Solar PV install by EOS Energy on the Passive Project by Postgreen.

(Swedish: Hamnhuset) Energy-efficient passive housing with a quarter of the heating requirement of a normal apartment building. Passive housing has no radiators or other active forms of heating. Passive housing requires so little heating that solar heating through the windows and surplus heat from people and electric appliances etc., is sufficient to maintain a comfortable temperature indoors. An efficient heat exchanger is used to warm fresh outside air using air that is extracted from the building.

Solar collectors on the roof give energy for part of the warm tap water.

The garden side. 18 houses for rent owned by the municipal housing company Viskaforshem AB. Each house is 109 sqm. The roof is made of titanium zinc which means low maintenance (Rheinzink made in Germany). The wall panel is made of pine that has undergone a vacuum process to become extra sustainable.

Built: 2009-2010. Address: Pumpstigen, Viskafors. Architects: Ola Nylander and Mattias Karlsson.

For a Passive House in a cold climate no radiators or under-floor heating are necessary. The building is superinsulated and airtight and has therefore only minor transmission and ventilation losses. It is primarily heated by radiated solar energy, heat produced by humans, household machinery, domestic electronic equipment and light fittings.

RICHMOND, Calif., - More than 300 volunteers are expected to roll-up their sleeves to rebuild the aging John F. Kennedy Park into a community gem. The City of Richmond, in partnership with The Trust for Public Land, is championing the one-day community-build park project in the City’s Park Plaza neighborhood, which will also include the installation of more than neighborhood trees in celebration of Arbor Day.

Built in 1968, the seven-acre park will be renovated to meet the changing needs of today’s park users and bring multiple benefits to the neighborhood. The project and process is a catalyst of a new era for park revitalization and cross-sector partnerships.

“I’ll be there with a wheel barrel and ready to work,” said Mayor Tom Butt who’s a strong supporter of expanding the City’s urban park footprint. “I applaud the commitment of the neighborhood residents who have been working with our urban planners to redesign the park into something we can all be proud of.”

Since April 2015, more than 400 community members have joined in the participatory process to design the park improvements. Together, they are helping shape future programs aimed at improving quality of life and providing connections to meaningful, safe, beautiful outdoor spaces for people of all ages.

“Our park has been underutilized for many years for a variety of reasons,” says Madalyn Law, President of the Park Plaza Neighborhood Council. “The rebuild of JFK Park gives our neighbors an opportunity to use the park again in a more positive environment with new features designed for all ages to come together for health and wellness and fun in the outdoors.

Generously funded and technically supported by The Trust for Public Land, the new design will feature a family zone with a children’s playscape, offering a fun environment designed to enhance youth's imagination around play, and build positive childhood memories. The park will be the home of the City of Richmond’s first Fitness ZoneTM and fitness trail. Together, the fully-accessible and senior-friendly fitness zone and the fitness trail encourage area residents to meet in the park and support one another in healthy lifestyle choices and strengthening social ties.

“Every Richmond resident deserves a quality park within walking distance from their home,” said Gina Fromer, The Trust for Public Land California State Director. “Good parks make neighborhoods healthy and whole.”

Other park improvements include a community garden, the installation of energy efficient LED lights, a 5,000 square foot mural, and a rain garden.

“With the new improvements going into the park, I have no doubt that it will be a community treasure for generations to come,” said Mayor Butt. “Open space that has a mix of passive and active use and is appropriate for different age groups means everyone in our community will be able to enjoy it.”

The upcoming volunteer action is part of the City’s on-going commitment to invest in its neighborhoods. Earlier this year, more than 100 volunteers came together to rebuild the softball field in an event sponsored by O.C. Jones & Sons, beginning a powerful movement for change in the neighborhood.

Chevron is providing funding for the Chevron STEM Learning Center and Community Plaza, which will provide a teaching space for local schools to use to explore science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), as well as a picnic pavilion for residents to enjoy.

“We are proud to partner with the City of Richmond on this park project, which will help spark interest in STEM for students at neighboring schools,” said Kory Judd, general manager of the Chevron Richmond Refinery. “The John F. Kennedy Park provides a unique opportunity for our neighbors and students to enjoy the park space and explore STEM education in a park setting.”

In addition to the community-build park event, the public is invited to visit The 50 Tour: Champions of the Bay presented by Chevron. The tour will feature the eight Vince Lombardi trophies from the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers and a guest appearance by an NFL legend. It will also feature the Chevron STEM Zone, an interactive learning space that demonstrates how STEM fuels innovation all around us – through the lens of football.

"I've been a proud resident of the south east community for over 40 years and it's wonderful that some of our requested neighborhood improvements are coming to fruition," said Naomi Williams, President of the Pullman Neighborhood Council. "With the park improvements and the reopening of the Richmond Swim Center, we are seeing a south east renaissance."

BisonSat – ELaNa XII

The BisonSat mission is an Earth Science mission that will demonstrate the acquisition of 100-meter or better resolution visible light imagery of Earth using passive magnetic stabilization from a CubeSat. The science data, 69 km x 52 km color images with a resolution of 43 meters per pixel, a few of which will be images of the Flathead Indian Reservation in northwest Montana, will be used primarily for engaging tribal college students and tribal communities in NASA’s mission. BisonSat is the first CubeSat designed, built, tested, and operated by tribal college students. Launched by NASA’s CubeSat Launch Initiative on the ELaNa XII mission as an auxiliary payload aboard the NROL-55 Mission on October 8, 2015.

Using surface supplied dive equipment, EPA divers demonstrate a passive sampling technique in the Duwamish River. We know that porewater relates to fish tissue data, so sampling techniques that target this area are very useful in gauging a site cleanup. EPA divers have deployed a variety of passive samplers to support Superfund work. This technique has the capability of integrating data over a longer period of time--making it more likely that a contaminated groundwater plume discharging to a river like this one will be captured, vs. other techniques that might produce more of a snapshot. The sampling technique gauges the effectiveness of carbon in sediment in binding PCBs. This aspect could demonstrate the effectiveness of sediment amendments to lower available PCBs. Background:

Let me just start off by saying I understand that smoking is a terrible disgusting habit, and I could probably avoid situations like the one I'm about to mention [and have a better life in the long run] if I just quit smoking, but since that's not the current situation, here goes: There is a homeless man who comes on our stoop each day in the hopes of finding a half-smoked cigarette that he can finish up for himself. Normally I don't mind this type of behavior, I understand that homeless people have it hard enough as it is, so if my small cigarette can bring this man pleasure, why not let him have it? This only becomes aggravating because when a customer pulls in while I'm mid-smoke, I put it out and set it on the brick wall of the building. The homeless man began to notice this, and would steal my half-smoked cigarette [instead of those that our customers put in the ashtray on the porch]. I let this go on for several months, but for some reason I got pissed one day a few months ago that I was not only supporting my own [disgusting] habit but this man was essentially taking something I purchased without my permission [especially now that cigarettes have gone up in price to almost $6 a pack]. I decided to confront him, and told him that the cigarettes in the ashtray were his for the taking, but the ones on the brick wall were being saved for later consumption. Apparently, this message didn't hit home, and he kept on taking my smokes like I was handing them out like lollipops at the doctor's office. Yesterday, he did this twice, and since it was slow enough, I decided to take action in the form of a passive aggressive note. I even rolled it up and taped it to a bait cigarette placed strategically in my usual hiding spot:

Hey, Crackhead!

What the fuck, man? I told you not to take cigarettes that aren't in the ashtray, but you do it anyways (sometimes, I think, just to piss me off). I know times must be tough for you right now (as I can tell by your ever-shittier appearance), but can't you appreciate that you're not the only victim of the recent economic down-turn? I myself am a full-time college student who has to work full time to do so. I don't have money to have to buy a new pack of cigarettes each day just because I'm giving half my pack to you. When people ask you to do something like, "Hey, don't take my smokes, I'm not done with them," or, "Can you spare some change? I need to buy cigs," it's considered rude when you do the opposite. JUST ASK. If I have an extra one, I'll be happy to share it with you, but this taking-what-I-want-cuz-I-don't-care-what-no one-thinks bullshit has got to stop. Thank You <3

I know it was really petty of me, and he probably didn't even read it, but now I can rest soundly knowing that I said my piece. As a side note, when I got to work today, the bait cigarette [and the note] were gone. I wonder if he read it?
