A Curtiss P-40 painted in the colors of the American Volunteer Group (AVG) Flying Tigers. This aircraft performed at the 2017 Tyndall AFB airshow and is owned by the Commemorative Air Force (CAF). Here is more information from the CAF's website: P-40 Flying Tiger Tex Hill - Commemorative Air Force

Although it originally held the USAAF serial number of 42-105867, the CAF's P-40 was operated in Canada during the war years as RCAF 867. In 1947 it was barged to Boeing Field in Seattle, Washington for disposal. It was purchased by Jim P. Swann who registered the airplane as N1226N - the airplane endured a succession of owners throughout the 1950's - one of whom even modified the airplane for "Weather Work." However, the aircraft suffered a landing accident in 1958, at Paris Texas. This set in motion a chain of events which would lead to the CAF adding the aircraft to its collection. Operated by the CAF as #48, this P-40N bears the iconic markings of the Flying Tigers, and personal art work of David Lee "Tex" Hill. Hill was a legendary ace who learned to fly originally with the US Navy, however, after earning his wings, he was recruited along with other members of the USMC, USN and USAAF to join the American Volunteer Group - later known as the Flying Tigers. This P-40 was added to the CAF Collection in 1965.

The Museum's Aircraft

The final production version was the P-38L, which could carry two 300-gallon drop tanks. Deliveries of the L began in June 1944 and continued until August 1945. Of the 10,038 P-38s built, 3,923 were P-38Ls.

The P-38L on display, painted as a P-38J with the 55th Fighter Squadron based in England, was donated to the museum in 1961 by the Kaufmann Foundation, Philadelphia, Penn. The top hats on the left side of the aircraft represent the nine bomber escort missions flown by its pilot, 2nd Lt. Royal D. Frey, with the yellow hat signifying five and the white hats one each.
