigslist and attempted to do the same on kijiji (but that site is screwy as hell for me when i want to post - anyone who is a wizard there, please feel free to contact me). hopefully we'll get this guy back home before long. if any of you locals recognise him (or would like to have a very affectionate cat in your home), please get in touch. i've nicknamed him swayback for the moment as he crouches and walks a little oddly - he may have a rear hip or leg problem but it's not bad as he can jump up on my benches easily.

update: i just found out he belongs to a neighbour and he's not an outdoor cat. unfortunately i haven't seen him in a few days, but apparently he was recently spotted so he may get home soon. his name is sailor and he was last seen on salisbury avenue.

final update: sailor's back home after his adventure. a neighbour a block away found him and called his humans, i just found out. good news at last.

From My Blog

I had a series of about 8 shots of this Itsukushima Shrine scene and all I had to do was layer the 0 EV exposure onto the +2 EV exposure and paint the bright areas through on the left side of the photograph and I would have had a quick shot that was natural and pleasing to my senses… No, I had to go and create an HDR version on top of the two other exposures, create a couple of other layers for different colors, LucisArt, and a few filters so I could selectively add them to each area. I seriously spent 2 hours trying to figure out were I was going with this and completely hated it, I was about to just trash it when I found the perfect Nik filter that suddenly created a look that I was happy with.

Adena was the 2000-acre estate of Thomas Worthington (1773-1827), sixth governor of Ohio and one of the state's first United States Senators. The mansion house, completed in 1806-1807, has been restored to look much as it did when the Worthington family lived there, including many original Worthington family furnishings.

The house is one of only three houses designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe still standing in the country. Latrobe is considered the first professional American architect and served as architect of the U.S.capitol under President Thomas Jefferson.

Situated on the 300 remaining acres of the original homeplace are five outbuildings and formal gardens. The gardens have undergone major renovation. Visitors may stroll through three terraces of flowers and vegetables, as well as the shrubs and trees in the grove. Looking east from the north lawn of the mansion, one can see across the Scioto River Valley to the Logan Range. This view was the inspiration for the Great Seal of the State of Ohio.

A new Museum and Education Center features interactive exhibits that use the stories of people connected to Adena to give visitors a picture of life in Ohio in the early 1800s as well as classrooms, meeting and rental space.

The Vickers Vimy was designed as a long-range bomber capable of delivering a one ton payload to central Germany. Deliveries to the RAF began in October 1918, just too late to see operational use in World War One. However, pioneering flights across the Atlantic, from England to Australia and London to Cape Town would ensure its place in aviation history.Brooklands Museum - Explore

This modern reproduction was commissioned by Peter McMillan in 1994 to re-enact the type’s three long distance flights of 1919-20. Its first flight was made in California on the 30th July 1994. In 1994 it flew the epic 75th anniversary flight to Australia, piloted by Peter McMillan and Lang Kidby. In 1999 it successfully flew to South Africa, piloted by Mark Rebholz and John LaNoue and on 2nd -3rd July 2005, the Vimy achieved the ultimate goal when Steve Fossett and Mark Rebholz successfully re-enacted Alcock & Brown’s trans-Atlantic flight from St Johns, Newfoundland to Clifden, Ireland, in just under 19 hours.

In 2006 ownership passed to the American ISTAT Foundation and the aeroplane was maintained to airworthy standards at Dunsfold Park by Brooklands Museum volunteers. It was finally donated to Brooklands Museum Trust on 26th August 2006.

Since 2006 the Vimy has represented Brooklands at a number of occasions including the Farnborough Airshow, the Goodwood Revival and the 2009 Connemara Airshow in Ireland to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of Alcock and Brown flying the Atlantic. The decision was taken to retire the aircraft from flying (see the full reasons on our Vimy Retirement page) and on the 15th November 2009, its last flight was to the grass landing strip at Mercedes-Benz World. See a 10 minute film by Andy Lambert of the arrival at www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHPe79Bhvb4. The Vimy was subsequently taken by road to the Wellington Hangar at the Museum on the 19th November - see Andy Lambert’s film of this at www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjepleZp7vI. The Vimy Exhibition was formally opened by Peter McMillan at the Museum’s Vimy Day on the 21st November 2009.

I don't remember where we were when I took this, but I do remember it was one of those "organic" panos. That is, I started with a vertical shot of the windswept ridge, thinking to do a 4 or 5 shot pano of just the top of the ridge. I then thought to myself that it would be cool to get Haley (who was ahead of me a ways) in the shot. So my 4 image pano became a 12 image one, and I got this.

122 MP, 12 shots handheld, 7D.

A Mais Bela Flor

Querendo ver-me livre do garoto com sua flor, fingi pálido sorriso e me virei.

I feel totally disconnected from these photographs I've been doing. Aside from the one of my feet in the bathtub from last week, I don't feel like I'm putting anything at all into my art. I want to take it to the next level, take photos with conviction and have them mean something to me and make writings to go along with them. Having trouble expressing myself since I know a lot of my family looks at my photo stream. Those of you that make risque and/or emotional work, how do you deal with not censoring yourself...how can we over the hurdle of judgment from people who may not appreciate or understand work we make?

So the other day one of my good friends Rachel contacted me and asked me to take some photos for her. And of course I accepted the offer.

So this morning (Saturday) I woke up at 7 AM with a light headache from the cheap beer from last night. (damn you bud light!) Went out to Walmart to grab some foam white boards and batteries. I was all set for the shoot.

We started to shoot at around 8 AM. The sun wasn't as strong as I thought it would be, although I kinda wished that we would have scheduled it a little bit earlier. But then again, all of us wouldn't even show up.

The group consisted of 5 lovely girls, each one with their own personalities. I had a great time and so did they. Having fun when taking photos makes it so much easier. Also when they are comfortable around me and not shy or anything. That helps a lot!

Overall I had a blast!

I'll post a few more photos from the shoot. I hope you enjoy them!

I guess you can say this is my first "official' shoot.

Minsk is one of the oldest towns in Eastern Europe. First mention was in 1067 as a town of the Duchy of Polock. Minsk is now the capital and largest city in Belarus, situated on the Svislach and Niamiha rivers. It has stood for over 900 years. However most of Minsk has been rebuilt after it was reduced to rubble by the Nazi's during World War II.

The historical centre was replaced in the 1940s and 1950s by Stalinist architecture, which favoured grand buildings, broad avenues and wide squares. All the buildings of Minsk downtown were created in different years. But all of them are unified in architecture composition. Minsk is reminiscent of the Soviet era with its prominent KGB building, and Soviet images and symbols lining its streets.

The Cathedral of Morelia is a religious compound headquarters of the Archdiocese of Morelia of the Catholic Church in Mexico. It is located as the name itself says it in the city of Morelia, capital of Michoacan, Mexico. The cathedral is located on the first frame of the city, forming the trace of the Historic Center of Morelia. The building was built in the eighteenth century the Spanish colonial times, is in Baroque style and is made of pink quarry which gives it a distinctive and characteristic color.

# Architecturally, the Cathedral of Morelia compared against other Cathedrals in Mexico is similar to the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City, Puebla Cathedral, and even inside the Cathedral of Guadalajara.

# The cathedral is the most emblematic and representative buildings of Morelia given their height, since it has two tall towers that can be seen throughout the valley of the city. For his height, the towers of the Catedral de Morelia (66.8 m) are the fourth highest in Mexico after the towers of the Sanctuary of Guadalupe (Cathedral Unfinished) in Zamora de Hidalgo (105 m) of the cathedral in Villahermosa (80 m) and the Sanctuary of Guadalupe, San Luis Potosi (68 m).

# Has a unique scenic beauty lighting placed by the company that lit the Eiffel Tower in Paris. On weekends, the cathedral offers a sound and light show with this lighting.

# The cathedral is dedicated to the Transfiguration and its interior houses two highly venerated image, Sacred Heart of Jesus who is the patron saint of the city, and the Lord of the Sacristy a Christ very old paste made of cornstalks. Which is much visited and loved by the congregation.

# Its beautiful architecture and history are other reasons why it has become an icon of the city.

# Inside this enclosure because of its beauty, sound and spacious sound, set for a variety of artistic and cultural events as the International Organ Festival in Morelia, and the International Music Festival of Morelia.

The current cathedral of Morelia was not the only cathedral in the city has had since 1580, when civil and ecclesiastical powers were transferred from Patzcuaro Michoacan to Valladolid (Morelia previous name), opened a cathedral, much lower the current size and artistic value. That building was located on the corner of the present streets of Corregidor and Abasolo. However, due to growth experienced by the city at the end of s. Sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, and because of a fire in 1584 severely affected the former cathedral building, it became necessary to think of another temple, larger, robust and important. That is why at the beginning of s. XVII the cathedral chapter began efforts to build the new cathedral.

Many projects were proposed, but until mid-century the project was accepted by the Italian architect Vincenzo Barrochio, also known as the Plaster Vicente Barroso by the Viceroy Francisco Fernandez de la Cueva, Duke of Albuquerque on March 22, 1660 concluding continuous procedures and construction projects over a long period of almost 80 years.

On May 6, 1660 the first stone of the building was laid by Bishop Fray Marcos Ramírez del Prado. The building itself was given by Vicenzo Barrochio until his death in 1692, why the great architect could not see completed his monumental work. However, only 52 years after the death of the teacher, his pupils got through the daunting task of architecture, so that the magnificent work was completed in 1744.

The cathedral suffered several raids by the army for independence, in the year 1810. By the end of the nineteenth century built the perimeter fence that marks the atrium. In the late 90s of the twentieth century restoration work carried out various internal and external, thereby better preserved the beauty of the building. Also, in the early twenty-first century, opened the new stage lighting of the cathedral of Morelia.

Minchinbury takes its name from the property named by Capt. William Minchin who was granted 1,000 acres (4.0 km2) here in 1819. William Minchin was the Principal Superintendent of Police and Treasurer of the Police Fund in the colony. After the death of William in 1821, the property passed to his only daughter Maria Matilda. In 1838, Maria Matilda and her family were lost at sea, leaving no descendants of William Minchin alive.

Dr. Charles McKay purchased the property in 1859 and developed it into vineyards and cellars. Over the next 2 decades, Dr. McKay bought many neighbouring properties and in 1881, he put all of his land up for auction. At this time, the land did not sell and it wasn't until 1895 that James Angus bought all of McKay's properties.

Penfolds Pty. Ltd. purchased the winery and vineyards in 1912. Most of the existing buildings at the winery were probably added while under the ownership of Penfolds. In 1898, during Angus' winemaking years, the vineyards suffered a viral disease that destroyed the vines. New vines were planted and grew until 1962 when soil erosion made them useless. New vineyards were established on other properties around the area to supply the fruit for the winery. Minchinbury Winery became famous for its champagne. Penfolds stopped operations at the winery in 1978

From the parish website:

Since 1834, The Parish Church of St. Luke has been a place of worship for Anglicans in Halton County. Chief Joseph Brant gave the land for church use and his daughter, Elizabeth Kerr, supported the founding of St. Luke's. The parish has continued this legacy of tradition while meeting the needs of the contemporary world.

At the turn of the 19th century there were no Anglican churches in Halton County, the nearest being Ancaster. The Diocese, of which it was part, stretched from Quebec to the shores of Lake Huron and Lake Erie in the west. It was under the jurisdiction of the first Anglican Bishop of Quebec, The Right Reverend Jacob Mountain.

About this time, a steady influx of immigrants from the United Kingdom began to settle in isolated communities. Their only contact with any form of organized religion was with Methodist preachers who used the stump of a tree for a pulpit, and a clearing for their church.

Baptists and other sects were also round and about, and those back woodsmen liked to hear a "Hell Fire" preacher. There were few Anglican clergymen, and their old style system of Anglicanism was not too well accepted in the new world. What clergymen there were, came mostly from England. A great debt is owed Trinity College, Dublin, for many of its graduates served Upper Canada. They were considered the best, because of their willingness to remain at their posts amidst the most primitive conditions.

It was not until the 1830's that the Church of England became in any way extensive in Halton County when they began in earnest to wage their contest for souls. The Diocese, then under Bishop Charles J. Stewart, was assisted in its missionary endeavours by the Stewart missions, which was organized by his nephew. They provided funds for travelling missionaries and made possible the work of such men as Adam Elliot, William McMurray, Thomas Greene, and many others. The record of achievements is a magnificent one, for these men were just as indefatigable as any Methodist itinerant.

The ultimate result was the birth of the first Anglican Church in Halton County. St. Luke's is the oldest church in Burlington. The land which St. Luke's is built on was given to Joseph Brant, the famous Mohawk leader, for his services to British-Canadian forces during the American Revolution. Brant, who had been an Anglican since the age of twenty, gave the land to his daughter, Elizabeth. She, in turn, donated the land for the construction of a church, the first of its kind in the area.

The original church building was completed in the Fall of 1834, and was consecrated (dedicated) in 1838. The first Rector was the Reverend Doctor Thomas Greene, who remained at St. Luke's for forty years. Doctor Greene, and several other Rectors of St. Luke's are buried in the cemetery. In over 165 years, St. Luke's has only had ten Rectors, several of whom have gone on to become Bishops.

St. Luke's has many stained glass windows, showing scenes from the Bible and many Saints, including St. Luke, of course. The Arms of The Parish Church of St. Luke, includes the "winged ox" representing St. Luke, waves, which symbolized the waters of Baptism, and a St. George Cross, which represents the first Christian.

I was killing time waiting for a concert to start when I came across St. Luke’s brightly lit against the night. I didn't have a tripod with me, so made do by holding my camera on the ground and hoping my hands didn’t shake too much.
