In the 1970s, however, it was shown that this sleep phase is a characteristic of the most advanced animal species. In reptiles, for example, it is not present.

There seem to be so many Fledglings about this year. It must be a bumper season not only for birds - but their food supply as well.
Great for photographers, not only do they look cute, but they seem quite approachable in this naive phase of life.

Of all of Amtrak's heritage painted fleet, the Phase IV engines had proved most elusive for me. I don't think I ever even saw the prior engine, 184, before it was mysteriously repainted last year. Luckily, the new representative of the Phase IV livery is still looking fresh by the time it got to DC this weekend. After making a trip south on yesterday's Palmetto, I set out to catch the northbound return trip around Alexandria. The sun had gone into hiding by the time they appeared, but given the encroaching shadows I'm not mad about it. Hopefully this one sticks around the DC pool for a good while.
