Death Valley is a desert valley located in Eastern California, in the northern Mojave Desert bordering the Great Basin Desert.
It is one of the hottest places in the world along with deserts in the Middle East.
The valley received its English name in 1849 during the California Gold Rush. It was called Death Valley by prospectors and others who sought to cross the valley on their way to the gold fields after 13 pioneers perished from one early expedition of wagon trains.
In 1994, the valley was redesignated as Death Valley National Park, as well as being substantially expanded to include Saline and Eureka Valleys.

Another sad story with the owls in Pinellas County, Florida. Last year, all three owlets perished, two from eating poisoned rats and one from bee stings. This year, mom and dad also produced three owlets, Huey, Dewey and Louie. The oldest, Huey, died a week ago from ingestion of a rat poisoned with an anticoagulant rodenticide. A few days later mom also died. Dad is looking after Dewey and Louie and so far, so good. But we've got to get rid of these rodenticides and find safer alternatives for the owls and other raptors not to mention pets and young children. Please, do not use rodenticides that cause secondary poisonings to wildlife.
Pictured here is Louie. He's around 9 weeks old now. Dewey is a week older and is likely a female as she is larger than Louie. Huey was likely also a female.

Zeph 2:1-7)
Psalm 83
Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God.
2 For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head.
3 They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones.
4 They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.
5 For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee:
6 The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes;
7 Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre;
8 Assur also is joined with them: they have holpen the children of Lot. Selah.
9 Do unto them as unto the Midianites; as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the brook of Kison:
10 Which perished at Endor: they became as dung for the earth.
11 Make their nobles like Oreb, and like Zeeb: yea, all their princes as Zebah, and as Zalmunna:
12 Who said, Let us take to ourselves the houses of God in possession.
13 O my God, make them like a wheel; as the stubble before the wind.
14 As the fire burneth a wood, and as the flame setteth the mountains on fire;
15 So persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm.
16 Fill their faces with shame; that they may seek thy name, O Lord.
17 Let them be confounded and troubled for ever; yea, let them be put to shame, and perish:
18 That men may know that thou, whose name alone is Jehovah, art the most high over all the earth.

I hope everyone is holding up OK. There have only been 2 confirmed cases in my little town of 2500. luckily no one here ever goes anywhere..;) This lighthouse has a little historical significance. A schooner carrying the bricks for the tower foundered on the sandbar at the entrance to Aransas Pass during high seas in late December 1855. The crew was rescued, but the ship and its cargo were a total loss. During 1856, new bricks arrived at the island, followed later by the lantern room, and finally a fourth-order Fresnel lens. The keeper’s dwelling and the fifty-five-foot, octagonal tower, with a coat of brown paint, were completed by the early part of 1857. The light from the tower’s lantern room first illuminated the night sky above the pass later that year.
Sometime after the start of the Civil War, the lens was removed from the lantern room for safekeeping. Control of the tower passed repeatedly between Confederate and Union forces. Then, on Christmas Day 1862, Confederate General John B. Magruder ordered the destruction of the tower. Two kegs of powder were exploded inside the tower, damaging the upper twenty-feet of brickwork and destroying most of the circular staircase.
After the war, Texas’ lights were gradually repaired or rebuilt and returned to service. Early in 1867, a work crew arrived to repair the upper portion of the damaged tower at Aransas Pass. Acting District Lighthouse Engineer M.F. Bonzano described a winter storm that hampered the work: “During the progress of the repairs one of the severest Northers ever experienced on the Texas coast occurred. The cold was so severe that frozen fish were hove ashore by the hundreds and birds of all sorts sought refuge in the tower and camp of the workmen where they perished in large numbers.” Aransas Pass Lighthouse was the last principal light along the coast to return to service, doing so in the spring of 1867.
I suppose I don’t realize how often I make comments about cows when I’m in the car with Norm… which makes me wonder what it would be like if I were ever to see a transcript of my own running monologue.
Perish the thought.
We were out near Cambridge and, as I’ve mentioned in the past, Norm is especially good at exploring backroads (and finding his way out of them too). We had passed a few farms and I must have said something about looking for cows and he asked, ‘What is it with you and cows?’ I wasn’t sure how to answer that exactly because, after all, most of the time cows just stand there in the field munching. I expect it’s something about their big faces I like...or maybe it's the influence of those Elsie commercials when I was a kid.
So each time Norm saw cows he’d stop the car and I’d check to make sure the farmer wasn’t around, suspicious that I was from some government agency sneaking about early on a Sunday morning.
As it happened, the only ones suspicious of me were the cows.

In August of 1944, an uprising broke out in Warsaw, Poland, which had been occupied for five years. Around 16,000 resistance fighters and somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 civilians perished during the 63 days of fighting.

Bald Eaglets
Bucks County,PA
For the second year their pine tree fell but this year it didn't land on another tree and two of the eaglets died. The smallest one not shown in this picture survived and was taken to a rehab facility and it will be reunited with the parents when it is old enough to fly. They were much bigger when the nest fell and the owner said that due to the hard ground they perished. The nest was on private property very close to their house and the road with lots of activity. Hopefully, next year they will find a better tree.

A plaque inside the entrance of the cemetery to honor the Allied POW's who perished during the construction of the Burma Railway.
Wikipedia: The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery (known locally as the Don-Rak War Cemetery) is the main prisoner of war (POW) cemetery for victims of Japanese imprisonment while building the Burma Railway. It is on the main road, Saeng Chuto Road, through the town of Kanchanaburi, Thailand, adjacent to an older Chinese cemetery. The cemetery contains 6,982 graves of British, Australian and Dutch prisoner of wars of which 6,858 have been identified.

Big Ears the fox looks up at a helicopter. There were many helicopters flying low this past week, rattling the foundations of my house, and shattering what is left of my nerves. These are sad times. No child is born a racist, or born to hate. Our world needs more love, compassion and kindness. We have to stop hating and killing each other or we will all perish.
Big Ears the fox says, Being Kind is Always the Right Thing To Do!
“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
― Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom
Thank-you to all who comment on my photos, it is greatly appreciated.
The weather warmed up slightly today on strong south winds and I was surprised to see a pair of collared doves show up in the park. They disappeared in December when the weather got very cold and I thought they either left or perished. I'm glad to see this little gray ghost is still alive and well.
With the high lake levels, moderate wind and waves wash over the piers. Often these conditions are dangerous and many souls have perished attempting to walk the piers and breakwaters on Lake Michigan.
Do you not yet comprehend the wicked secret of the immortal? All age and die, save you. All rot and fall to dust, save you. Any child you bear becomes a crone and perishes before your eyes. Any lover withers and shrinks into incontinence and bent, toothless senility. While you, only you, never age. Never tire. Never fade. Alone. But after a time, you'll lose the desire for passion entirely, for connection with anyone. Like a muscle that atrophies from lack of use. And one day you'll realize you've become like them. Beautiful and dead. You have become a perfect, unchanging portrait of yourself.

A Garland of Flowers
-Lulu Gee-
‘Neath skies that remember
the fall of my feet,
from now ‘til September
through amorous heat,
as warmer days harden
and red blushes gold
a-bloom in the garden
pale lustres take hold.
A garland of flowers
this morning for you,
a glisten from showers
soft yellow and blue
as dawn gloried cover
for rose to unfold,
like lover to lover
seek warmth from the cold.
The blossoms I gather,
this poem I rhyme
come sooner than later
to perish in time -
my rhymes like the flowers
unbidden I strew,
these restless spent hours
I offer to you!

Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.

Proverbs 29:18
"Where there is no vision, people perish."

Isaiah 2: 6-11
The Day of the Lord
"6
You, Lord, have abandoned your people,
the descendants of Jacob.
They are full of superstitions from the East;
they practice divination like the Philistines
and embrace pagan customs.
7
Their land is full of silver and gold;
there is no end to their treasures.
Their land is full of horses;
there is no end to their chariots.
8
Their land is full of idols;
they bow down to the work of their hands,
to what their fingers have made.
9
So people will be brought low
and everyone humbled—
do not forgive them.[a]
10
Go into the rocks, hide in the ground
from the fearful presence of the Lord
and the splendor of his majesty!
11
The eyes of the arrogant will be humbled
and human pride brought low;
the Lord alone will be exalted in that day."

Looking toward the Desolation Wilderness after overnight showers.
Fire update: They are making good progress in containing the big wildfires, although two of them continue to grow. The welcome showers that brought lower humidity will end today, and the weekend will bring warmer, dryer conditions over the weekend. Unfortunately, at least 4 people were not able to flee and perished in the fires.
Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your kind comments -- I appreciate them all.

IN EXPLORE 30/05/2022 NEWCASTLE SUNSET CO DOWN WALK ABOUT ON 29-05-2022...............The name of the town is thought to derive from the castle built by Felix Magennis of the Magennis clan in 1588, which stood at the mouth of the Shimna River. This castle was demolished in 1830.[4][5] The town is referred to as New Castle in the Annals of the Four Masters in 1433, so it is likely that he built on the site of an existing structure.[6][7][8]
The Montgomery Manuscripts record that Newcastle was besieged and later captured by Sir James Montgomery of the Ards in April 1642 in the aftermath of the 1641 Rebellion (pp. 128–134). Prior to 1641 the Castle belonged to the Magennis', but after the rebellion the property was confiscated and granted to Robert Hawkins, great grandfather to Robert Hawkins who assumed the surname of Magill. The date 1588 was inscribed on a stone placed over the front entrance of the Castle, built by Felix Magenis. Newcastle passed from the Magills to the Mathews, and subsequently to the Annesleys. In the late 1700s the Castle was modernised by the Matthews and then the Annesleys, and rented by the Board of Customs for the accommodation of revenue officers. Around 1830 the castle was demolished and the 'Annesley Arms Hotel' was constructed within the original castle compound. The 3rd Earl Annesley built a new 'marine residence', called 'Donard Lodge' on the lower mountain slope above the town (it was demolished in 1966). St. John's Church was also opened on 'The Rock' in 1832 to accommodate the visitors and growing population in Earl Annesley's developing seaside resort.
The Newcastle fishing disaster occurred on 13 January 1843 when boats from Newcastle and Annalong set out for the usual fishing stations, and were caught in a gale. 14 boats were lost in the heavy seas including a boat which had gone to the rescue. Only two boats survived, the Victoria and the Brothers.[9] 73 men perished, 46 of whom were from Newcastle. They left twenty-seven widows, one hundred and eighteen children, and twenty-one dependents. A Public Subscription was raised and the cottages, known as Widows Row, were built for the widows and dependents.[10][11] A local song about the disaster says "Newcastle town is one long street entirely stripped of men"[12]
In 1910 Harry Ferguson flew a small plane across Newcastle beach in one of the first engine powered flights by aircraft in Ireland. He completed the flight in an attempt to win a £100 prize offered by the town for the first powered flight along the strand. His first take off ended badly, but according to a modern newspaper report 'He flew a distance of almost three miles along the foreshore at a low altitude varying between fifty and five hundred feet'. This event is recorded by a plaque on the promenade.

This spomenik at Podgarić, Croatia was built to commemorate the community's rebellion and uprising against Ustaše occupying forces in the greater Moslavina and Zagreb region during the National Liberation War (WWII), while also recognizing the support structures the village created to support the war effort.
The official public unveiling of the monument complex took place on September 7th, 1967 - a grand ceremony attended by hundreds of people, presided over and inaugurated by the President of Yugoslavia, Josip Tito. In fact, Tito appreciated the Podgarić monument so much that he later had the concept model for the monument installed in his Zagreb residence
The primary element of the spomenik complex is a large winged abstract sculpture, about 10m tall and 20m wide, with a central sphere-shaped 'eye' plated in aluminum panels. Along the approach pathway to this sculpture is a series of earthen mound crypts which houses the remains of the roughly 900 Partisans who perished at the site's nearby hospital
The primary intention of the monument was to represent the 'wings of victory' overcoming death and defeat, an overt allusion to the Partisan rebel's conquest over the invading Axis occupiers

The day before midsummer, the queen bee used to fly the enormous distance to a far-off ocean. She plunged to its depths in search of the rare sea flower: Neptune’s Clover. No other bee in all history could accomplish such a feat. For two thousand years, this same queen had gathered the rejuvenating and curative pollen from Neptune’s Clover.
As the days rolled on, the queen still had not returned. The colony was besides itself in worry and set forth to find her. They all latched their feet onto the hive, which was as large as a hill, and flapped their wings for lift off. When finally, they arrived to what they believed to be the area of Neptune’s Clover, their exhausted wings failed. The queen bee was nowhere to be seen. The hive, heavy with honey, and all its pilots fell into the sea. The two-thousand-year-old colony perished on a beautiful, calm afternoon, beneath the impartial waves.
Nowadays, bees might construct their hives in the nooks and crannies of human architecture. Unbeknownst to the people, their floating civilization is built right over the site of the sunken hive. Perhaps the bees of this century instinctively feel its presence, and so we find them in profusion adding their honeycombs to the present architecture.
“Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree
If mankind perished utterly;
And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn,
Would scarcely know that we were gone.”
