Like so many others, Colonel Hardee Murfree was given a land grant by the United States Government for his service in the American Revolution but Murfree remained in North Carolina rather than move to frontier Tennessee. His daughter, Sally, and her husband, Dr. James Maney, inherited the land and built a log cabin on the land. Sally died in 1857 as the home passed to son, Lewis, and his wife, Rachel Adeline Maney, who was the daugter of Tennessee Governor, Newton Canon.
Under ownership of Lewis and Adeline the house underwent four additions and extensive renovation including this Italianate front facade which you see in the picture. This was the fourth addition to the house which extends to the rear and is not in view. This addition included two formal parlors, Guest rooms, and formal dining area. The large wrap around veranda with chamferred arches and columns is its most prominent feature.
The house entertained such guests as oceanographer, Mathew Fontaine Maury; 1860 Presidential candidate, John Bell (buried at Mount Olivet cemetery); Sarah Polk, wife of US President James K. Polk, and Confederate States President, Jefferson Davis...... Then came the war.
The town of Murfreesboro changed hands several times in 1862. In July, 1862, a Federal detachment of 1,000 troops occupied Murfreesboro a portion of which under the command of Colonel William Duffield (9th Michigan Infantry Regiment) was encamped near the spring which lies to the right of this photo.
On July 13, 1862, Confederate Cavalry under the command of General Nathan Bedford Forrest raided Murfreesboro attacking all Federal positions including the Rutherford County Courthouse where Confederate prisoners were being held. The fighting came to Oaklands where a skirmish took place on the Oaklands front lawn and was witnessed by the Maney children from the second floor window in the center of the house (arched window). During the skirmish, Duffield was shot and wounded. He was carried inside the Oaklands where the Maneys nursed him back to health. The Federal detachment surrendered the town of Murfreesboro back to the Confederates inside Oaklands. The town would ramin in Confederate hands until the major battle of Stones River (Dec. 31 , 1862 - Jan. 2, 1863) - a battle of over 80,000 combatants and 24,000 casualties. Murfreesboro would remain under Federal control for the remainder of the war.
Of course, with the end of the war came the end of slavery and plantations such as Oaklands was dependent upon slavery for its sustainence. As a matter of fact, slaves physically built the mansion and made the very brick utilized. Eventually, Adeline was forced to sell portions of the property to pay off debt and was forced to move (to a smaller mansion - poor girl). ONe piece of property sold became Evergreen cemetery from which I have taken a few photos.
By the 1960's the mansion was abandoned and in complete and utter ruin. The roof had caved in and the house was in deplorable shape. It has since been restored and is open to the public for tours.
Oh, that Colonel Duffield who was shot in skirmish on the front lawn - he recovered from his wounds and sent the Maney's a set of silverware, pitcher, etc. as an appreciation for their hospitality.

JEAN-BAPTISTE GODIN ( ENGLISH )
Jean-Baptiste André Godin (26 January 1817 -29 January 1888) was a French industrialist and social experimentor born on the 26th of January 1817 at Esquéhéries (Aisne).
The son of an artisan, he entered an iron-works at an early age, and at seventeen made a tour of France as journeyman. Returning to Esquéhéries in 1837, he started a small factory for the manufacture of castings for heating-stoves. The business increased rapidly, and for the purpose of railway facilities was transferred to Guise in 1846. At the time of Godin's death in 1888 the annual output was over four millions of francs (4,160,000), and in 1908 the employees numbered over 2000 and the output was over 280,000.
An ardent disciple of Charles Fourier, he advanced a considerable sum of money towards the disastrous Fourierist experiment of V. P. Considerant (q.v.) in Texas (known as La Reunion. He profited, however, by its failure, and in 1859 started the Familistère, or community settlement, of Guise on more carefully laid plans.
The Familistère forms a town within the town of Guise. It comprises, in addition to a large factory, three large buildings, each four stories high, capable of housing all the work-people, each family having two or three rooms. The main building consists of three rectangular blocks joined at the corners. Each of these blocks has a central court covered with a glass roof under which children can play in all weather. There is no church of any sort. (There are, of course, churches within the rest of Guise). At the back of the main block there was a nursery. There is a separate block, known as the "economat", containing various shops, refreshment rooms and recreation rooms of various kinds(?), stores for the purchase of groceries, drapery and every necessity. This has recently (2008) been restored and is now a cafe, a shop selling books, postcards etc and an exhibition area. There were also allotments for the workers.
Opposite the main block there was a building containing a theater for concerts and dramatic entertainments and a primary school. There was also a communal laundry and swimming pool. This was a few years ago derelict but has now been restored. The swimming pool is still a swimming poll but the laundry is a meeting room and the drying room is now (2008) an exhibition room. In 1880 the whole was turned into a co-operative society, with provision by which it eventually became the property of the workers.
Godin manufactured cookers and heating stoves of many kinds mainly made from cast iron castings. Sometimes these were enameled. These are still to be found in use all over France. They can be found for sale on eBay.
This business was still owned by the workers in the 1950s but soon after was taken over by Le Creuset. It is not obvious that the factory is still functioning. It is seems the domestic building were privatised. The state of the domestic buildings was deteriorating but has recently been awarded EU money for it to be restored.
In 1871 Godin was elected deputy for Aisne, but retired in 1876 to devote himself to the management of the Familistère. In 1882 he was created a Knight of the Legion of Honor.
Godin was the author of Solutions sociales (1871); Les Socialistes et les Droits du travail (1874); Mutualité sociale et association du capital et du travail (1880); La Republique du travail et la reforme parlementaire (1889). The Marmora Mine
Marmora is located between the towns of Madoc and Havelock along highway 7 in Hastings County. The name Marmora is taken from the latin word for "marble".
The area was known for its rich iron content and mining operations began as early as the 1820's to extract and smelt this mineral. Today you will find the remains of the water-powered refinery along the eastern bank of the Crowe River while the northern bank of the Crowe held the richest ore deposits.
At its prime, the area was home to as many as two dozen mines. Perhaps the most successful of the mines was that of the Marmoraton which opened in 1955. The Marmoraton was owned by Bethlehem Steel Mills of New York and exported iron ore pellets.
In 1953, before the Marmoraton could open, engineers first had to blast through 120 feet of limestone before reaching the high grade ore which was underneath. One blasted out, the open pit mine measured approximately 1700 feet by 1200 feet and reached 600 feet deep.
The mine employed some 300 men who worked to fill the 30 to 35 railway cars daily for transport south to Picton port where it was loaded into boats. The mine produced 520,000 tons of pellets anually.
When the mine closed in 1979, it had mined almost 1.3 million tons of iron ore. Over time, underground streams and rainfall have slowly filled two thirds of the mine with water. So much so that it is now officially classified as a lake.

The hills are located about 60 km north of Bangalore and about 3940 ft above sea level.
Sir Mark Cubbon, when he was Commissioner of Bangalore made this his summer residence. Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Queen Elizabeth II were among the other dignitaries who enjoyed their stay here.
You can visit this place at any time of the year. Its best if you are on top of the hill before sunrise. The wind, fog and clouds that blow towards you in the morning is just amazing.

Casa de Campo de Madrid (Spain)
La Casa de Campo fue propiedad histórica de la Corona Española y coto de caza de la realeza. Tras la proclamación de la Segunda República, fue cedida por el Estado al pueblo de Madrid (1 de mayo de 1931), estando desde entonces abierta al público.
En su interior se encuentran situadas diversas instalaciones, como el Parque de Atracciones, el Zoológico, el Teleférico (que conecta la Casa de Campo con el Parque del Oeste, al otro lado del río Manzanares), parte de los recintos feriales de IFEMA (Institución Ferial de Madrid), el pabellón multiusos Madrid Arena, la Venta del Batán (lugar tradicional de encierro de los toros en los días previos a su lidia en la Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas) y diferentes instalaciones deportivas populares.

Port Meadow is a large area of common land to the north and west of Oxford. The meadow is an ancient area of grazing land, still used for horses and cattle, and has never been ploughed. In return for helping to defend the kingdom against the marauding Danes, the Freemen of Oxford were given the 120ha of pasture next to the River Thames by King Alfred, who founded the City in the 10th Century. The Freemen's collective right to graze their animals free of charge was recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086 and has been exercised ever since.
It runs from Jericho to Wolvercote along the east (left) bank of the River Thames, with the railway and the suburb of North Oxford further to the east, and the village of Binsey to the west. It is a typical English floodmeadow and is a favourite area for walking, with easy access from the city of Oxford. At the southern end of the meadow is Fiddler's Island in a loop of the river Thames. In the winter the meadow floods and, if frozen, forms a huge and safe area for skating. In late spring vast areas are carpeted with buttercups. Horses, cattle and geese graze the meadow and many birds can often be seen.

El tarro blanco es una ave llamativa con aspecto intermedio entre pato y ganso. Tiene el pico rojo, la cabeza y la parte superior del cuello verde oscuro, y el resto del cuerpo blanco, con una franja pectoral de color castaño y plumaje negro en escapulares, rémiges, punta de la cola y línea del vientre.
Los dos sexos son similares, pero la hembra tiene tonos más apagados. El macho presenta una protuberancia en la base del pico en la época reproductora.
Distribución
El tarro blanco cría en la zona templada de Eurasia. La mayoría de las poblaciones emigran a zonas subtropicales en invierno, pero reside permanentemente en amplias zonas costeras del oeste de Europa, aparte de movimientos hacia zonas más seguras en la época de muda, como el mar de Frisia en la costa del norte de Alemania y los Países Bajos.
En la Península Ibérica, el tarro blanco es invernante, pero anida esporádicamente en algunas zonas. Ocupa zonas costeras y también lagunas y embalses del interior.
Comportamiento y hábitat
La mayoría de las parejas abandonan a sus crías antes de que alcancen su completo desarrollo y se marchan a lugares seguros y tranquilos junto al mar en la época de muda. En dicha época, los tarros (al igual que otros patos) pierden sus plumas rémiges, lo que los hace muy vulnerables a sus depredadores, pues les impide volar hasta que les salen las nuevas. Los pollos quedan agrupados en "guarderías", al cuidado de unas pocas hembras.
El tarro blanco habita estuarios, costas someras y orillas de lagos interiores salinos en terrenos abiertos. Se alimenta de moluscos, pequeños crustáceos, insectos y pequeñas cantidades de materia vegetal.

(Better posers) I grabbed 2 and proceeded to the checkout with my groceries. The checker asked who the Barbies were for, IDK why I did it people, but I lied and said they were for my nieces, thinking that would be the end of it. OH NO! Not to happen. Next comes the interrogation! How old are your Nieces? Where do they live?, Do they go tho School with so-n-so?, Do they watch Top Model?... OMG I wanted to shrink!
The moral of the story is, Dont Do It People.... One lie leads to another and another and another....;-)

Lee was born in Seoul, Korea in 1960. He attended Sunhwa Art High School and received a B.F.A. in Sumi-e painting and drawing from HongIk, University, Seoul, and an M.F.A. from the National University of Tokyo Arts and Sciences, Japan.
Lee was active in the resistance movement during the reign of South Korean military dictator President Park and lost many friends during the reign of terror leading up to Park's assassination in 1979. Lee immigrated to Japan in 1988, where he would spend the next ten years establishing himself as a leading contemporary artist.
Lee has been featured in group and solo shows throughout museums and galleries in Japan and Korea, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and the Kawasaki City Museum. Since moving to New York in 1999, he has exhibited at the Sonoma Museum of Visual Arts, CA, the Hammond Museum, NY, the Korean Embassy, Washington, DC, the Japan American Art Association at the Tenri Gallery, NY, the International Art Festival Lantern of the East, Los Angeles, CA, and more.
Lee has lectured in Japanese and Korean universities on "Oriental Sensation and Neo-postmodernism" and "Contemporary Visual Art and Psychology." He is a tenured instructor of Sumi-e, oil painting and drawing at the Nakano Art Center, Japan, and currently teaches Sumi-e painting at the National Jewish Council Center, NY. He is a member of the New Century Artists, NY, the Japanese Artists Association, NY, the Korean Japanese Exchange Art Association, Tokyo, and the Japan International Art Group, Tokyo.
About the work
Jongwang Lee's massive, liquid paintings, rendered with a complex and precise mixture of resin, oil paint and pigments, express the artist's quest for a balance between the spiritual and the physical worlds. Examining the proverbial return to the womb, Lee paints human forms that float in a watery substance and inhabit a world before time.
Ironically, Lee's spiritual quest has resulted in a series of sculptural paintings that evoke opulent, overgrown gemstones. One has the illusion of gazing deep into a cross-section of colored and decorated amber, peering into the past through layers of time.
While Lee's recent work has a contemporary Pop Art sensibility-with its day glow colors and bold compositions-his influences are drawn from 5,000 years of Korean history. "My work is Oriental. I am influenced by Korean Sumi-e brush painting and Eastern philosophies, as well as by my experiences in the West," says the artist.
Lee begins each painting with an underpinning of a linear web. The lines act as a link to another place, bridging spiritual and earthly realms. Next, he layers the temperamental resin mixture with additional layers. The resin dries at various times, depending on the thickness of the paint mixture and how it is applied.
"I have wrestled with this devilish resin for nearly 20 years," says Lee. "After many experiments and many failings, I now know how to negotiate it."
Artist Statement
My artwork is a visualization of man's alienation from his soul in this highly materialistic, technological society.
My paintings are infused with symbolism drawn from 5,000 years of Korean history. In the past, Shamans used several kinds of rope placed around the ceremonial area to communicate with the soul world. The linear elements in my paintings echo the role of the Shaman's ropes. They are a connection between the spirit world and reality. On another level, they represent a connection between people.
My grandmother was a famous Shaman in Korea. During my childhood I was deeply impacted by her performances and felt a strong contact with the spiritual world. This early experience has been an important source of inspiration for my art. Eastern philosophies and Western experiences have deeply influenced my work.
For six years I studied traditional Korean Sumi-e painting, learning from the old masters. Before that time, I had already begun to develop new techniques, experimenting with both oriental and western materials. Using a palette knife, a trowel and other less conventional tools, I have created my own original art form.
Moving to the US has felt like a rebirth for me. I believe many immigrants feel like this when they come to a new country, On one hand, I want to retreat to the familiar, safe, comfortable place of my own history and birth country, akin to returning to the womb. But, at the same time, I want to be reborn, in a sense, to enjoy the freedom and the cultural and political climate of the US.
I hope that my work encourages people to look within themselves and realize the unbelievable power of life and the dormant potential within each of us.

Film loading: The film take-up system is unique as it ignores sprocket holes on 35mm film. Instead it winds the film onto a fat take-up spool like a drum. No account is taken of the increasing diameter of this spool as film is wound onto it, resulting in increasingly wide gaps between the frames on a roll. Modern automated negative cutting will not adjust for the unique frame layout, and negatives and slides must be ordered from labs uncut.

This type 1b is a rare one. With type 1a this camera is earliest so far known productional version of Leningrad.
Built very sturdily, and to a very high degree of precision (unlike most Soviet rangefinders), the Leningrad is said to be the most advanced (and expensive) Soviet rangefinder ever made. Many were given as presents to party members and visiting dignitaries. At the 1958 World Exposition in Brussels, the Leningrad was awarded the "Grand Prix de Bruxelles”. Modified Leningrads were used in the Soviet space program.
Note: If Leningrad suddenly decides not to advance the film after you've taken try turning the shutter speed dial slightly counterclockwise against spring tension, then letting it snap back. Often this will release the mechanism and let the film advance to the next frame. And since (as noted above) there's no alternate manual way to advance the film, you'd better hope this trick works!

I tend to envision everything literally... so I've had this line from a song in my head, and this image came up. Seemed do-able, and I've been looking to play with some fake blood.
Once I got this together, I thought, "I wonder if anybody would pull the song and/or band?"
So, how's about it? Care to guess?
I give it 50/50 odds... over the next couple of days, if nobody should get it, I'll post hints. I figure if nobody gets it after 3 or 4 days, most of my contacts that were going to see it would've seen it. At that time I'll post the line in the title, full lyrics in the description below.

- this is a band that has been on the raido, at least in the DC area. They've got a national presence, so not some local band you've probably never heard of. I don't listen to music on the radio anymore, but I do know that at least two of their singles got lots of air play in 2003 and in 2005.

- They had a song featured on one of the Rockband games.
- All of their albums revolve around a single concept. This concept is also a comic book, written by the lead singer.
- They recently released their 5th studio album, which is to be the last of the concept, and it is considered a prequel to the first 4.

-blood is corn syrup, water, chocolate syrup, red dye, blue dye. Need to work on the recipe. I was fairly happy with the color, but the consistency kind of sucked. Though, to be fair to myself, I have no idea how blood behaves smeared on a knife.
-For the knife, I actually did this in several steps. I did a shot with a butter knife to get the effect a knife might have actually cutting my lip. Then I took several shots of the chef's knife gently resting on my lip, and some of just the knife out in space. I used one of the latter to replace the butter knife. The sad part is that some of the shots with the chef's knife on my lip looked at least as convincing, even though it wasn't pressed that hard.
-I wish there was a way to do a 'free transform' in gimp. Instead you have to scale, rotate, move, in separate actions.
-text on knife is multiple layers, one blurred, both set to... multiply, I think. I flipped back and forth between using a font, Ultimately decided to use my own handwriting. Should've gone with a font.
-The hardest part was selecting my fat head out of the background. Using the paths tool would've been my method of choice, except for my hair. I made a B&W layer of the image, played around with brightness, contrast, levels... purpose was to get it to the point where I could get the subject to be mostly white against a mostly black background. Especially the hair. I used that as a mask and cut the background out. This was my first time using the technique. I couldn't get it quite right. And on some areas, the blue didn't quite come out. For those areas, since it was black hair, I selected a small area on the edge of the hair and desaturated it.

I SHOOT IT AT GANGASAGAR MELA(FAIR).
Gangasagar Mela is the largest fair celebrated in West Bengal(INDIA). This fair is held where the Ganga and the Bay of Bengal form a nexus. Hence the name Gangasagar Mela. This festival is celebrated during January every year and is a major attraction for millions of piligrams from all over India.
The pilgrims come for a holy dip on Makar Sankranti (last day of the Bengali Month) Negha -Mid January. They take dips in the Ganges and offer water to the Sun God. The dip, as they say, purifies their 'self' and according to them, 'punya' can be obtained thus. When they are done with the ritual obligations, they head towards the Kapilmuni Temple situated nearby, to worship the deity as a mark of respect.
In every year in the time of fair,some poor local people temporarily build up a tent with plastic & bamboo to beg with their child from the men who came here to obtain "punya" (accumulate of religious merits).

The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is a species of lizard that inhabits the islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Gili Dasami, in central Indonesia. A member of the monitor lizard family (Varanidae), it is the largest living species of lizard, growing to an average length of 2–3 meters (approximately 6.5–10 ft) and weighing around 70 kilograms (154 lb). Their unusual size is attributed to island gigantism, since there are no other carnivorous mammals to fill the niche on the islands where they live, and also to the Komodo dragon's low metabolic rate. As a result of their size, these lizards are apex predators, dominating the ecosystems in which they live. Although Komodo dragons eat mostly carrion, they will also hunt and ambush prey including invertebrates, birds, and mammals.
Komodo dragons possess virulent bacteria in their saliva, of which more than 28 Gram-negative and 29 Gram-positive strains have been isolated. These bacteria cause septicemia in their victim; if an initial bite does not kill the prey animal and it escapes, it will commonly succumb within a week to the resulting infection. The deadliest bacteria in Komodo dragon saliva appears to be a very deadly strain of Pasteurella multocida, from studies performed with lab mice. Because the Komodo dragon appears immune to its own microbes, much research has been done searching for the antibacterial molecule in the hopes of human medicinal use.

I am one of the last 7 survivors of my subspecies in the world,
the Northern White Rinoceros / Nördliches Breitmaulnashorn (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) - Large On Black
The northern white rhinoceros or northern square-lipped rhinoceros , is one of the two subspecies of the white rhinoceros. This subspecies is a grazer in grasslands and savanna woodlands which formerly ranged over parts of northwestern Uganda, southern Chad, southern South Sudan, the eastern part of Central African Republic, and northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Due to wars and massive poaching, these animals are now feared to be extinct in the wild.
There are currently seven left in captivity. Initially, six northern white rhinoceros lived in the Dvur Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic. Four of the six rhinos - which are also the only reproductive animals of this subspecies - were transported to Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, Africa, where scientists hope they will successfully breed and save this subspecies from extinction. One of two remaining in the Czech Republic died in late May 2011. The two other rhinos presently live at the San Diego Wild Animal Park in California.

The last male rhino of this subspecies had to be put to sleep in Ol Pejeta Conservancy because it was too weak and old to get on his feet again, He was the last Northern White Rhino to be born in the wild in 1973.
"With the death of the 45-year-old Sudan, the Earth’s entire northern white rhino population is now down to two — Sudan’s daughter, Najin, and his granddaughter, Fatu. Both females also live at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
The death of Sudan resonates in a major way in San Diego. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park was home to Nola, a female northern white rhino who died in November 2015 at age 41, leaving Sudan, Najin and Fatu to represent the subspecies. The Safari Park’s other northern white rhino, a male named Angalifu, died in December 2014 at age 44."

I think this picture doesn't show "Sudan" but one of his younger relatives. One of the two "girls" that are left today.

The birth of a Francis Henry H Brine was recorded in the Blything District that then covered Southwold, in the January to March 1907 quarter.
The marriage of a Francis H H Brine to a Joan M Brace took place in the East Glamorgan District of Glamorganshire in the October to December 1939 quarter.
Operation Supercharge, the final phase of the Second Battle of El Alamein, had opened on the 2nd November, and although it was a battle mainly of attrition, it was the Allies, closer to the supply bases, who could afford to endure.
A feel for what the battalion had gone through can be gathered from this article. Like the soldier that it is about. Francis could possibly have been wounded in the same action on the 24th October but may not have been so lucky.

HMS Gloucester (Capt. H.A. Rowley, DSO, RN) was sunk in the Eastern Mediterranean in the Antikythera Channel, north west of Crete in position 35.50N, 23.00E by German Ju-88 and Ju-87 bombers during the German invasion of Crete.
The commanding officer Capt. Rowley, 45 officers and 648 more men were killed when she sank.

There doesn’t appear to be a likely match for an Alfred Edward in the GRO index of births for the likely age range for him to have been serving in 1940. There is an Alfred Louis, who’s birth was registered in the Mutford District of Suffolk in the July to September quarter of 1902 as well as an Ernest Alfred who’s birth was recorded in the Ipswich District in the April to June 1903 quarter.
HMS Acheron (Lt. J.R. Wilson, RN) was mined off the Isle of Wright on 17 December 1940. She was running trials after completing repairs following the bomb damage sustained on 24 August. The trial was being conducted at night, with heavy seas running and a strong NE wind in complete darkness.
During one of the passes on the measured mile, 8 nm WSW of St. Catherine's Point, Isle of Wight,she struck a mine towards the bows, her own speed driving her under; she sank within 4 minutes, killing 196 crewmen and yard workers on board for the trials, only 19 survived. The mine is believed to have been one of those laid by the Luftwaffe in no definite pattern along the Channel coast. The wreck lies in 48 meters of water in position 50.32N, 01.26W.

The Regiment was formed as 4th Regiment Royal Horse Artillery (RHA) at Helmieh, Egypt in May 1939. The original Batteries were C Battery, F (Sphinx) Battery, and G Battery (Mercers Troop), drawn from independent commands in India and equipped with the Ordnance QF 25 pounder.
Shortly after the outbreak of war in September 1939 the Regiment moved to Mersa Matruh in early 1940. 4th RHA fired the opening rounds of the campaign in North Africa against the Italians at Sidi Barrani on 8 December 1940. As part of the newly formed 7th Armoured Division, 4th RHA advanced westwards across the desert, seeing action again in January 1941 at Bardia, the capture of Tobruk, and at Beda Fomm.

While the rest of the Division and the Australians prepared to attack Bardia, 4th Armoured Brigade, attacked the by-passed Italian camp as Sidi Omar on 16th December 1940. 2nd RTR lead the attack from the west, with good artillery support by 4 RHA, and soon broke through the perimeter, in tactics not dissimilar to a Napoleonic cavalry charge. 7th Hussars and 'B' Squadron, 3rd Hussars soon joined in, with the battle lasting just 10 minutes. The Italian Fascist gunners, with their guns sited on the east of the position (to face where any assault was most likely) fired to little avail, while under bombardment from two batteries of 4 RHA the main attack had come in from the west and south. 900 Italian prisoners were taken with 50 being killed

On 27 April 1921 Thomas Henry Wale was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 58th (Essex and Sussex) Medium Brigade, RFA (TA) and was promoted to Lieutenant in 231st Battery, 58th (Essex and Sussex) Medium Brigade, RFA (TA) on 27 April 1923. He was promoted to Captain in the 58th (Suffolk) Medium Regiment on 23 August 1926. Sometime between September 1927 and April 1928 he joined the Reserve of Officers as a Captain. He was recalled to active duty on 10 May 1939. In September 1939 T. H. Wale was a Captain in 67th Medium Regiment, RA (TA) at Ipswich.

At 02.45 hours on 25 Aug, 1940, U-48 attacked the convoy HX-65A 90 miles east by north of Flannan Isles and sank the Athelcrest and Empire Merlin.
The Empire Merlin (Master David W. Simpson MBE) sank in 35 seconds. The master, 33 crew members and one gunner were lost. The sole survivor ordinary seaman John Lee was picked up by the British corvette HMS Godetia (K 72) (LtCdr G.V. Lagassisk) and landed at Methil.

There is a number of occurrences on the net of Master Simpson as neing the Skipper of SS Wandy, a merchantman which had attacked and sunk a German U-boat in WW1, (and for which presumably he got his MBE). However, there do not appear to be any other references to SS Wandy or any likely incident which led to the sinking off a U-boat. I also couldn’t find any mention of the award of the OBE in the London Gazette.

During the Second World War, Alexandria was again an important hospital centre, taking casualties from campaigns in the Western Desert, Greece, Crete, the Aegean Islands and the Mediterranean. Rest camps and hostels were also established there together with a powerful anti-aircraft base. Alexandria was also the communications centre for the middle and near east and became the headquarters of the Military Police. The cemetery at Hadra was extended for Second World War burials and was used from 1941.

It's the end of the year and OAD (aka Steve) posted this cool little piece that features the best meals of 2008 (and restaurants with potential) from a questionnaire sent out to some pretty well known chefs (at least ones that have made the 2007 OAD guide), food critics, notable food bloggers/destination diners, food scientists like Dr. This, and then... little ol' food enthusiast me. Granted my meal at Ristorante dal Pescatore was in the latter part of last year, it's impact still struck me until now (truth be told I was asked what my best meal was in the past year - which I interpreted as being full year, not just calender). Anyway, the mention of many Northern Europe (and a few American and Asian) restaurants has me mentally noting these establishments in the event I might have the fortune of visiting those areas. This is part one of two. :)

‘Tis the time of year for lists. After racking my brain to try and figure out what type of list people might like to read, I came up with the following idea. I sent out an email to an an assortment of chefs, food writers, restaurant owners and bloggers and I asked them the following questions:
1. Name the best meal that you had in 2008
2. Name the new chef or restaurant who showed the most potential in 2008
Their answers were quite illuminating. Or at least I thought they were. What I learned was that fine dining in Northern Europe is steadily improving and both chefs and diners are now traveling to countries like Germany, Austria, Holland and Denmark just to sample the restaurants. And Tokyo, because of the new Michelin Guide, is another city that is starting to become popular with Western diners. Let’s see if the same dynamic occurs in Hong Kong and Macau now that Michelin has published a guide to those cities as well. But I think the most important thing I learned is that there isn’t all that much difference between what the pros like and what the foodies like, and as you run down the list, you will see that they each cite many of the same places. Este es el tipo de edificios que me gusta encontrarme. Aquéllos con los que no cuentas, construcciones anónimas, que desconoces, que no están en los círculos de "visitas obligadas arquitectónicas", pero que aportan mucho al desarrollo de las ciudades y los pueblos.
Esto me paso la semana pasada en Tapia de Casariego (Asturias). Dando una vuelta por el paseo que bordea la costa, desde el puerto pesquero hasta la playa, me encontré esta pequeña "gran" obra. Un edificio que a simple vista se hace notar como "diferente". No por sus carísimos y distinguidos materiales, ni por sus formas atrevidas, sino por su racionalidad, ritmo, excelente empleo de los materiales y las técnicas constructivas. Un edificio de formas sencillas que destaca sobre todo por su "sinceridad arquitectónica", algo bastante difícil de apreciar en mucha de la nueva arquitectura que se hace en la actualidad (me refiero a esa arquitectura espectáculo, léase Santiago Calatrava, Zaha Hadid, Koolhaas y cía....)

La campaña contra el ingreso en prisión y la criminalización de los manteros atraviesa un momento crítico. Por eso, de forma urgente hemos elaborado este manifiesto en el que se os informa de la situación y se os invita a suscribirlo en concepto de asociación/colectivo social. Os quedaríamos muy agradecidos si le pudierais dar la máxima difusión. La urgencia es máxima, pues el próximo lunes entregaremos el manifiesto con las firmas que hasta entonces hayamos recogido.

Las asociaciones y colectivos del tejido social abajo firmantes queremos poner de manifiesto a la opinión pública:
I.- Hace unos meses constatábamos con perplejidad que más de medio millar de personas han sido encarceladas en el Estado por la mera circunstancia de exhibir y vender CD pirata. Detectamos entonces penas sorprendentes de prisión de hasta dos años y más: había “manteros” que veían prolongada su permanencia en prisión por no poder hacer frente a las magras responsabilidades civiles a las que se les condenaba y a las multas que se les imponían.
II.- De la mano de artistas, profesionales del Derecho, movimientos sociales y de los propios afectados iniciamos una Campaña con el objeto de eliminar del Código Penal la prisión para un tipo de comportamiento concreto movido por la necesidad de supervivencia que tiene mejor acomodo en el derecho administrativo sancionador. No se trata de legalizar el top-manta sino de perseguirlo por otros medios que no sean el encarcelamiento.
III.- Al mismo tiempo que apoyábamos indultos para las personas presas por esta causa y abonábamos multas y responsabilidades civiles para lograr la pronta excarcelación de los que peor lo pasaban, conectamos con los diferentes grupos parlamentarios y les hicimos partícipes de nuestro intento de proponer la modificación del Código Penal que avalamos con dictámenes jurídicos que fueron respaldados por numerosos profesores universitarios, juristas y ciudadanos en general.
IV.- El top manta no es la infracción que más gravemente perjudica al derecho de propiedad intelectual de los artistas; las mayores agresiones vienen de otros campos. Por otro lado, el propio legislador reconoce en el Preámbulo de la Ley que la reforma del año 2003 supuso una quiebra de la proporcionalidad respecto a la venta a pequeña escala y que los autores son personas en situación de necesidad y de pobreza, que sólo aspiran a alcanzar mínimos ingresos de subsistencia; se trata de personas que tienen prohibido legalmente ganarse la vida con un contrato legal que tratan de sobrevivir con los escasos ingresos de una actividad, ilegal, sí, pero de escaso daño social.
V.- Reconocemos que la mayoría de los grupos parlamentarios del Congreso han escuchado nuestras razones y que, aunque el texto aprobado por el Congreso no garantiza que por conductas tan nimias como la del “mantero” se meta en prisión a un ciudadano, dicha redacción supone una mejora respecto a la situación actual. Sin embargo, existe el peligro cierto de que estos avances se pierdan en el Senado. A consecuencia de la presión de las Sociedades Gestoras de los Derechos de Autor, Convergencia i Unio y el Grupo Parlamentario Popular han introducido una enmienda en el Senado de características represivas que supondría un gran retroceso. Se argumenta que tratar como falta los supuestos más nimios (cuando el beneficio no excede de 400 euros) constituye “un absoluto desarme procesal y policial”. Esta afirmación, inspirada sin duda por los intereses de las empresas de gestión de derechos de autor y de la propiedad industrial, además de mostrar una cruel insensibilidad acerca de la situación de extremada precariedad de las personas que practican el top-manta, es rotundamente falsa. En efecto, en la redacción emanada del Congreso sigue existiendo protección penal plena para la propiedad intelectual e industrial; la consideración de falta de algunos supuestos (por debajo de 400 euros) no constituye un desarme penal ni procesal, ni mucho menos policial, pues hay todo un Libro del Código Penal dedicado a las faltas que está siendo aplicado. Incluso en el supuesto que seguimos defendiendo, de que no se considerasen ilícito penal los supuestos con beneficio por debajo de los 400 euros, la diligencia persecutoria policial se seguiría desplegando en el ámbito administrativo sancionador, como podemos comprobar los ciudadanos en otros ámbitos (por ejemplo, las infracciones a las normas de circulación). Por eso, nos parece un despropósito derrochar recursos del sistema penal y policial en perseguir estas conductas para sobreproteger intereses de poderosos grupos de presión.
VI.- Por consiguiente, urgimos a los Sres. y Sras. Senadores/as para que no se dejen presionar por los intereses de empresas de gestión que perfectamente pueden hacer valer sus derechos de un modo más justo, proporcionado y, desde luego, generando menos sufrimiento estéril, asumiendo la reforma aprobada por el Congreso de los Diputados o, mejor aún, aprobando la efectiva desincriminación de las conductas más irrelevantes pues su despenalización no significa su legalización, ni que dichas conductas se vayan a incrementar, pues el simple comiso de sus pobres mercancías supone una gravísima consecuencia para estas personas, además de la posibilidad de ser detenido y expulsado por carecer de residencia legal. No es tanto lo que les pedimos: el Derecho penal de un Estado social no debería utilizarse para criminalizar la pobreza de una forma tan injusta como evidente.

INFORMATION ON THE STATUE OF LIBERTY
Liberty Enlightening the World (French: La liberté éclairant le monde), known more commonly as the Statue of Liberty (Statue de la Liberté), is a large statue that was presented to the United States by France in 1886. It stands at Liberty Island, New York in New York Harbor as a welcome to all visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans. The copper-clad statue, dedicated on October 28, 1886, commemorates the centennial of the United States and is a gesture of friendship from France to America. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi sculpted the statue, and Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (designer of the Eiffel Tower) engineered the internal structure. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was responsible for the choice of copper in the statue's construction and adoption of the repoussé technique.
The statue is of a female figure standing upright, dressed in a robe and a seven point spiked rays representing a nimbus (halo), holding a stone tablet close to her body in her left hand and a flaming torch high in her right hand. The tablet bears the words "JULY IV MDCCLXXVI" (July 4, 1776), commemorating the date of the United States Declaration of Independence.
The statue is made of a sheeting of pure copper, hung on a framework of steel (originally puddled iron) with the exception of the flame of the torch, which is coated in gold leaf. It stands atop a rectangular stonework pedestal with a foundation in the shape of an irregular eleven-pointed star. The statue is 151' 1" (46.5 m) tall, with the pedestal and foundation adding another 154 feet (46.9 m).
Worldwide, the Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable icons of the United States, and, more generally, represents liberty and escape from oppression. The Statue of Liberty was, from 1886 until the jet age, often one of the first glimpses of the United States for millions of immigrants after ocean voyages from Europe. The Statue of Liberty's obviously classical appearance (Roman stola, sandals, facial expression) derives from Libertas, ancient Rome's goddess of freedom from slavery, oppression, and tyranny. Broken shackles lie at her feet. The seven spikes in the crown represent the Seven Seas and seven continents. Her torch signifies enlightenment. The tablet in her hand shows the date of the nation's birth, July 4, 1776.
Since 1903, the statue, also known as "Lady Liberty," has been associated with Emma Lazarus's poem “The New Colossus” and has been a symbol of welcome to arriving immigrants. The interior of the pedestal contains a bronze plaque inscribed with the poem, which reads:
“Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

There are 354 steps inside the statue and its pedestal. There are 25 windows in the crown which comprise the jewels beneath the seven rays of the diadem. The tablet which the Statue holds in her left hand reads, in Roman numerals, "July 4, 1776" the day of America's independence from Britain. The Statue of Liberty was engineered to withstand heavy winds. Winds of 50 miles per hour cause the Statue to sway 3 inches (7.62 cm) and the torch to sway 5 inches (12.7 cm). This allows the Statue to move rather than break in high [wind load] conditions.

L'antic municipi de Vulpellac tenia, abans de l'annexió de Fonteta i Peratallada, 4,29 quilòmetres quadrats d'extensió. El terme comprèn una zona aturonada, a ponent i al NW amb el punt més elevat al puig Negre (109 m. d'alt), que forma part de la serra de Sant Ramon, límit amb el terme veí de La Bisbal d'Empordà. La part restant del terme és plana i drenada per la riera de Fonteta, de la conca del Daró, que devalla de les Gavarres. La carretera de Palamós a Girona, per la Bisbal, travessa el territori municipal d'est a oest. En aquest lloc s'inicia la carretera local de Vulpellac a Pals. El lloc de Volpeyliacho, del comtat d'Empúries, s'esmenta l'any 894 i, en documents dels anys 904 i 911, és anomenat Vulpiliaco. Hom ha suposat que el topònim pot derivar del gentilici llatí Vulpi8lius, però Joan Coromines el creu d'origen cèltic.
El poble de Vulpellac (51 m d'alt), a l'esquerra de la riera de Fonteta, té un nucli antic de notable interès arquitectònic, centrat pel conjunt que formen el castell-palau i l'església parroquial. Com en tants pobles de l'Empordà, en els darrers anys un bon nombres de cases han estat convertides en segona residència. Fora d'aquest nucli són força nombroses les masies disseminades pel veïnat del pla i una mica per tot el terme, que té altres dos nuclis importants de població: el veïnat de la Bordeta, sorgit el segle XIX al llarg de la carretera de Girona, i la urbanització del Puig de Sant Ramon.
L'església parroquial de Sant Julià i Santa Basilissa és l'antiga capella del castell. L'edifici actual és del segle XVI, d'estil gòtic tardà, amb detalls renaixentistes i fortificada. A migdia de l'església s'ha excavat part d'una necròpolis alt-medieval amb tombes antropomorfes i de lloses que també s'estenien per sota del temple i pel subsòl del castell, on es troba un fragment de sarcòfag decorat. S'han trobat vestigis de l'església anterior, que podrien ésser romànics.
El castell-palau, per la seva banda, manté en una bona part l'estructura essencial del segle XIV, amb nombroses reformes de la primera meitat del XVI, efectuades per ordre de Miquel Sarriera, que afectaren la disposició interior i la decoració, Pels volts de 1725 s'hi van fer altres reformes i més endavant, l'edifici va ser convertit en casa de pagès. És un immoble de dues plantes format per tres crugies, que junt amb l'església, emmarquen un petit pati interior de planta trapezial. El 1931 va ser declarat monument nacional.
A l'entorn de l'església i del palau hi ha restes disperses de la muralla, alguns vestigis de la qual es troben entremig de les cases del poble. L'element més ben conservat és la torre-portal del nord-est, de planta quadrada i amb la porta adovellada. Es conserva una altra torrre, cilíndrica, al sudo-est del poble, encaixada entre les cases. Malgrat l'alteració recent d'algunes cases del nucli urbà, estructurat a l'entorn del castell i de l'església, hi ha alguns edificis dels segles XVII i XVIII que tenen un interès notable com a arquitectura popular als carrerons del nord a la plaça Major, situada extramurs, i al carrer Major, on hi ha cases amb portals adovellats, escuts i alguns finestrals decorats.
A la part muntanyosa del terme hi ha petites zones de pins i alzines, i espais de vinya i oliveres. A la resta dels conreus, principalment de secà, es planten cereals, farratges i llegums. Hi ha un reduït sector de regadiu, que aprofita les aigües subterrànies, dedicat a hortalises, blat de moro i farratges. Les granges avícoles i la cria de bestiar boví i porcí, amb algunes activitats industrials derivades, completen l'economia. Degut a la seva situació —al costat de la carretera C-255 de Girona a Palamós i de la Bisbal—, al seu terme s'hi han anat instal·lant un bon nombre d'indústires, principalment relacionades amb el sector de la ceràmica o la pedra artificial. Per concolidar i ordenar aquest potencial industrial, l'any 1999 es va començar a urbanitzar un polígon que permetrà donar sortida a la gran demanda de sòl industrial que existeix en aquesta zona.

A mediodía de la iglesia se ha excavado parte de una necrópolis alto-medieval con tumbas antropomorfas y de losas que también se extendían por debajo del templo y por|para el subsuelo del castillo, donde se encuentra un fragmento de sarcófago decorado. Se han encontrado vestigios de la iglesia anterior, que podrían ser románicos.
El castillo-palacio, por su parte, mantiene en una buena parte la estructura esencial del siglo XIV, con numerosas reformas de la primera mitad del XVI, efectuadas por orden de Miquel Sarriera, que afectaron a la disposición interior y la decoración, Alrededor de 1725 se hicieron otras reformas y más adelante, el edificio fue convertido en casa de campo. Es un inmueble de dos plantas formado por tres crujías, que junto con la iglesia, enmarcan un pequeño patio interior de planta trapecial. En 1931 fue declarado monumento nacional.
En Torno a la iglesia y del palacio hay restos dispersos de la muralla, algunos vestigios de la cual se encuentran en medio de las casas del pueblo. El elemento mejor conservado es la torre-portal del nordeste, de planta cuadrada y con la puerta adintelada. Se conserva otra torrre, cilíndrica, en el sudo-est del pueblo, apretón entre las casas. A pesar de la alteración reciente de algunas casas del núcleo urbano, estructurado en torno al castillo y de la iglesia, hay algunos edificios de los siglos XVII y XVIII que tienen un interés notable como arquitectura popular a las callejuelas|callejones del norte en la plaza Major, situada extramurs, y a la calle Major, donde|dónde hay casas con portales adintelados, escudos y algunos ventanales decorados.
En la parte montañosa del término hay pequeñas zonas de pins y encinas, y espacios de viña y olivos. En el resto de los cultivos, principalmente de secano, se plantan cereales, forrajes y legumbres. Hay un reducido sector de regadío, que aprovecha las aguas subterráneas, dedicado a hortalises, maíz y forrajes. Las granjas avícolas y la cría de ganado bovino y porcino, con algunas actividades industriales derivadas, completan la economía. Debido a su situación -al lado de la carretera C-255 de Gerona a Palamós y de la Episcopal-, a su término se han ido instalando un buen número de indústires, principalmente relacionadas con el sector de la cerámica o la piedra artificial. Balkenbrij is een Nederlands gerecht dat vooral in het najaar en in de winter wordt gegeten. Van oorsprong komt het uit het oostelijke of zuidelijke deel van Nederland. Het bevat veel vlees en boekweitmeel.
Recept: Balkenbrij
Ingrediënten:
350 gram boekweitmeel (buckwheat flour)
100 gram gemengd meel (mixed flour)
500 gram varkenslever (pig liver)
250 gram kopvlees (varken) (head flesh from pig)
250 gram buikspek (abdomen pitch)
1 ½ liter water
Snufje nootmuskaat (note nutmeg)
Piment
Zout (salt)
Vers gemalen peper (pepper)
Bereiding:
Zeef de bloemsoorten en vermeng ze met elkaar.
Kook de varkenslever, varkenskopvlees en het buikspek in water met zout in enkele uren gaar.
Neem het vlees uit de pan en snijd alles in kleine stukjes.
Doe het gesneden vlees terug in de pan bij het vocht. Roer er het meel en de kruiden door.
Breng alles aan de kook en roer door tot er een deegbal ontstaat. Beboter een schaal of kom en stort er de balkenbrij in.
Laat de massa 24 uur in de koelkast besterven.

Balkenbrij is a traditional Dutch style form of liverwurst, technically a relative of the New England scrapple. It's usually made with pork liver and mainly other various cuts of the animal, all of which are cooked, ground, then cooked again with oatmeal and a special spice mix ("rommelkruid") to achieve the form of a loaf. The cuts of the loaf (about 1 cm thick) are fried.
