Arènes de Nîmes | Boulevard des Arènes 08/06/2013 19h12
One of the major attractions of the city of Nîmes is this arena which is still in use today. Hard to capture without a helicopter.
Arènes de Nîmes
The Arena of Nîmes is a Roman amphitheatre found in the French city of Nîmes. Built around 70 AD, it was remodelled in 1863 to serve as a bullring. The Arenas of Nîmes is the site of two annual bullfights during the Feria de Nîmes, and it is also used for other public events.
The building encloses an elliptical central space 133 m long by 101 m wide. It is ringed by 34 rows of seats supported by a vaulted construction. It has a capacity of 16,300 spectators and since 1989 has a movable cover and a heating system.
As the Empire fell, the amphitheatre was fortified by the Visigoths and surrounded by a wall. During the turbulent years that followed the collapse of Visigoth power in Hispania and Septimania, not to mention the Muslim invasion and subsequent conquest by the French kings in the mid eighth century, the viscounts of Nîmes constructed a fortified palace within the amphitheater. In 737, after failing to seize Narbonne, Charles Martel destroyed a number of Septimanian cities on his way north, including Nîmes and its amphitheatre, as asserted in the Continuations of Fredegar. Later a small neighbourhood developed within its confines, complete with one hundred denizens and two chapels. Seven hundred people lived within the amphitheatre during the apex of its service as an enclosed community. The buildings remained in the amphitheatre until the eighteenth century, when the decision was made to convert the amphitheatre into its present form.
Modern artists using this arena are Radiohead, The Police, Depeche Mode, Green Day, Björk, Elton John, Phil Collins, Jamiroquai, Michel Sardou, David Guetta, Peter Gabriel, Muse, Texas, Placebo, ZZ Top, Daft Punk, Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder and The Offspring. And perhaps lots more.

A header that I created for Meek's Genesis Live Cafe. It focuses on 1970's Genesis, so fans of the 80's may not recognise the bearded Phil Collins!
Genesis at Newcastle City Hall 29th April 1980 - the first of two nights. This was the Duke tour - taken with my Zenith E
Taken at Phil Collins and Genesis Concert ("Turn It on Again Tour") on September 14, 2007 at the Olympic Stadium, Montreal, Canada.
Who'd a thunk it? Before he donated it to a Texas museum back in 2014 Phil Collins had the largest collection of Alamo memorabilia in private hands including Davy Crockett's fringed bullet pouch and Jim Bowie's legendary knife. Apparently he'd been obsessed with the Battle of the Alamo since watching something about Davy Crockett on TV when he was a kid and then indulged himself once he'd made some moolah as an adult. Today's out of context quote is Collins' reply to reports belittling him for his supposed belief that he was at the Alamo in another life.
Anyway, I've juxtaposed his quote with a wide eyed young lady who looks a bit like a clown. Once you've liberally sprinkled a few pilfered logos in and adorned it with a green & yellow background then you're good to go with another successful 'No context required' piece. It's laser engraved on wood then hand painted and stands proud at 39 x 26cm. Drop us a line if you're interested...
Cheers

What do Wembley Stadium and Old Trafford have in common (for me)? Well, I've seen concerts in both...but never a game of football. :-)
This is the reformed Genesis performing at Old Trafford Stadium, Manchester last July as part of their 'Turn It On Again" tour. You can find other shots of this gig in my Genesis set.
You with the sad eyes
Don't be discouraged
Oh I realize
It's hard to take courage
In a world full of people
You can lose sight of it all
And the darkness, inside you
Can make you feel so small
-yeah yeah it's cyndi lauper's song but phil collins' version's the one playing in my head
-bacolod public plaza-
How can I just let you walk away, just let you leave without a trace
When I stand here taking every breath with you, ooh
You're the only one who really knew me at all...
We are PHOTOGRAPHERS!!!

I don't really like Phil Collins.
Love Genesis.
Not a fan of sucky Phil.
The weird thing? While I was taking this picture, "That's All" played on the radio ( KISSFM Ottawa at about 10:05 A.M.). So I was singing behind the album. True story:)
Taking that as a sign and including the lyrics, cuz it is kind of a cool song, after all:)
Just as I thought it was going alright
I find out I'm wrong, when I thought I was right
S'always the same, its just a shame, thats all
I could say day, and you'd say night
Tell me its black when I know that its white
Always the same, its just a shame, thats all
I could leave but I wont go
Though my heart might tell me so
I cant feel a thing from my head down to my toes
But why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
Its always the same, its just a shame, thats all
Turning me on, turning me off,
Making me feel like I want too much
Living with you's just putting me through it all of the time
Running around, staying out all night
Taking it all instead of taking one bite
Living with you's just putting me through it all of the time
I could leave but I wont go
Well it'd be easier I know
I cant feel a thing from my head down to my toes
Why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
Its always the same, its just a shame, thats all
Truth is I love you
More than I wanted to
Theres no point in trying to pretend
Theres been no-one who
Makes me feel like you do
Say well be together till the end
I could leave but I wont go
It'd be easier I know
I cant feel a thing from my head down to my toes
So why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
Its always the same, its just a shame, thats all
But I love you
More than I wanted to
Theres no point in trying to pretend
Theres been no-one who
Makes me feel like you do
Say we'll be together till the end
But just as I thought it was going alright
I find out I'm wrong when I thought I was right
Its always the same, its just a shame, thats all
Well I could say day, and you'd say night
Tell me its black when I know that it's white
Its always the same, its just a shame, thats all

This is from a Greensboro,NC concert Dec. 11, 1983. The tickets were $12.50! That was quite a bargain for such an excellent show.

I thought I'd managed to exorcise Phil Collins from my thoughts at least temporarily but today's piece just couldn't help itself. Today I'm juxtaposing Phil's out of context quote which reveals that it wasn't 5 star all the way when touring in Europe with his band against a ciggy smoking Hamar tribeswoman. I'm assuming this quote was probably some time in the 80's. You may have been down but you were never out Phil.
Once you've liberally sprinkled in a couple of pilfered logos in and given it a pink and white background then you're good to go with another successful 'No context required' piece. It's laser engraved on wood then hand painted and stands proud at 39 x 26cm. Drop us a line if you're interested...
Cheers
