Jeremy Jackson - ship in Space Ritual, you won't regret it.

F10 for a change followed by a minor left crop due to messy set up. You wouldn't believe the set up if I told you but the PCB board was wedged vertically in the front of my Smeg cooker !

Today my 70D suddenly stopped working in the middle of a shoot. It won't even turn on now.

Based on my web research there appears to be an issue with the 70D PCB board burning out, so there's not much hope.

To honor this hard working camera that has brought me joy, beauty and cold hard cash I created this altar and light painted its way to Camera Heaven...

The Ef-M 28mm Macro has a 1.2 macro mode, now I am playing with it, its interesting but hard to control a bit, then again I shake as well despite image stabilisation. I kind of liked this one, its a PCB board for a HDD controller, measures about 5*3 cm

Canon EOS 5D MkIII

EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM

Not particularly an inspiring image upload however I thought it would be a good test for my new camera body doing to tracking focusing with the subject rapidly apporaching. So I had no intention of investing in the 5DmkIII especially this close to rumoured announcements of Canon's 5D mkV or even the 6D mkII, but I was pushed to due to a break down on my 6D the day before a wedding shoot!

Here's where it gets funny, My 6D stopped reading memory cards all together. Tried multiple cards tried cleaning bashing it about all these little tricks and tips online alas no luck. So i sent it off the Canon repair centre, in this instance FIXATION in Kensington, London. I've had repairs from them before and can only praise for their service however on this occasion they failed to deliver. I had to chase them for an update and after my call they finally had a technician inspect it the immediate response was "Yes there is an issue no signs of misuse or tampering however there's clearly something wrong" their solution " Gut the camera replace the PCB board buffer chip and SD tray" These already seemed a bit excessive when they hadn't actually identified the fault merely found a both costly and quick fix. They then said "we advise sensor cleaning, focus calibration and CLA as its compulsory after servicing ". Quite rightly so if you fancy spending more on the camera than its worth to buy again. So I refused to proceed with their estimated quote, I won't tell you the total but it was excessive to say the least. And paid to have the camera returned back to me, low and behold the camera was returned in perfect working order! So this left me in 2 minds did the camera just need a bit of knocking about in the back of a UPS van or did they actually identify a fault quickly rectify it but try to pin a load of service to make some money out of me?

Regardless i got the camera back but when FIXATION advised the my 6D was worthy of their "environmentally scraping scheme" I went ahead and made the purchase for the 5D not expecting the 6D to come back to life.

So quick review ergonomically the camera feels great in hand the layout is fairly familiar and the screen and view finder are lovely.

Cons for me so far - the focusing system seems extremely far fetched in comparison to the 6D and 5D mkI/mkII the shutter makes an awful noise (activated silent shutter immediately) had to disable the focus point illumination as it made the entire viewfinder glow red and finally whilst the image performance is great I personally think you get better noise performance from the 6D.

This is image was shot on a single point AI SERVO before I'd got my head around expanding the AF point and also cropped in quite significantly.

Dusty electronic components (mostly resistors and capacitors) of the PCB board of a graphic card. Picture taken with my macro lens.

In 2021, the Raspberry Pi 4 model B's SoC was silently upgraded from a 'B' model to a 'C' model more commonly found on the Pi 400 and Compute Module 4. The new part number is Broadcom 2711ZPKFSB06COT

Raspberry Pi 3 B+ with PiFi DAC+ 2.0 connected by headers wired on prototype PCB board. PiFi DAC+ is modified to reduce circuit level noise.

I admit i screwed this one up a bit, i got the MOSI/MISO lines all screwed up on the PCB board that drives everything, so only 1 of the 3 LCD panels will work, ahh well. this is test mode with all segments illuminated. the panel itself takes the fuel level data from FS in KG, there is a switch on the panel that will conver it to LB for you :)

This is a cautionary tale to be careful and wise with the data that you value! I thought I had taken every precaution against data loss. I had two external hard drives mirrored, which contained my massive 2.8TB Aperture library. Then I had two offsite backups. One backup was updated frequently as I ventured out and took pictures. The other one was only backed up about every 6 months. The second backup was less frequent to catch any hidden problem that revealed itself after a backed up.

Disaster begun to strike about a week ago. Shortly after importing several hundred pictures, one of the external hard drives suddenly failed with the telltale repetitive clicking. After a bit of investigation I realized that the drive was overheating and would not stay online, so I disconnected it. A year ago I had replaced a failing hard drive in the same mirror without incident. This problem didn't seem particularly alarming. Nothing was lost. I still had a redundant and working hard drive in the mirror. I planned on replacing the broken drive within a couple of weeks. But I didn't get the chance. I woke up three days later to hear the dreaded hard drive of death on the second external hard drive!!! No!!!!!!!

The last backup was already a week old! At that moment I knew I had lost some of my pictures. This is a more active time of the year for me to take pictures, so the timing could not have been worse. And I had just bought a speciality camera, the Sigma DP1 Merrill. The first few pictures from a new camera are always special to me. The electric excitement is a delight to reflect upon.

I wanted to try to recover as much as possible without taking on too much risk. So I reconnect the first failing hard drive and began an Aperture backup to my oldest backup. It was 8 months old and required several hundred gigabytes to be copied over. It was a tense few hours. I cranked the A/C and pushed the household temperature down towards 65F. I kept checking the hard drive by hand to see how warm it felt. Literally in the last 2 minutes of the backup the hard drive began to overheat! I allowed the backup to continue for the last few moments as the drive struggled to give up the remaining data. I was lucky with this failing hard drive. Occasionally hard drives fail in a temperature sensitive way. Most likely the electronics on the PCB board were failing and causing the circuit board to overheat. The second failed hard drive refused to startup, so I couldn't get even a byte of data from it.

I purchased a new 4TB hard drive and restored my Aperture library. The only problem is that I had several days worth of missing pictures, including the first pictures taken with the Sigma DP1. I was able to find most of the pictures that I had edited, but not the ones from my new camera. As a habit I always reformat SD and compact flash cards when I begin a new session. I knew these missing pictures should still be on a formatted SD card. First I tried a free recovery software called Photorec. I was able to successfully recover JPEG images, but not the X3F files. Those were corrupted in some unknown way. I was unable to open the these X3F files in either Sigma Photo Pro or other software packages. I even went so far as to pay for a commercial recovery product, Card Rescue. But it also recovered corrupted X3F files.

I was highly motivated to figure this out. I had the files, but they were invalid!! I began to experiment with another SD card and replicate the situation in which these photos were lost--take a few pictures with the Sigma DP1 camera; save the images to my computer for reference; format the SD card in the Canon 5D Mark III; use one of the software products to recover the files. I repeated this experiment several times and each time both software packages returned corrupted files.

I googled around for how to recover X3F files from a formatted SD card. I found at least a few other posts from people unable to recover them. I knew that I wasn't alone, but no one had apparently resolved this issue. Looking at large binary files is not a human friendly task. (If you are on OS X, I recommend taking a look at Hex Fiend.) After spending a few minutes comparing the binary files--the original and recovered files, I realized what was wrong. It was simple! The recovered X3F files were padded with a LOT of zeros at the end of the file. I thought it was weird that both software packages were doing the same thing. So I looked into the source code of PhotoRec to see how it worked. I found that the software does NOT inherently know how big a recovered file is supposed to be. It can only tell which sectors are associated with the file and assume every byte in those sectors belong to that file. Some file formats provide a file size and PhotoRec is able to utilize that information to trim the file during the recovery process. I looked at the source code for the X3F files and found that it doesn't determine the file size from the content of the file. However, it should be able to! I was able to locate information on the X3F Sigma RAW file. It shouldn't take too much work to modify the recovery software to read the header and determine the file size.

I did not want to wait around to modify the open source software myself or notify others about how to correct this bug. So I used the hex editor to remove all of the extra zero padding at the end of file BY HAND! It took several hours to modify each and every recovered file. In the end, I only lost a hand full of RAW images because they were corrupted due to being truncated.

I should follow up with PhotoRec and CardRescue and let them know how to correct their software to recover X3F files. If you are stumbling on this post because you accidentally lost X3F files on a formatted card and your recovery software returns corrupted images, you are in luck!! Simply edit the files by hand and remove all the extra zero padding on the end. It is tedious and not for the faint of heart, but it is do-able with a decent hex editor.

The picture you are looking at is one of the recovered images!! It is not the best work I have done, but I thought the story behind the picture was worth posting about.

As a final word, please make sure your backup solution is adequate!!

Olympus optical detector systeem 2013.

This is a new version of the optical detector. There is another line array used with 400 dpi. As a result, the detection resolution doubles. The used line array is TSL1401CL. There are some advantages in relation to the previous line array. The integration time is the same for all pixels. The light charges are transferred once at the start of the readout for all 128 pixels. This array is faster but now has only 1 output line. All 128 pixels must now be read out serially to the same pin, the foregoing could be read via 2 outputs. But this array is faster so the shortest integration time remains low. The ADC converters should now be faster. The new version with the ADC7885 now has a bandwidth of 30 MHz and a serial clock to 48 MHz. I now use 2 of these converters via serial time multiplexing.

The line array has 400 dpi versus 200 dpi of the TSL202R. The optical lenght pad is now only the half. The detector has double resolution in depth, a great feature for macro closeup. 1 pixel shift is now only 0.4mm depth at 500 mm distance. At closer settings this value is proportionally smaller.

The full timing diagram to readout this line array is show at:

www.flickr.com/photos/fotoopa_hs/8093622277/

Not easy, but nice job for the FPGA controller. The timing is show for an 40 MHz PLL clock but this may be higher if need to 64 Mhz or even 96 Mhz. The TSL1401CL is a very small SMD version. I will show later how to put him on the single layer PCB board.

Kipon Adapter with Electronic Iris Control Function for

Contax N1 mount lens to Sony E Mount

This is the camera side of this bad adapter, to date (March 2014) the only one on the market.

The part around the mount with contacts board is very bad made (designed-engineered), and is also fragile.

Between the little black sled-guide that is on the left, and the contacts-PCB board, there is an unwanted step, they are misaligned, they are not on the same level.

This construction defect creates a strong obstacle to the sliding and the necessary compression of the golden contacts that are inside the camera and cause so a strong incision, immediately at the first attempt, then quickly cutting the golden contacts of the PCB.

The epoxy glass material of the PCB and the gold contacts of this Kipon adapter come scratched, already at the first time, and then, time after time, incised a little more by the golden contacts that are inside the Sony cameras, as if they were punches.

This photo shows how much it becomes corrupted after a few tens of times that the adapter is inserted and removed

Almost certainly quickly lose his functionality so they will have a very short life.

Already now it happen that the Sony A7r suddenly freeze when shooting in certain conditions, when pressing the fingers around the adapter-camera body group, very likely due to interruption of the dialogue between body and lens.

I must switch off the camera, unmount and remount the lens to be able to continue shooting!

Not easy, but nice job for the FPGA controller. The timing is show for an 40 MHz PLL clock but this may be higher if need to 64 Mhz or even 96 Mhz. The TSL1401CL is a very small SMD version. I will show later how to put him on the single layer PCB board.

This design is my second iteration of the NB6M paddles. They use copperclad PCB board material--which actually sands up nicely. The coins are Turkish Lira from Istanbul last year.

And wouldn't you know it! Mom gets it--and it doesn't work. Oh, well.

The combi boiler broke down during my shower. More annoyingly, this circuit board cost £355 to replace!

Flexible printed circuit boards, also called Flexible PCBs or Flex PCBs, derive their name for their ability to enable the circuitry to be designed to fit the electronic device or product, as opposed to building the device to conform to the circuit board. Flex circuit boards are characterized by a distinctly patterned printed circuitry and component arrangement highlighted by a malleable base material.

Flexible pcb board is used widely in everyday technology and electronics in addition to high-end, complex completed components.

Flexible circuits are also used extensively in other applications and industries including:

• Communications

• Consumer Electronics

• Automotive

• Medical

• Industrial

• Aerospace

• Military

• Transportation

LGB JUMBO 50100 INTERNALS this picture shows that once the red upper casing is off you can either take pictures of where the wires connect to on the main PCB power board and where the spade connectors go to as i did for future reference of where they all go to on the main PCB power board.

The removing of the red casing top involves the unscrewing and removing of the six main casing screws underneath the unit on the main baseplate that secures the main PCB board to the main baseplate.

Care must be taken not to lose any of the twelve plastic spacers that separate the main component PCB power board and the main internal transformer from the black baseplate to avoid it shorting out the electronics inside the main case when the transformer is fully assembled.

once the red casing is off after removing the main speed controller knob and the remaining red contol knobs that control all of the jumbos various control features that are unique to this massive LGB jumbo 10 amp power pack these control knobs may simply pull out of there push fit connection in the base of the rotary switches that they control they maybe fairly easy to remove but if not the last six remaining screws that secures the main internal transformer to the main PCB power board maybe removed to gain access to the rear of the rotary switches that these knobs are secured in order to release the five control knobs from the rear of the main PCB board and their rotay switches they inserted in to taking care not to pull on the wires that are soldered on to the VOLT and AMP meters to the main PCB power board and taking care not to loose any of the other six of the twelve white plastic spacers that seperate the main PCB cicuit board from the black metal baseplate that forms the outer part of the bottom casing of this unit.

the red casing can then be removed after taking note where all of the various wires go to on the main PCB board or you can simply follow my easy to guide you are reading now to tell you where all of these wires go to on the main PCB board as you can see in this picture.

This concludes my tutorial on the LGB JUMBO 50100 transformer and hope it was very useful to everyone who needed follow this tutorial to service or to repair and replace the jumbos components and required extra help in the reassembly of their jumbo 50100 transformer.

I wrote this LGB JUMBO servicing tutorial as there was nothing like this on the internet web at all and upon doing a google search of the LGB JUMBO nothing came up with a tutorial about the internal servicing of this LGB jumbo transformer power pack.

and as there were lots of questions on the servicing and repair of this LGB jumbo transformer unit i thought i would write a tutorial upon replacing my own LGB jumbo main transformer unit.
