Background:
Let me just start off by saying I understand that smoking is a terrible disgusting habit, and I could probably avoid situations like the one I'm about to mention [and have a better life in the long run] if I just quit smoking, but since that's not the current situation, here goes: There is a homeless man who comes on our stoop each day in the hopes of finding a half-smoked cigarette that he can finish up for himself. Normally I don't mind this type of behavior, I understand that homeless people have it hard enough as it is, so if my small cigarette can bring this man pleasure, why not let him have it? This only becomes aggravating because when a customer pulls in while I'm mid-smoke, I put it out and set it on the brick wall of the building. The homeless man began to notice this, and would steal my half-smoked cigarette [instead of those that our customers put in the ashtray on the porch]. I let this go on for several months, but for some reason I got pissed one day a few months ago that I was not only supporting my own [disgusting] habit but this man was essentially taking something I purchased without my permission [especially now that cigarettes have gone up in price to almost $6 a pack]. I decided to confront him, and told him that the cigarettes in the ashtray were his for the taking, but the ones on the brick wall were being saved for later consumption. Apparently, this message didn't hit home, and he kept on taking my smokes like I was handing them out like lollipops at the doctor's office. Yesterday, he did this twice, and since it was slow enough, I decided to take action in the form of a passive aggressive note. I even rolled it up and taped it to a bait cigarette placed strategically in my usual hiding spot:
Hey, Crackhead!
What the fuck, man? I told you not to take cigarettes that aren't in the ashtray, but you do it anyways (sometimes, I think, just to piss me off). I know times must be tough for you right now (as I can tell by your ever-shittier appearance), but can't you appreciate that you're not the only victim of the recent economic down-turn? I myself am a full-time college student who has to work full time to do so. I don't have money to have to buy a new pack of cigarettes each day just because I'm giving half my pack to you. When people ask you to do something like, "Hey, don't take my smokes, I'm not done with them," or, "Can you spare some change? I need to buy cigs," it's considered rude when you do the opposite. JUST ASK. If I have an extra one, I'll be happy to share it with you, but this taking-what-I-want-cuz-I-don't-care-what-no one-thinks bullshit has got to stop. Thank You <3

I know it was really petty of me, and he probably didn't even read it, but now I can rest soundly knowing that I said my piece. As a side note, when I got to work today, the bait cigarette [and the note] were gone. I wonder if he read it?

This 57 unit apartment building is being build to the Passive House standards. For heating and cooling it is extremely efficient. Here is a link to a short PDF file about the project:

My Eco-Design class took a tour of the building today. This concept is being used in Europe, especially Germany, a lot, and will become more noticeable in the USA in the next few years. This building will be ready for occupancy in about 3 months.
This building is 3 stories. The "fourth Story" seen straight ahead is the top floor of another apartment building being built across the street.

"Passive Armament" is a specialty term in German law governing public assemblies ("Versammlungsrecht"). When a protest march is planned, papers have to be filed with the authorities to ensure that for example the planned route will be closed off for vehicular traffic and police deployment can be scheduled.
Nowadays, certain conditions are customary imposed. Anything that would decrease the effectiveness of police measures (e.g. physical force) is considered to be a passive armament and protesters are prohibited to bring these items to a march.
The list of items covered by this legal term is long and has been steadily growing. It includes the obvious like gas masks, body armour and motorcycle helmets to more commonplace items such as boots with steel caps. Even sunglasses are deemed troublesome, as they might impede visual identification.
Saw several horse patrols throughout the City. This was the first time I had ever seen horses fitted with protective face shields.

The Republican National Convention 2012 was held in Tampa, Florida from August 27-29.
The convention had a rocky start in that Hurricane Issac, only a tropical storm while near Florida, caused the event organizers to play it cautious.
On Monday, August 27, the convention was formally called to order and then immediately put into recess until the next day. The hopes were the tropical storm would pass. It did.
The anticipated protestors never did develop. There were a few, but they were far out number by the photogs. They were extremely passive.
Law enforcement, 4000 strong, outnumbered everyone else.
I went to the RNC, on Tuesday, anticipating to photograph some protestors and hopefully their interaction with the police. My plan quickly fizzled . Instead I turned my camera to the cops.
To say the least, this was an impressive event.

Passive house is a green building design and construction approach that results in highly efficient residential and commercial buildings.
Although commonly referred to under the term “passive house”, buildings constructed to this standard can be built to commercial scale as well as single family residential.
The passive house standard is somewhat complex because there are two separate organizations that promote this type of construction…
PassivHaus in Germany was the originator of the standard… and PHIUS (Passive House Institute U.S.) in the United States was subsequently formed to promote the standard here in the United States.
PHIUS has made changes to the PassivHaus standard to better reflect the differences in climate across the U.S.
Passive house is becoming more popular in the United States. Eco-friendly and energy conservation-minded people are interested in home building options, such as net zero homes1 and passive house construction, to increase their resilience and reduce grid dependency.
